Both Xbox Series X|S consoles are officially listed for Grand Theft Auto VI, which Rockstar currently says is coming November 19, 2026. Choose Series X if you value Xbox’s true-4K positioning, a disc drive for other games or UHD Blu-ray, or a higher-capacity model. Choose Series S if you want a disc-free console designed for 1440p output and prefer the lower-tier system. Those are hardware-based buying distinctions—not a verdict on how well GTA 6 will run on either console.

Rockstar’s physical GTA 6 edition is a download code in a box, not a game disc. So the Series X drive is not required to play that edition; it matters if you want to use other disc-based games or movies.

Can Xbox Series S play GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms and gives November 19, 2026 as the game’s current coming date. That listing covers both Series X and Series S; it does not specify the game’s resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, or comparative performance on either console.

Rockstar’s support page, Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions, describes Standard and Ultimate editions for Xbox Series X|S. Its stated digital pre-load date is November 12, 2026, one week before the listed release date. Edition details and dates can change, so check Rockstar’s current page when ordering.

Which console makes more sense for your priorities?

Choose Series X for Xbox’s 4K positioning or disc use

Series X is the fit if you want the console Xbox describes as true 4K, or if you use physical games and UHD Blu-ray movies. But the disc drive does not give you a GTA 6 game disc: Rockstar says its physical GTA 6 package contains a download code and no disc. The drive’s value for this purchase therefore depends on what else you will play or watch.

Choose Series S for a disc-free, 1440p-focused setup

Series S is Xbox’s disc-free option, designed for 1440p output with 4K upscaling capability. It is the more sensible fit if you buy digitally and do not need an optical drive. Check the specific model’s capacity and local price before deciding; Xbox notes that prices and availability vary.

Compare exact storage models, not just the console names

The comparison page’s 1TB Series X disc-drive and 512GB Series S entries are examples, not the only capacities Xbox lists for those product families. Xbox also describes an optional Series X|S storage expansion card, which adds storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. GTA 6’s Xbox install size is not established in the cited official material, so there is no basis here to say which capacity you need for the game.

Is GTA 6 better on Series X or Series S?

That comparison is not established by the official information cited here. Rockstar confirms platform support, while Xbox publishes console-level specifications; neither source gives GTA 6-specific Xbox resolution, frame-rate, graphics-setting, or head-to-head performance results. The GPU figures in the table describe hardware and should not be treated as a prediction of the game’s frame rate or image quality.
