Press Win+X—or right-click the Windows 11 Start button—to open a compact command menu built for system tasks. It is often called the Quick Link or Power User menu. Unlike the normal Start menu, which launches apps and shows recommendations, this menu puts tools such as Terminal, Task Manager, Disk Management, Event Viewer and System within two clicks.
What appears when you right-click Start?
Right-clicking the Start button opens the Win+X menu in the lower-left corner of the desktop. The same menu appears instantly when you press Windows key + X. It is a separate command surface associated with Start, not another page inside the ordinary Start menu.
The normal Start menu has three documented sections—Pinned, All and Recommended—according to Microsoft Learn’s Customize the Windows 11 Start menu documentation, updated May 9, 2025. Those sections are designed for finding and launching applications, files and recent recommendations. Win+X is designed for administration, troubleshooting and device information.

How to open the hidden menu
- Sign in to Windows 11 and display the desktop or any open application.
- Use either method: press Win+X, or right-click the Start button.
- Choose a command with the mouse, or press the underlined letter shown for a menu item when keyboard access is available.
- If a command requires administrator approval, accept the User Account Control prompt only when you intended to open that tool.
The menu opens from the lower-left corner even if the taskbar is centered. You do not need to open Start first.

The most useful commands
Terminal
Terminal opens Windows Terminal, where you can run PowerShell, Command Prompt or another installed shell. The menu can provide a normal or administrator launch, depending on the entry shown on your Windows build. An elevated terminal runs with higher privileges, so commands can change system settings, files and services; use it only for instructions you trust.
Task Manager
Choose Task Manager to inspect running processes, CPU, memory, disk and network use, end an unresponsive application, or review startup apps. This is usually faster than pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc and is useful when a window is frozen but the desktop still responds.

Disk Management
Disk Management opens the partition and drive utility. It shows disks, volumes, drive letters and unallocated space, and can create, format, extend or shrink volumes. Partition changes can destroy data; confirm the disk and volume before applying an operation and keep a current backup.

System and Computer Management
System takes you to device and Windows information, including the installed edition and related specifications. Computer Management groups several administrative consoles, including Event Viewer, shared folders, Local Users and Groups on supported editions, and storage tools. Device Manager, when listed directly or reached through Computer Management, is useful for checking driver status and hardware errors.
When Win+X is faster
- A program is frozen: open Task Manager and end the unresponsive process.
- You need a command-line repair: open Terminal, choosing an administrator option only when required.
- A drive is missing or unallocated: open Disk Management to verify whether Windows detects the hardware and volume.
- A device has a driver problem: reach Device Manager and inspect its status or error code.
- Windows is behaving unpredictably: open Event Viewer and review system or application events around the incident time.
- You need to verify the machine: open System for Windows edition and device details.
What you can and cannot customize
Microsoft documents controls for the ordinary Start menu, including pinned layout and policy-based configuration. On managed or OEM devices, administrators can use documented JSON and policy mechanisms to control pins and layout. Microsoft’s current Start policy settings documentation also says administrators can remove or disable the All apps list and the “Show app list in Start menu” setting.

Those controls affect the ordinary launcher. They do not turn Win+X into a second app grid. The Quick Link menu is best treated as a system-command list; its entries can differ slightly by Windows release, installed components, edition and organizational policy. If an item is absent, search for the tool by name in Start or open it through Windows Settings or Computer Management.
Keyboard habit worth keeping
For frequent troubleshooting, memorize Win+X. It works when the Start menu is slow, when you are already inside another application, and when you need an administrative console without navigating through several Settings pages. Right-clicking Start provides the same result for mouse users.
