Steam Link lets you play a PC game on an Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone, or iPad by streaming the game from a computer running Steam. The computer does the actual game processing; your phone receives the video and audio, while your touch gestures or controller inputs travel back to the computer. To begin, install Steam Link from your device’s app store, connect it to the computer that is running Steam, and start the game through that connection.
You do not have to own a controller, but touchscreen controls are not equally suitable for every game. A compatible external controller can make games designed around physical buttons much easier to play. Steam does not promise that every PC game will feel comfortable on a phone, so game choice and control method matter as much as the connection itself.
What Steam Link actually does
Steam Link is the mobile client in a streaming arrangement. Your computer is the host: it runs Steam, launches the game, performs the game’s processing, and creates the frames and sound. Steam Link receives that video and audio on the phone in real time. Input from the phone’s touchscreen or an attached controller is sent back to the computer.
That distinction answers a common question: Steam Link does not install the PC game on your phone or make the phone run the game locally. The phone acts as a display and input device for the computer. If the host computer cannot launch the game, Steam Link cannot make it playable.

Steam describes the underlying streaming system as real-time encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. This explains why the quality of the network between the phone and host affects how responsive the session feels. Steam’s public information does not state a universal minimum bandwidth figure or promise a particular latency, so there is no official number that can guarantee a smooth result for every home or game.
Steam’s official instruction for the core process is: “Use Steam Link to connect your device to a computer that’s running Steam.”
What you need before starting
Prepare the two ends of the connection before opening the mobile app. The following checklist separates requirements from optional improvements.
- A host computer: It must be running Steam and able to launch the PC game you want to play.
- A supported mobile device: Steam lists Android phones and tablets and Apple mobile devices among the supported device families.
- The Steam Link app: Install it from the app store used by your phone or tablet.
- A network connection: Streaming carries live video and audio to the phone and returns your controls to the computer. The official material does not define one minimum speed for all situations.
- An input method: You can start with the phone’s touch controls. An external controller is optional, not a stated requirement.
Make sure the game is installed and that Steam on the computer can open it before troubleshooting the phone. Steam Link is a remote play client, not a substitute for the game, the host computer, or a working Steam installation.
Supported phones and operating-system requirements
Steam’s Remote Play information lists Android 5.0 or later and Apple platform 11.0 or later for the mobile device families it supports. Store listings can change, and individual devices may have additional requirements, so check the current Steam Link listing for your exact phone or tablet before installing.
Do not confuse these figures with the requirements for the separate Steam Mobile app. Steam’s Steam Mobile page lists iOS 15.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later for that app. Those numbers are not Steam Link’s published minimums.

The table gives platform-level information, not a guarantee for every model. A phone that meets an operating-system version may still provide a different experience from another phone because of its screen, controls, network hardware, or store availability.

How to set up Steam Link on your phone
1. Prepare the computer running Steam
- Turn on the computer you intend to use as the host.
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that owns or can launch the game.
- Confirm that the target game appears in Steam and can be launched on the computer itself.
Testing the game on the host first isolates problems. If it will not start there, resolve that issue on the computer before trying to stream it.
2. Install Steam Link on the mobile device
- Open the app store on your Android or Apple device.
- Search for Steam Link and install the official app.
- Open Steam Link after installation and grant any device permissions the app requires to operate.
The exact store screen and permission wording can vary by operating-system version. Use the current listing for your device rather than assuming that the requirements of Steam Mobile apply to Steam Link.
3. Connect Steam Link to the host computer
- With Steam still running on the computer, open Steam Link on the phone.
- Use the app’s connection flow to find and select the computer running Steam.
- Complete the pairing or confirmation prompts shown by Steam Link.
Steam’s documented flow is to install Steam Link and connect the device to a computer running Steam. The app’s current prompts are the authority for the exact pairing screen you see; labels and discovery behavior can change between releases.
4. Start the game through the connected Steam session
- After the connection is established, browse the available Steam session in Steam Link.
- Select the game you verified on the host computer.
- Start it from the connected session and wait for its video and audio to appear on the phone.
The computer remains responsible for launching and running the game. Closing Steam on the host, shutting down the computer, or losing access to the host prevents the mobile session from continuing.
5. Choose touch controls or a controller
Use the on-screen controls if they feel workable for the game. If aiming, camera movement, keyboard shortcuts, or repeated button combinations are awkward, connect a compatible external controller supported by your phone and Steam Link, then select it as the input device in the app’s current controls flow.
Steam describes controller use and says many games have control schemes optimized for popular titles. That does not establish that one controller works with every phone, nor that every game has a suitable touch layout. Compatibility is a combination of the phone, controller, app, and game.
Touchscreen controls versus a physical controller
Touch input is the fastest way to try a game because it requires no extra hardware. It can be adequate for games with simple menus, limited simultaneous inputs, or controls that tolerate imprecise movement. It also keeps the setup portable.

A physical controller provides real buttons, sticks, and triggers. It is often more comfortable for games designed around a traditional gamepad, especially when the phone’s on-screen controls cover part of the display or require looking down. It remains an accessory, however: Steam Link does not state that a controller is mandatory.

Try the game’s controls for a short session before buying accessories. If the game is technically streaming correctly but movement or button placement is uncomfortable, changing the input method is more relevant than changing the game’s graphics settings.
How game compatibility really works
Steam Link can stream a game that the host computer can run, but “can stream” does not mean “will feel like a native mobile game.” There are two separate questions:
- Can the host launch it? The computer must be able to start and run the PC version through Steam.
- Can you control it comfortably on the phone? The game’s input design must translate acceptably to touch controls or to the controller you attach.
A title that depends on a full keyboard, rapid cursor movement, or many simultaneous commands may be frustrating with a phone overlay even if the stream itself is clear. A game designed for a gamepad may be a better match for a controller. Steam’s material supports using controllers and notes that some games have optimized control schemes, but it does not certify every game or publish a universal control-quality rating.
Evaluate each game independently. Start with the control method you already have, identify the actions that feel difficult, and then decide whether a controller or a different game is the better solution.

Network expectations and playing away from the computer
Steam Link continuously transfers the host’s encoded video and audio to the phone and sends your input back. A network that introduces interruptions or delay can therefore make the image, sound, or controls feel less responsive. Steam describes the protocol as low latency, but the official material used here gives no numeric latency target, minimum bandwidth, or guaranteed performance level.
Steam promotes Remote Play for streaming from a PC to other devices and describes playing away from the computer. That does not, by itself, establish a specific away-from-home setup, router configuration, mobile-data requirement, or performance guarantee. Whether a session works outside your usual location depends on the networks and configuration available to both the phone and host.

If you plan to play away from home, treat it as a connection test rather than an assured feature for every network. Confirm that the host computer is available, Steam is running, and the phone can complete the app’s connection process before relying on the arrangement for a particular trip.

Steam Link cannot find the computer
- Confirm that the computer is powered on and Steam is open.
- Check that you are selecting the intended host if more than one Steam computer is available.
- Close and reopen Steam Link, then repeat its connection flow.
- Verify that the host can launch the game locally before testing the phone again.
The official material does not provide a detailed device-by-device discovery checklist, so the app’s current prompts and your network’s configuration determine the next step when the host remains undiscovered.

The game will not start
- Launch the game directly in Steam on the host computer.
- Resolve any installation or account problem shown by Steam on the computer.
- Return to the connected Steam Link session and start the title again.
Steam Link cannot repair a game that the host itself cannot launch.
The picture or sound is not usable
- Confirm that the session is still connected to the host.
- Check whether the problem is limited to one game or affects the entire Steam Link session.
- Try ending and restarting the stream after confirming that Steam remains open on the computer.
Because Steam does not publish a single bandwidth or latency threshold, avoid treating an unverified number as a guaranteed fix. The relevant question is whether the current network can carry the real-time stream consistently enough for your game.
Touch controls feel wrong
- Try a game with a simpler or more forgiving control scheme.
- Use a compatible external controller if the game expects physical buttons or sticks.
- Check the game’s own control options in the host session if a particular action is missing or difficult.
This is often a control-suitability problem rather than a failure of video streaming. Steam does not promise that every PC game’s controls will feel suitable on a phone.
The controller does not work
- Confirm that the phone recognizes the controller before opening or reconnecting Steam Link.
- Check the controller’s connection and any pairing status shown by the phone.
- Reconnect the controller and test it in the Steam Link session.
No model-by-model controller compatibility list is established in the cited Steam material, so verify support for your exact phone, controller, and app combination rather than assuming universal compatibility.

“Steam Link downloads my PC games to the phone.”
It does not. The host computer runs the game and streams its video and audio to the phone.
“A controller is required.”

“Every Steam game will play like a mobile game.”

A successful first session has a straightforward shape: Steam is open on the computer, Steam Link connects from the phone, the game starts through the connected session, and the phone shows the host’s live video and audio while returning your input. Start with a game whose controls you already understand. This makes it easier to distinguish a connection issue from an input issue.
