For most people, Windows 11 Home is enough. Choose Windows 11 Pro when you need business management, domain or Microsoft Entra joining, BitLocker management, Windows Sandbox, or similar advanced features. Enterprise is for organizations with volume or subscription licensing and centralized IT administration. Education is for qualifying academic institutions. Windows 11 SE is a restricted, school-managed edition for compatible K–8 devices—not a general-purpose alternative—and its support ends in October 2026.
The editions generally provide the same familiar Windows desktop. The important differences are the features available, how the device is managed, who is eligible to license it, and how long each release is serviced.
Windows 11 editions at a glance
| Edition | Designed for | Typical availability | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home | Consumers and families | Normal retail PCs and licenses | You need ordinary Windows for browsing, work, school, media, or gaming. |
| Pro | Professionals, enthusiasts, and small businesses | Retail, OEM, and business licensing | You need advanced management, encryption controls, virtualization, or business-network features. |
| Enterprise | Large organizations | Volume licensing or eligible subscriptions | Your organization needs centralized security, deployment, policy, identity, and servicing controls. |
| Education | Schools, colleges, universities, and qualifying academic institutions | Academic licensing | The institution owns or manages the device under an eligible education license. |
| SE | School-managed K–8 student devices | Specialized education hardware | You are using a compatible device supplied and controlled by a school or administrator. |
Home is not inherently slower than Pro, and Pro does not automatically improve gaming performance. In most cases, the edition is a licensing and capability decision rather than a raw-performance decision.

Windows 11 Home is the mainstream consumer edition. It includes the standard Windows 11 desktop, Microsoft Store access, Windows Update, Windows Security, ordinary consumer productivity features, and the usual supported Windows 11 experience.

Home is normally suitable for:
- Web browsing, email, streaming, and social media
- Microsoft 365 and other office work
- Gaming and general entertainment
- Personal finance, home administration, and everyday tasks
- Schoolwork and household computers
The hardware requirements—not the Home label—usually determine whether a PC feels fast. A computer with the same processor, memory, storage, and graphics hardware can often run either Home or Pro with no meaningful difference in everyday speed.
Home limitations that can matter
The main reason to avoid Home is that it lacks particular Pro and higher-edition capabilities. For example, Microsoft does not support Windows Sandbox on Windows 11 Home. Home also does not provide the full set of business management and enterprise security controls available in higher editions.
Windows 11 Home can be supplied in S mode. S mode restricts software installation to apps from the Microsoft Store and is intended to provide a more controlled experience. To install applications from outside the Store, you must leave S mode. Leaving S mode is permanent, so check that your required software is available before switching.

Home may also use consumer-oriented device encryption behavior where supported, but that should not be confused with the advanced BitLocker management and organizational policy controls associated with Pro and higher editions.
Windows 11 Pro: when the upgrade is worth paying for
Windows 11 Pro is the practical step up from Home for professionals, enthusiasts, and small or medium-sized businesses. It adds capabilities for business identity, management, security, deployment, and virtualization.
Common reasons to choose Pro include:
- Domain or Microsoft Entra joining: Connect the PC to a traditional Windows domain or an organization’s Microsoft Entra environment.
- BitLocker: Use the Pro edition’s supported encryption and management capabilities, subject to hardware and organizational configuration.
- Windows Sandbox: Run an isolated temporary Windows environment for testing software or opening potentially risky files. Sandbox requires a supported edition and hardware configuration.
- Policy and administration: Use business-oriented policy and device-management workflows, including Group Policy-related controls.
- Assigned Access and controlled-use scenarios: Configure a device for a restricted application or dedicated business purpose.
- Enterprise subscription activation: An appropriately licensed Pro device can be stepped up to Enterprise through an eligible organization subscription without deploying a separate Windows image.
Pro is especially useful when a company needs to manage computers centrally, when a technically advanced user needs Sandbox, or when a PC must participate in an organization’s identity and security infrastructure.
What Pro does not do
Windows 11 Pro does not automatically make applications run faster, increase gaming frame rates, improve Wi-Fi, or provide better graphics quality. If you are buying a gaming PC for personal use and do not need a Pro-only function, paying extra for Pro may provide little practical benefit.

Before buying, verify whether the exact laptop includes Pro or Home. A useful place to start is comparing current Windows 11 Pro laptops, particularly business models that ship with Pro already installed. Check the precise model, processor, RAM, storage, price, stock status, and operating-system configuration rather than assuming that every laptop in a product family includes the same edition.
Windows 11 Enterprise: for centrally managed organizations
Windows 11 Enterprise is designed for larger organizations that need extensive centralized control over identity, security, applications, deployment, policies, and feature updates. It is generally obtained through commercial volume licensing or an eligible subscription rather than purchased like a normal consumer retail edition.
Enterprise can be appropriate when an organization needs features such as:
- Organization-wide security and endpoint-management controls
- More extensive identity and device-management integration
- Application control features such as AppLocker, where licensed and configured
- Advanced enterprise security capabilities
- Controlled feature delivery and deployment at scale
- Organization-wide licensing and activation workflows
- Specialized networking features, such as supported Always On VPN device-tunnel scenarios
Microsoft’s security feature documentation distinguishes some of these controls by edition and subscription entitlement. The exact feature can depend on the Windows release, license, hardware, and management configuration; “Enterprise” is not a guarantee that every feature is enabled automatically.

Enterprise is often a step-up from Windows Pro. An organization may license a PC with Pro and then activate Enterprise through an eligible Windows or Microsoft 365 subscription. This can change the edition without manually reinstalling a separate Windows image, but the technical path does not give an individual the right to use Enterprise without the required underlying license.
Enterprise should therefore be selected by an organization’s IT or procurement team. A consumer generally should not buy Enterprise merely because it has a longer support period or a longer list of features.
Windows 11 Education: Enterprise-like capabilities for academic institutions
Windows 11 Education is intended for qualifying schools, colleges, universities, and other academic institutions. Functionally, it is broadly analogous to Enterprise, while Windows Pro Education is the academic counterpart to Pro.
Education deployments may use:
- School identity and security controls
- Intune and other endpoint-management workflows
- Classroom and device-management capabilities
- Multi-app kiosk and shared-device scenarios
- Centralized deployment and policy enforcement
- Enterprise-oriented security and application controls
An institution with an eligible subscription may be able to step up a Pro Education device to Windows Education, in a way comparable to the Pro-to-Enterprise activation path. The institution’s agreement determines eligibility, permitted users, shared-device rights, lab and library use, and other licensing details.

Is Education a cheaper version for students?
Not as a general retail rule. Windows 11 Education is not simply a discounted consumer edition that any student can select without qualification. It is tied to academic licensing and institutional eligibility. A student buying a personal laptop should normally compare Home and Pro unless their school explicitly supplies or licenses Education.
Windows 11 SE: a locked-down school edition
Windows 11 SE is a cloud-first, simplified edition designed for school-managed devices used primarily by students in grades K–8. It was designed around educator feedback for a distraction-reduced environment and is normally preinstalled on compatible education hardware.
Windows 11 SE differs from Home and Pro in how much control the user has:
- Only IT administrators can install applications.
- Users cannot access the Microsoft Store.
- Users cannot freely download and install arbitrary applications from the internet.
- OneDrive cloud storage and a simplified interface are central to the intended workflow.
- The device is expected to be configured and managed by a school or administrator.
SE is therefore not a cheaper general-purpose Windows edition. It is closer to a controlled school-device platform. It may be suitable for a child using a school-issued laptop, but it is a poor choice for a personal computer on which the owner expects to install arbitrary desktop software, games, utilities, or development tools.

Microsoft has stated that support for Windows 11 SE—including software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes—ends in October 2026. Microsoft also says Windows 11 SE will not receive a feature update after version 24H2. A device may continue to operate after support ends, but buyers should confirm the school or manufacturer’s replacement or transition plan.
Because that support endpoint is close, do not choose a new SE device in 2026 without verifying its lifecycle. For new school purchases, an institution should evaluate hardware that supports another Windows 11 edition or follow Microsoft’s current education-device guidance.

Windows 11 servicing: why the edition affects support length
Windows 11 feature releases do not all have one universal end-of-support date. Microsoft’s release information lists separate support periods by release and edition. As of August 12, 2026, Microsoft’s Windows release information lists Windows 11 versions 26H1 for supported new devices, 25H2, and 24H2.
Under the stated lifecycle policy:
- Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations: 24 months of support for each feature release.
- Enterprise and Education: 36 months of support for each feature release.
- SE: Follow its special edition lifecycle; Microsoft has announced the end of updates and support in October 2026.
The exact end-of-updates date depends on both the Windows version and edition. When planning a purchase or deployment, check the support date for the specific release installed on the device rather than relying on a single “Windows 11 end-of-support” date.
Which Windows 11 edition should you choose?
- Choose Home for ordinary personal use. It is the right default for browsing, office work, gaming, media, household use, and most schoolwork.
- Choose Pro if you need a specific Pro feature. The clearest reasons are domain or Entra joining, advanced management, BitLocker management, Windows Sandbox, business policies, or a small-business deployment requirement.
- Choose Enterprise when your organization supplies the license. It is intended for centralized enterprise administration, not for a typical individual buyer.
- Choose Education or Pro Education when an eligible institution licenses the device. Confirm the school’s licensing and management arrangements before purchasing or changing editions.
- Do not choose SE for a general-purpose personal PC. Use it only for an appropriate managed school device, and account for its October 2026 support endpoint.
Upgrading from Home to Pro—or Pro to a higher edition
Windows edition changes are governed by licensing as well as by the technical activation process.
Home to Pro
A Home device can generally be upgraded to Pro by purchasing and applying a valid Pro license through the supported Windows activation process. The upgrade changes the edition and unlocks Pro capabilities; it does not upgrade the computer’s processor, memory, storage, or graphics hardware.
Before upgrading, confirm that the feature you need is actually included in Pro. Some advanced controls, including certain application-control and enterprise VPN scenarios, require Enterprise-level licensing or entitlements rather than Pro alone.
Pro to Enterprise
Microsoft documents subscription-activation step-up paths from appropriately licensed Windows Pro devices to Enterprise. The organization must have the qualifying subscription and the correct user and device licensing. A Pro installation is commonly the base rather than something that must be replaced with a separate Enterprise image.
Pro Education to Education
Academic institutions with an eligible Microsoft or Windows subscription may use the corresponding Pro Education-to-Education step-up path. The institution’s licensing terms—not the user’s student status alone—determine whether the activation is permitted.

SE is different
SE is a specialized OEM and education-device edition, not a normal upgrade target for a general-purpose PC. Do not buy an SE laptop expecting to convert it casually into Home or Pro. Check Microsoft’s and the manufacturer’s deployment guidance for the exact hardware before making a purchase.
After installation: solving driver and setup problems
Edition choice is rarely the cause of a missing Wi-Fi adapter, touchpad, audio device, or graphics driver. After installing or resetting Windows, use this order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and review available driver updates.
- Download drivers from the PC manufacturer’s official support page using the exact model or service tag.
- Use Device Manager to identify devices with warning icons and record the hardware or error details.
- Restart and test the affected hardware after each driver change.
A third-party utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater may be a convenient additional way to scan for missing or outdated drivers, and Outbyte states that its Windows 11 product offers scanning, driver backup, and update functions. It is optional—not required for Windows 11 Pro, not a security product, and not a replacement for Windows Update or the computer manufacturer’s support site. Create a restore point or backup first and review proposed drivers before installing them.
Common mistakes when comparing Windows 11 editions
- Assuming Pro is faster: Edition features do not normally increase raw performance.
- Buying Enterprise as a consumer upgrade: Enterprise depends on organizational licensing and administration.
- Calling Education a student discount: Education licensing is for qualifying academic scenarios and may include institution-specific rights.
- Choosing SE because it is inexpensive: Its app restrictions and approaching support end make it unsuitable for many new purchases.
- Assuming every feature works everywhere: Hardware, release, region, subscription, and policy settings can change availability.
- Confusing S mode with Windows SE: S mode is a restriction available with Windows 11 Home; SE is a distinct school-managed edition.
- Expecting an edition upgrade to fix hardware: More expensive Windows licensing cannot compensate for insufficient RAM, slow storage, weak graphics, or unsupported hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows 11 Pro better than Home?
Pro is more capable for business administration and advanced users, but it is not automatically faster or better for gaming. Home is usually the better value if you do not need domain or Entra joining, BitLocker management, Windows Sandbox, or another Pro-specific feature.
Can I use Windows 11 Education as a student?
Only when you or your institution meet the applicable academic licensing requirements. Education is not automatically available as a general student retail discount. Ask the school or institution that provides the license.
Can Windows 11 SE install normal desktop apps?
No. Windows 11 SE is designed to be controlled by school IT administrators. Users cannot access the Microsoft Store or freely install arbitrary applications from the internet.
Which Windows 11 edition has the longest normal support period?
Enterprise and Education feature releases normally receive 36 months of support, compared with 24 months for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations. The exact date depends on the Windows release. Windows 11 SE has a separate lifecycle, with support announced to end in October 2026.
Can I upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro without reinstalling Windows?
A valid Pro license can generally be applied through the supported Windows activation process without a full reinstall. The upgrade unlocks edition features but does not improve the computer’s hardware performance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy Windows 11 Home unless you can name a Pro feature you need. Choose Pro for business networking, management, encryption controls, or Sandbox. Leave Enterprise and Education to organizations with the appropriate licensing, and treat Windows 11 SE as existing managed school hardware—not as a general-purpose PC edition, especially with its announced October 2026 support end.
