Microsoft documents different update windows for different products: up to 24 hours for SharePoint Online and up to 48 hours for classic Outlook. If Teams alone is stale, clearing its cache may help. If the edit control is unavailable, your organization may manage or restrict profile-photo changes.
Why won’t my Microsoft 365 profile picture update?
A Microsoft 365 profile photo can appear in several connected apps, and an update may not show in each one at the same time. First check whether the change was saved at the account level, then identify which app still shows the old photo. A stale image in one app can call for a different step than a missing edit option or a photo that remains old across services.
How to update your work or school account photo
- Go to myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with the work or school account whose picture you want to change.
- Select the edit icon on the current profile photo.
- Upload or choose the replacement photo, then select Save.
Microsoft documents this as the account-level route for a work or school photo. Save the change before troubleshooting the apps that display it.
What to do when the picture stays old
The edit or Change option is missing
Your organization may restrict profile-photo editing or manage account information centrally. Microsoft notes that the Change option can be unavailable when information is controlled by IT or HR systems. Ask your IT administrator or HR team whether you can change the photo yourself; repeatedly trying the same control will not override an organizational restriction. Microsoft’s work or school account guidance and its classic Outlook instructions describe this limitation.

SharePoint Online still shows the previous photo
Allow up to 24 hours for an updated picture to become visible in SharePoint Online, according to Microsoft’s SharePoint profile-photo documentation. This is SharePoint’s guidance, not a universal deadline for every Microsoft 365 app.
Classic Outlook still shows the previous photo
Microsoft says a new photo can take up to 48 hours to appear in classic Outlook. That timing applies to the classic Outlook guidance; it should not be substituted for another app’s documented behavior. See Microsoft’s Outlook photo instructions.

Outlook on the web has not refreshed
Microsoft’s Outlook on the web guidance says the new photo appears the next time you sign in to Microsoft 365. If you have not signed in again since saving the change, do so and check the photo.
Teams alone shows the old image
Microsoft says it may take time for Teams profile-picture settings to update across channels, and that clearing the Teams cache may help it update sooner. Cache clearing is a possible aid, not a guaranteed fix. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for clearing the Teams cache.

What an administrator can check for SharePoint Online
SharePoint Online’s documented photo synchronization uses a photo stored in Microsoft Entra. When a SharePoint page requests a profile photo, SharePoint evaluates it against profile information. For a new user, or when the photo timestamp is more than 24 hours old, SharePoint may request a sync. If the Entra photo is missing or already matches SharePoint, no action is taken; if it differs, SharePoint syncs the photo to its repository. Microsoft also states that guest user profile pictures are not synced to SharePoint Online. These details describe SharePoint Online, not the complete photo-update architecture of every Microsoft 365 app. Microsoft’s documentation gives administrators the service-specific process.

- The My Site Host site collection has available quota.
Microsoft says the prior SharePoint sync attempt must be more than 24 hours old before another sync is attempted. Administrators should not manually edit User Photo properties in the User Profile.

Microsoft identifies several ways a photo can be added to Microsoft Entra: a user changing it through Microsoft 365, an administrator uploading it with the Microsoft Graph PowerShell Set-MgUserPhotoContent cmdlet, an admin-center change, or synchronization of the Active Directory ThumbnailPhoto attribute through Azure AD Connect. Microsoft cautions that the ThumbnailPhoto method produces low-resolution photos, and that the attribute is not synced from Azure AD to SharePoint. These are administrator-side routes; if you are a user whose edit option is disabled, ask your organization’s administrator to handle the change.
