First compare speed with the VPN off and on under similar conditions; that tells you whether to focus on the local connection or the VPN path.
Why a VPN can slow your connection
A VPN encrypts your traffic and sends it through an additional server. That extra processing and longer route can add latency or reduce throughput, but the effect varies with your connection, server, route, device, and VPN settings. There is no single slowdown percentage that applies to every VPN user.
Server distance and congestion are common factors. A faraway server generally means a longer route and can increase latency; a busy server may also perform poorly. Your baseline internet connection remains important: a VPN cannot fix a slow connection between your device and the internet.
Diagnose the slowdown in order
1. Compare speeds with the VPN off and on
- Disconnect the VPN and run a speed test. Note download speed, upload speed, and latency.
- Reconnect to the VPN and repeat the test under similar conditions, using the same device, network, and test service where practical.
- Check whether the problem affects all sites and apps or just one. If only one service is slow, the issue may be specific to that service or its route.
If results are poor both with and without the VPN, investigate your Wi-Fi, router, device, or internet service provider (ISP) first. If the baseline is normal but performance drops with the VPN, focus on the VPN server, route, protocol, and app.

2. Try a nearby server, then another server
Choose a server near your physical location and test again. If it remains slow, try a different server in the same general region. The nearest server is not necessarily the least congested one; if your VPN app displays server load, compare available options and try one showing lower load. Provider guidance from Private Internet Access and Mozilla recommends checking server selection as part of troubleshooting.
3. Compare the protocols your VPN supports
In the VPN app’s connection or protocol settings, test one supported option at a time, then repeat the speed test. If available, compare WireGuard and OpenVPN. Proton VPN and Private Internet Access describe WireGuard as a speed-oriented option, but that does not guarantee it will be fastest on every device or route. If you use OpenVPN, compare UDP and TCP: both providers say UDP generally performs better in their contexts, though results depend on the network.

Use the app’s own protocol labels and instructions; availability and settings differ by provider. Avoid changing several options at once, so you can tell which change affected performance. See Proton VPN’s protocol guidance and Private Internet Access’s protocol instructions.
4. Check Wi-Fi and the underlying connection
If you are on Wi-Fi, test closer to the access point. If your device and router support it, try Ethernet as a comparison. A wired connection can help identify weak Wi-Fi, but it will not resolve a congested VPN server or an inefficient route. Restarting networking equipment or testing another network may also help isolate a local wireless problem; router restart steps vary by equipment. 5. Use setup-specific fixes only when they fit
- Mobile or router connection with possible packet-size limits: Private Internet Access says its “Use Small Packets” setting may help on networks with strict packet-size limits. It is a targeted option, not a general speed setting. Follow the provider’s instructions at its slow-speed support page.
- GL.iNet router client: GL.iNet documents MTU adjustments in its router client options. Its interface-specific values are for its own hardware and configuration, not universal settings for other routers. See GL.iNet’s VPN dashboard documentation.
- Windows using OpenVPN: Private Internet Access describes reinstalling the Windows TAP adapter for slow speeds in that particular setup. Do not apply this fix to another operating system or protocol without provider-specific instructions; see the PIA troubleshooting steps.
Router CPU limits and operating-system details can also affect performance on particular setups. Before changing advanced router settings or network adapters, confirm that the symptom matches the provider’s instructions for your device.
Match the symptom to the next step

If the basic checks do not resolve the issue, provide support with details that make the tests comparable:

- Download, upload, and latency results with the VPN disconnected and connected.
- The VPN server location and protocol used for the connected test.
- Your device, operating-system version, and whether you are on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, mobile data, or a router VPN.
- The sites or apps affected, and whether the issue occurs on other networks.
- Relevant firewall or antivirus details, if applicable.
