Current AI should still be called artificial intelligence, not “Super Intelligence,” unless it can show broad, dependable capabilities that justify the stronger name. That is the argument Craig Grannell makes in a Stuff opinion article published on 10 October 2026: useful AI can also be narrow, intrusive, wasteful and wrong, so a grander label risks promising more than the technology consistently delivers.
Grannell’s objection is not that AI has no value. It is that a name should describe demonstrated capability, not substitute for it. The distinction matters because “Super Intelligence” sounds less like a neutral description and more like a verdict that the technology has already surpassed ordinary limits.
Why did the phrase “Super Intelligence” become controversial?
Grannell’s article was prompted by a reported political push to replace “Artificial Intelligence” with “Super Intelligence.” The article says Donald Trump promoted the new wording as a better description of transformative technology, reports favorable reactions from Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, and says Trump later called people who continued to use “Artificial Intelligence” “THE ENEMY.” These are claims reported in Grannell’s commentary; the article is the source for that account.

The dispute is about more than a preferred phrase. “Artificial intelligence” names a broad field and set of technologies. “Super Intelligence” implies a level of capability. Calling a technology superintelligent can therefore sound like a claim about what it can do, not merely a new label for what it is.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That difference puts the burden of proof at the center of the argument. If the new name is meant as a description, it should match consistent performance. If it is meant as promotion, readers should recognize that it is framing rather than a technical finding.
Is today’s AI really superintelligent?
Grannell’s answer is no—not on the evidence he describes. His criticism is that everyday systems may produce recycled material as fact, struggle with counting, optimize for engagement, or give answers that are irritating, intrusive, wasteful or wrong. Those observations are presented as qualitative criticism, not as the results of a quantified study.
That qualification matters. Grannell does not offer a benchmark, a measured error rate or a systematic comparison showing how often AI succeeds or fails. His article is an opinion piece grounded in practical observations and concerns, rather than a technical evaluation. It supports a skeptical argument about using “super” as a blanket description; it does not establish that every AI system fails in the same ways or that no system performs exceptionally well on a particular task.
The strongest version of the question is not whether a system can do something impressive once. It is whether it can perform across a wide range of tasks, reliably, and adaptably enough for “superintelligence” to be an accurate description. The article argues that this broader standard has not been met by the everyday AI its author encounters.

What is the difference between AI, AGI and ASI?
These terms describe different levels or scopes of capability; they are not interchangeable names for the same thing. In the terminology used to frame the debate, AI is the broad category, AGI refers to general capability at a human level, and ASI describes a hypothetical level vastly beyond human intelligence.
| Term | Meaning in this debate | What the term does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| AI | A broad term for artificial-intelligence systems, including systems directed at particular tasks. | It does not say that a system is generally capable, consistently reliable or superior to people. |
| AGI | Artificial general intelligence: a general capability at a human level. | The label alone does not prove that a particular system has achieved that level. |
| ASI | Artificial superintelligence: a hypothetical level of intelligence vastly beyond human intelligence. | It is not a synonym for current AI, nor evidence that a system has reached that hypothetical level. |
The important distinction is between a system succeeding at a task and demonstrating general capability. A narrow success may be useful and impressive without showing human-level generality, much less intelligence vastly beyond human beings. The terms AGI and ASI name more demanding ideas than the broad term AI.
“Super Intelligence” in the political language reported by Grannell should not automatically be treated as a technical classification equivalent to ASI. The commentary describes a push to rename AI; it does not establish that the new phrase comes with a definition, a threshold or evidence that systems meet one.

Why does the name matter if AI can still be useful?
Names shape expectations. A person hearing “Super Intelligence” may reasonably infer that a system is broadly capable, dependable and superior—not simply that it can help with some tasks. If the label outruns demonstrated performance, it can blur the difference between a real capability and a promise about what the technology might become.

The secondary analysis behind this debate identifies three risks of premature superintelligence language: inflated expectations, distraction from present-day risks and distorted policy discussion. Each follows from the same mismatch. Attention can shift toward a speculative future while people still need to assess the accuracy, safety, resource demands and intellectual-property implications of systems in use now.
Terminology also affects accountability. If a product is described in sweeping terms, users may expect it to be more trustworthy than its actual performance warrants. Calling a system “AI” does not make it reliable; calling it “super” does not make it more so. Readers should separate what a name suggests from what a system has demonstrated.
Does skepticism about the label mean rejecting AI?
No. Grannell explicitly says he is not anti-AI and acknowledges the possibility of medical-research breakthroughs. His position is skepticism toward the name “Super Intelligence” when consistent superiority has not been shown, not a claim that AI cannot help people or produce valuable results.
This is an important distinction because debates about AI often collapse two different questions: whether a technology can be useful, and whether it deserves a sweeping claim about its intelligence. A system may be valuable in a specific setting while remaining limited or unreliable in others. Acknowledging potential benefits does not require accepting an inflated label, just as challenging a label does not require dismissing every benefit.

The same distinction keeps criticism focused. Concerns about resource use, safety, accuracy, intellectual-property rights and basic utility are questions about how systems are developed and used. They do not, by themselves, settle whether AI has scientific or practical value. Grannell’s argument is that those concerns deserve attention alongside promises of transformation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should readers take from Grannell’s argument?
Read the piece as an argument about the gap between branding and demonstrated performance, rather than as a comprehensive report on the state of every AI system. Its core standard is straightforward: a claim of broad superiority should be supported by broad, reliable capability. The article’s practical examples explain why its author considers the stronger label premature, while its acknowledgment of potential benefits rules out the simpler interpretation that he rejects AI altogether.
There is also a limit to what the commentary can establish. It supplies no named statistics or quantified study, so it cannot answer how frequently a particular failure occurs, how systems compare under controlled conditions, or whether performance is improving. Those questions require evidence beyond the qualitative observations described in the article. That limit does not erase the naming argument; it helps readers distinguish an opinion about expectations from a measured technical verdict.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor now, “AI” is the more restrained term when referring to the broad technology. “AGI” and “ASI” carry more specific and ambitious meanings, and the latter remains hypothetical in the framework used here. Grannell’s point is not that stronger language must never be used, but that it should follow evidence rather than stand in for it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is “Super Intelligence” an official technical category for current AI?
The account of the naming push does not provide a formal definition, capability threshold or certification process for the phrase. Treat it as rhetoric unless a speaker specifies what the term means and what evidence supports applying it.
What evidence would make a claim of superintelligence more convincing?
A useful claim would identify the capabilities being measured, the tasks and comparison standard, and whether results hold across more than a narrow demonstration. Independent, repeatable evidence would help distinguish a durable capability from a promotional description.
Can an AI system be excellent at one task without being generally intelligent?
Yes. Strong performance on a specific task does not, on its own, establish flexible, general capability across unrelated tasks. That is why task-level success and claims such as AGI or ASI should be evaluated separately.
