Uneven cooking in an air fryer oven is usually caused by crowded food, blocked airflow, an unsuitable rack position, or heat that is too high for the food. Start by spreading pieces out, checking your oven’s manual for the right rack position, and turning or rotating food halfway through. If the outside browns before the center cooks, lower the temperature and give it more time.
Why an air fryer oven cooks food unevenly
An oven’s air-fry mode uses circulating hot air, so food needs room for air to move around it. A tightly packed tray, stacked pieces, oversized pan, or foil blocking a rack can interrupt circulation. Rack position also matters, but the correct position varies by appliance: manufacturer guidance is not consistent across models.
Uneven results can look different. Some pieces may be pale while others are browned; food may cook more on one side; or the outside may burn before the center is done. The following checks address the most common causes before you suspect an appliance fault.

How to fix uneven cooking

Spread food out and reduce the batch
Arrange food in a single, even layer where possible, leaving gaps between pieces. Avoid stacking. If the tray is still tightly filled, cook a smaller batch. Commercial Chef’s multi-oven manual identifies overcrowding and ingredients placed too close together as causes of incomplete cooking, and advises adjusting the insert position.

Check the rack position in your oven’s manual
Use the rack position specified for your exact model and its air-fry mode; there is no universal rack number. Whirlpool’s general guidance gives position 3 for a five-position cavity and position 4 for a seven-position cavity, while Samsung specifies position 3 for the supported oven models covered by its instructions. Both direct users to their model-specific guidance.

Turn, rotate, or shake food halfway through
At about the midpoint, turn or rotate pieces, or shake them if they are in a suitable basket. This can help food brown more evenly. Frigidaire recommends this approach in its troubleshooting guidance for its air-fryer toaster combo; follow your appliance’s instructions and handle food and accessories safely. Lower the heat if the exterior cooks too fast
If food is burnt outside but raw inside, lower the temperature and extend the cooking time. Frigidaire recommends this adjustment for that symptom. The right change depends on the food and appliance, so do not treat a fixed temperature reduction as universal.

Remove pans or coverings that obstruct airflow
Use cookware that leaves space around it rather than filling the oven cavity. Whirlpool recommends about 2 inches of clearance around baking pans in its range guidance; treat that as guidance for Whirlpool ovens, not a dimension for every appliance. Whirlpool also warns against covering an entire rack or the oven bottom with foil because it can block airflow. Do not line or cover oven surfaces unless your manual permits it. Rack, tray, and drip-pan setup
When cooking on multiple racks or using an accessory, check the manual for permitted rack positions, whether the tray should be perforated or solid, and where any drip pan belongs. The manufacturer instructions differ: Samsung says to place the drip tray below the rack for supported models, and Oster’s French door air-fry oven manual describes using the middle rack and catching drips below greasy food. Do not assume those placements apply to another oven.

Whirlpool’s air-fry instructions describe its W11548747 oven air-fry basket as optional and recommended for best results, not required. Confirm compatibility with your model and dimensions before buying a basket. A perforated mesh tray can allow air to reach food from below, but it will not solve an overcrowded load or incorrect rack placement. When to contact the manufacturer
If food remains uneven after you have checked the load size, spacing, rack position, cooking settings, and cleanliness, consult the model’s manual and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. The guidance cited here does not establish an internal fault from uneven cooking alone; diagnosis depends on the appliance and its symptoms.
