You look different in photos because a mirror and a camera show different versions of your face: the mirror reverses the image, while a camera captures one viewpoint. A close camera can also change apparent facial proportions. Familiarity with your reflection helps explain why an ordinary photo may feel unfamiliar, but neither view is a definitive test of what you look like or how attractive you are.
Why a photo and a mirror show different views
A mirror reverses the image
Your reflection is laterally reversed compared with an ordinary, unflipped photograph. Because you see that reversed view repeatedly, it can feel like the most familiar version of your face. Facial features are not perfectly symmetrical, so reversing them changes their arrangement in ways you may notice in a photo.
Some phones or apps may mirror a preview or save an image differently, but behavior varies. The cited research does not establish the current default behavior for every phone, so check the image itself rather than assuming all selfies are saved in one orientation.
A camera captures a single moment
A mirror shows your movement and changing expression; a photograph freezes one instant. Differences in expression, angle, or lighting between that instant and your usual view can also make an image feel unlike you. The studies discussed here do not quantify how much those conditions contribute across devices.

How camera distance changes facial proportions
When a camera is close, parts of the face nearer the lens can appear larger relative to parts farther away. This is a perspective effect caused by the camera position, not simply a matter of a phone being a phone. Adeeb Derakhshan and colleagues reported that short “selfie” distances distorted midfacial features with both smartphones and full-frame cameras in their 2024 study in The Laryngoscope (study abstract and measurements).
The study photographed 12 subjects. Using measurements at 60 inches as a comparison standard, the researchers reported:

- At 8 inches: midface vertical stretching increased by 12%–19% with a full-frame camera at 24 mm, 35 mm, and 50 mm focal lengths; the study reported statistical significance for all three measurements.
- At 8 inches: the smartphone images showed an 18% increase in the same midface features.
- At 12 inches: the smartphone images showed a 12% increase in those features.
These are results from that study’s setup, not predictions for every face, camera, or selfie. The authors’ conclusion was that “Distortion of midfacial features using both smartphones and full-frame cameras occurs with short, ‘selfie’ distances between the camera and subject.”
Why focal length is not the whole explanation
Focal length affects field of view and framing, but it does not by itself explain perspective. In practice, photographers often move farther away when using a longer focal length to keep a person framed similarly. That change in camera-to-subject distance changes perspective. Lens aberration is a separate optical issue; it should not be confused with the perspective changes caused by viewpoint and distance.

Research on photographic practice finds that focal length and viewing distance both affect how a picture’s perspective is perceived. A viewer’s preferred viewing distance can lead them to view long-focal-length pictures too near and short-focal-length pictures too far. That is one reason there is no single focal length that is universally “the human eye” or guaranteed to show the most accurate-looking face in every context (Banks and colleagues on photographic practice).
A separate study found that facial perspective associated with interpersonal distance can influence social judgments, and that geometric warping alone accounted for the effect in its controlled comparisons. It does not show that any particular portrait distance makes a person look more attractive (study on facial perspective and social judgments).

Why you might prefer one version of your face
In a 2023 study of 198 dental students, participants compared original and mirror-reversed versions of their own standard frontal photos and selfies. Most preferred their original standard frontal photograph, while most preferred the mirror version of their own selfie. For a selfie taken at rest, 56.6% preferred the mirror image (study details and limitations).
This result is consistent with familiarity affecting preference; it does not prove that everyone prefers a reflection or that either orientation is objectively better. The study used static pictures, involved dental students, and its authors called for further investigation.

How to take a less close-looking photo
- Move the camera farther away. This changes the camera-to-face distance, the factor directly connected with distortion in the 2024 study.
- Reframe after moving. Use the camera’s framing controls or crop the result so your face remains the intended size in the picture. A change in framing is not the same thing as changing perspective by moving the camera.
- Compare several images. Try more than one distance and choose based on what you want the picture to show; a single image is just one viewpoint and one captured moment.
- Use a tripod and remote shutter if useful. They can make it easier to place a phone farther away while taking the photo hands-free. This is a practical convenience inferred from the distance finding, not an accessory tested by the researchers.
What a photo can—and cannot—tell you
A photograph is a record of a face from a particular camera position, orientation, moment, and set of capture conditions. The mirror gives you a familiar reversed view; a close selfie may alter facial proportions; and a static image removes the movement you see in a reflection. None of these views alone establishes an objectively correct version of your appearance.
