If you can’t copy and paste on your Chromebook, first test whether the failure is selection, copying, pasting, one app or website, or a school/work policy. Chromebook shortcuts are Ctrl+C to copy, Ctrl+X to cut, and Ctrl+V to paste, but app restrictions and managed-device policies can change where clipboard transfers work.

The fastest diagnosis is to copy a short phrase from one simple editable field to another, then open the clipboard menu with Search or Launcher+V. If the copied phrase appears there, ChromeOS received the copy and the destination is the more likely problem. If no new item appears, investigate text selection, the keyboard, the active app, or device policy.

Key takeaways

  • Google’s Chromebook shortcut reference documents Ctrl+C for copy, Ctrl+X for cut, Ctrl+V for paste, and Ctrl+Shift+V for plain-text paste.
  • Search+V or Launcher+V opens the ChromeOS clipboard menu, which Google currently documents as supporting up to five copied items.
  • A clipboard item appearing in the menu proves that copying succeeded at the ChromeOS level; it does not prove that every website or app will accept the item.
  • School and workplace administrators can restrict copy-and-paste transfers between particular websites, apps, profiles, Incognito mode, Linux, Files, and other destinations.
  • Powerwash cannot fix a website restriction, incompatible Android or Linux app, defective keyboard, or administrator policy, so a factory reset should be a last resort.

Why can’t I copy and paste on my Chromebook? Start with the correct shortcuts

Chromebook copy and paste normally uses the Ctrl key, not the Windows key or macOS Command key. Google’s official Chromebook keyboard shortcut reference lists these shortcuts:

Action Chromebook shortcut
Copy selected content Ctrl+C
Cut selected content Ctrl+X
Paste Ctrl+V
Paste without formatting Ctrl+Shift+V
Open clipboard history Search+V or Launcher+V
Paste a selected clipboard item Open the clipboard menu, select an item with Tab or the arrow keys, then press Enter

The Search key may be labeled Launcher on a different Chromebook model. Google’s shortcut reference currently documents up to five copied items in the clipboard menu, not unlimited clipboard history.

How can I tell whether copying or pasting is failing?

Use this 30-second address-bar test to separate a failed copy from a failed paste. This is a practical troubleshooting test, not a Google requirement.

  1. Press Ctrl+L to focus the browser address bar.
  2. Type clipboard test.
  3. Press Ctrl+A to select the phrase, then press Ctrl+C.
  4. Press Search+V or Launcher+V.
  5. Open another editable field, such as a new address bar, and press Ctrl+V.
Result What it indicates Next step
No new item appears in the clipboard menu The text may not have been selected, the copy shortcut may not have registered, the active app may not have copied the content, or a policy may be involved. Repeat the selection, try the context menu, and test another keyboard or account.
The new item appears but does not paste ChromeOS received the copy; the destination field, app, content type, or policy is likely rejecting the paste. Paste into another plain editable field.
The address-bar test succeeds but one website fails The Chromebook clipboard is probably working. The site may use a custom editor, restrict selection, or reject paste in that field. Test another field on the site and inspect that site’s behavior or permissions.
Chrome works but Android or Linux does not The problem is probably specific to the app environment or its clipboard implementation. Use the Android or Linux troubleshooting sections below.

Is the text actually selected?

The most common reason Ctrl+C appears to do nothing is that no usable content was selected. Pressing the shortcut without a visible selection may copy nothing useful.

Dragging across webpage text can fail when a page is still loading, the pointer is interrupted, or the page uses a custom editor. Google Docs and other web editors can also manage selection themselves. If you click somewhere else before copying, the selection may disappear.

Try this recovery sequence:

  1. Click once inside the text field or editor.
  2. Press Ctrl+A. The result depends on focus: the shortcut may select text in an input field, page content, or the whole document.
  3. Press Ctrl+C immediately.
  4. Move directly to the destination without clicking elsewhere in the source.
  5. Click inside the destination field and press Ctrl+V.

A webpage may intentionally prevent text selection. That behavior does not necessarily mean that ChromeOS copy and paste is broken.

Can the destination receive what you are pasting?

Paste is context-sensitive: a destination must accept keyboard input and the particular content type being pasted.

  • A normal webpage body may not have a text cursor and may reject paste.
  • A read-only field cannot accept typing or pasted text.
  • Password, payment, examination, and other security-sensitive fields may intentionally restrict pasting.
  • A document editor may accept the text while removing its formatting.
  • A terminal may use different paste behavior from a normal text field.
  • The Files app needs a selected file, a valid destination folder, and a file paste operation; copying a file is not the same as copying text.
  • An image, formatted document, or rich-text selection may be rejected by a destination that accepts plain text only.

When formatting is causing the problem, try Ctrl+Shift+V. Plain-text paste removes source formatting, but it cannot make a read-only or security-restricted field accept input.

Does right-click copy and paste work?

The context menu is a useful comparison test because it separates clipboard behavior from physical keyboard shortcuts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select a short piece of text.
  2. Right-click and choose Copy, if the menu provides that option.
  3. Click inside a plain editable destination.
  4. Right-click and choose Paste, if available.

If context-menu copy and paste work while Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V fail, investigate the Ctrl key, an external keyboard, key remapping, accessibility settings, or the active application. If neither method works, investigate selection, destination restrictions, administrator policies, or ChromeOS instability.

Right-click behavior is not universal. Touchscreen devices, Linux apps, ChromeOS Terminal, and custom web editors may show different menus or use a right click for another action.

What if copy and paste fail only on one website?

If copy and paste works in the address bar or another plain field but fails on one website, troubleshoot the website rather than assuming the Chromebook clipboard is broken.

Some sites prevent text selection, use custom editors, make a field read-only, or reject particular content. A site may also request access through the browser’s Web Clipboard API. Chrome Enterprise documentation distinguishes website clipboard permissions from ordinary keyboard shortcuts: a site’s clipboard API permission is not automatically the same thing as whether Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V works.

Google’s Chrome Enterprise clipboard policy documentation describes controls that can allow, block, or limit clipboard access for specified sites. The ClipboardAllowedForUrls policy reference covers site-specific clipboard permissions.

Use this order:

  1. Test the same text in a different website or the address bar.
  2. Try a different editable field on the affected site.
  3. Try plain-text paste with Ctrl+Shift+V.
  4. Open the site in a fresh tab and temporarily isolate a recently installed extension if the problem occurs only in Chrome.
  5. Inspect the affected site’s permissions only if the site genuinely needs browser clipboard access.

Do not grant clipboard access to every website as a general fix. Ordinary keyboard copy and paste can fail because of selection or the destination editor even when the site does not need Web Clipboard API access.

Can a school or work administrator disable copy and paste?

Yes. A managed Chromebook can restrict clipboard transfers for particular source-and-destination combinations without disabling every copy-and-paste operation globally.

Google documents administrator controls involving websites, apps, Files, Linux, removable storage, other Chrome profiles, Incognito mode, and applications outside Chrome. Restrictions can apply when moving information between a managed work or school context and an unmanaged personal context.

Clue Likely explanation
Copy and paste fail only with a school or work account A policy may restrict the account, source, destination, or data type.
A warning or policy message appears The organization has configured a clipboard or data-control rule.
Work-document text cannot be pasted into a personal website A management-boundary rule may block the transfer.
Copying inside the managed workspace works, but Chrome-to-another-app fails The organization may restrict transfers between Chrome and non-Chrome applications.
The same Chromebook behaves differently with a personal account The managed account or session is a strong suspect.

Google’s ChromeOS data-controls documentation describes outcomes such as Allow, Report, Warn, Block, and No policy set. The documented ChromeOS 103-or-later requirement applies to the administrator data-controls feature, not to ordinary Chromebook copy and paste.

Test Guest mode or another account only as a comparison, not as a way to bypass organizational controls. If the failure follows the school or work account, contact the administrator and describe the source, destination, account, and exact warning. Do not try to bypass management with developer mode, unofficial tools, or extensions.

What if copy and paste fail only in Android apps?

Android apps on ChromeOS do not all implement desktop keyboard and clipboard behavior identically. If Chrome works but one Android app fails, treat the issue as app-specific until testing shows otherwise.

  1. Open an ordinary text-input field in the Android app.
  2. Try Ctrl+V after copying a short phrase in Chrome.
  3. Long-press inside the field and look for Android’s Paste menu.
  4. Try copying and pasting entirely within the Android app.
  5. Restart or update the affected app, then test again.

Google’s Android-on-ChromeOS testing guidance specifically tests cut, copy, and paste in text-input boxes with Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C, and Ctrl+V. That testing guidance does not mean every Android app supports those shortcuts equally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one Android app fails while Chrome and other apps work, contact the app developer or use the app’s own edit menu. A Chromebook-wide reset is unlikely to repair one app’s compatibility problem.

What if copy and paste fail only in Linux apps or Terminal?

ChromeOS Linux apps run in a container, and Linux clipboard behavior can differ from ChromeOS and Chrome. Terminal-like applications may use Ctrl+Shift+V for paste, but that shortcut is not universal across every Linux graphical application.

ChromeOS Terminal has settings named Automatically copy selected content and Mouse right clicks paste content. When automatic copying is enabled, selecting terminal text may copy it immediately. When right-click paste is enabled, right-clicking may paste instead of opening a conventional context menu. Google documents these options in the ChromeOS Terminal copy-and-paste documentation.

Try the following:

  • Use the application’s Edit menu if keyboard shortcuts behave unexpectedly.
  • Try Ctrl+Shift+V in a terminal-like application.
  • Check whether Terminal’s automatic-copy and right-click-paste settings match your intended behavior.
  • Test Chrome-to-Linux, Linux-to-Chrome, and Linux-to-Linux separately.
  • If all Linux apps fail, restart the Linux container rather than immediately resetting ChromeOS.

To restart Linux, right-click the Terminal app on the shelf and select Shut down Linux. Open a Linux app again to start the container. Google gives these steps in its ChromeOS Linux setup documentation.

Could an external keyboard or remapped key be responsible?

A keyboard problem is plausible when context-menu copy and paste work but keyboard shortcuts do not, or when Ctrl fails in several unrelated shortcuts.

  • Press Ctrl+L. If the address bar does not focus, the problem may involve the keyboard, a remapping, or the active app rather than the clipboard.
  • Test the built-in keyboard if you normally use USB or Bluetooth input.
  • Test an external keyboard if the built-in Ctrl key appears faulty.
  • Check keyboard settings and any customized key mappings.
  • Use the on-screen keyboard or context menu to determine whether the clipboard itself still works.

Hardware becomes more likely when multiple unrelated keys fail, keystrokes repeat or drop intermittently, the built-in and external keyboards behave differently, or the problem persists across accounts and after a restart. One website rejecting paste is not enough evidence of a hardware fault.

How should I recover copy and paste without resetting the Chromebook?

Use the least destructive steps first. The correct order depends on where the failure occurs, but this recovery ladder avoids deleting data or bypassing legitimate controls.

  1. Repeat the plain-field test. Select visible text, copy it, open the clipboard menu, and paste into a simple editable field.
  2. Try the context menu. This distinguishes keyboard input problems from clipboard or destination problems.
  3. Use plain-text paste. Press Ctrl+Shift+V when rich formatting is the issue.
  4. Close and reopen the affected tab or app. A single web editor or application can become stuck without affecting the rest of ChromeOS.
  5. Restart the Chromebook. Reproduce the problem after signing in again.
  6. Test another account or Guest mode. This helps distinguish an account, extension, or policy issue from a system-wide failure.
  7. Isolate Chrome extensions. If the problem occurs only in Chrome, investigate recently installed or updated extensions rather than installing a clipboard manager.
  8. Update ChromeOS. Use the normal ChromeOS update controls in Settings, then restart and test again.
  9. Contact an administrator. Do this when the failure follows a school or work account, source, destination, or management boundary.
  10. Consider recovery or Powerwash only last. Back up important local data first and use Google’s Chromebook recovery options documentation for the appropriate procedure.

Powerwash is disproportionate when copy and paste fails only on one website, in one Android or Linux app, in a secure field, or across a managed boundary. A reset cannot remove an administrator policy or make an incompatible application accept pasted content.

When is a Chromebook hardware fault plausible?

A hardware fault becomes plausible when copy and paste fails across simple fields, accounts, and applications and the physical keyboard shows other symptoms. Evidence includes a Ctrl key that does not work in any shortcut, multiple unrelated keys failing, repeated or dropped keystrokes, or different behavior between the built-in and external keyboards.

Before seeking repair, record whether context-menu copy and paste works, whether Ctrl+L works, whether the failure remains after a restart, and whether another keyboard changes the result. That evidence helps separate a keyboard fault from a ChromeOS, app, account, or policy problem.

Do not label the clipboard itself defective merely because a password field, exam website, PDF, terminal, Android app, or managed work site rejects paste. A clipboard problem is more credible only after the same failure is reproduced in simple editable fields using more than one input method.

Special cases: PDFs, files, images, and remote apps

Copy-and-paste behavior depends on what is being copied and where it is going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Ctrl+C work but Ctrl+V not work on my Chromebook?

If Ctrl+C places an item in the clipboard menu but Ctrl+V does nothing, the destination is likely not editable, is security-restricted, does not accept that content type, or is affected by an app or administrator policy. Test the same item in a plain editable field.

What is the Chromebook clipboard shortcut?

Press Search+V or Launcher+V to open the clipboard menu. Google’s current shortcut reference documents up to five copied items and allows navigation with Tab or the arrow keys.

Can a school or work administrator block copy and paste on a Chromebook?

Yes. Managed ChromeOS policies can restrict transfers between specified websites, apps, profiles, Incognito mode, Linux, Files, removable storage, and managed or unmanaged contexts. Contact the administrator if the problem follows your school or work account.

Why does copy and paste fail only in Linux or Android apps?

Linux applications and Android apps can implement keyboard and clipboard behavior differently from Chrome. Test the affected app’s own Edit or long-press menu, use Ctrl+Shift+V where appropriate in terminal-like Linux apps, and compare the result with Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Powerwash fix Chromebook copy and paste?

Powerwash is not a guaranteed fix. A reset cannot repair a website restriction, incompatible app, defective keyboard, or administrator policy, and it can remove local data. Use testing, restarting, updating, and account or app comparisons first; back up important data before considering recovery or Powerwash.

The Bottom Line

The decisive question is not simply whether copy and paste works; it is where the failure occurs. Use a plain editable-field test and Search/Launcher+V to determine whether ChromeOS received the copy. Then follow the result: fix selection or keyboard input, change the destination or paste format, restart Linux or an app, or contact a school/work administrator. Reserve Powerwash for a genuinely system-wide problem after backup.
