Browser extensions can slow pages or make a browser feel unresponsive when they use CPU or memory, run code on websites, or do background work. But a sluggish browser is not proof that an extension is to blame. Compare the same task with extensions disabled, then turn them back on one at a time while checking which browser process is busy. If the slowdown remains, investigate tabs, websites, system memory, background activity, and graphics rendering.
How extensions can affect browser performance
An extension may inspect or change webpage content, run scripts within a page, or perform work in the background. That activity can consume CPU or memory, add delay while a page loads, or make interactions feel slower. The effect depends on what the extension does, where it runs, and how it is used—not simply how many extensions are installed.
Microsoft’s Edge developer guidance recommends keeping content scripts small, limiting the pages where they run, loading code only when needed, and avoiding blocking or long-running synchronous work: Microsoft Edge extension performance guidance.
A 2024 study by Bihui Jin, Ying Zou, and Heng Li tested 72 representative Chrome extensions across 11 categories. It found that performance impact varied with factors including activation mode, code complexity, and privacy practices, and observed negative effects in some unintended use circumstances. Those findings describe the tested Chrome setup; they do not establish a typical slowdown for every extension or browser: 2024 Chrome extensions study.

Find out whether an extension is responsible
Change one thing at a time. Note the specific symptom—such as slow startup, delayed page loads, interaction lag, high CPU, or high memory—and reproduce it on the same site or task where possible. Then compare performance with extensions disabled. If the problem improves, enable extensions individually and repeat the task after each change. An extension that consistently brings the slowdown back is a stronger suspect than one that is merely installed.
- Record the symptom and conditions. Note which site or app is open, what action feels slow, and whether the problem affects one site or many.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Use the browser’s extensions management page to turn them off, then repeat the same task. In Firefox, Troubleshoot Mode provides a comparison with extensions and themes disabled.
- Check process activity. Look for a tab, extension, or other browser process using substantial CPU or memory while reproducing the issue.
- Re-enable extensions one at a time. Repeat the task after each change. If a particular extension reliably restores the symptom, leave it disabled or remove it and check whether performance recovers.
Microsoft and Mozilla both recommend isolating extensions rather than guessing from the installed-extension count: Microsoft Edge high CPU or memory troubleshooting and Firefox Troubleshoot Mode. Microsoft advises observing the browser for several minutes after each troubleshooting section.

Inspect CPU and memory by browser process
Microsoft Edge
Press Shift+Esc to open Edge Browser Task Manager. Sort by CPU or Memory and look for a tab, extension, subframe, or utility process that is busy while the symptom occurs. Ending a process can be useful as a temporary diagnostic: watch whether the load drops, but remember that ending a tab process may discard unsaved work. A busy process points to where to investigate; confirm the cause by isolating it and checking whether the symptom changes.
Firefox
Open about:processes to inspect resource use by tabs and extensions. For more detailed memory diagnostics, use about:memory. You can also start Troubleshoot Mode to compare behavior with extensions and themes disabled. Menu names and feature availability can vary by browser release. Mozilla’s guidance is available at Firefox Task Manager and Firefox Troubleshoot Mode.

Chrome and managed Windows accounts
Google’s cited Chrome troubleshooting guidance is for managed accounts on Windows. It discusses identifying process types and checking possible causes such as slow disk access, insufficient system memory, poorly performing web apps, and GPU- or graphics-heavy pages. It should not be treated as a universal consumer workflow for identifying extensions in Chrome: Chrome Enterprise troubleshooting guidance.
If the slowdown persists with extensions off
When disabling extensions does not improve the symptom, consider other sources of browser workload. A resource-heavy website or web app can remain slow on its own, and several demanding tabs can compete for memory. Low available system memory, slow disk activity, graphics rendering, or browser processes continuing in the background can also resemble an extension problem.

- Check the scope. If only one site or web app is slow, compare it with another site and inspect the affected tab’s resource use.
- Reduce tab load. Close tabs you do not need and check whether responsiveness improves. Mozilla notes that each tab requires memory and recommends using Firefox Task Manager to inspect tabs.
- Check system pressure. If the whole computer is low on available memory or disk activity is high, the browser may not be the original cause.
- Look for graphics symptoms. Video, WebGL, and canvas-heavy pages may use more CPU when they are rendered in software rather than with hardware acceleration.
Apply fixes in a low-risk order
Leave a reproducible extension disabled
If one extension consistently causes the slowdown, remove it or keep it off. If you need it, contact its developer with the affected site, symptom, and conditions. Keep extensions you actually use; reducing the count by itself is not a reliable performance fix.
Reduce demanding tabs and pages
Close unnecessary tabs and retest the affected site. If a particular web app remains resource-intensive, the extension isolation result and process view help distinguish its workload from extension activity.

Review Edge background activity and sleeping tabs
If CPU use stays high after Edge windows are closed, Microsoft recommends turning off Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed. For memory pressure from inactive tabs, Edge’s sleeping tabs feature can reduce background resource use; some sites can be added to an exception list. See Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting steps.
Investigate graphics rendering only when relevant
If the slowdown is associated with video, WebGL, canvas, or other graphics-heavy content, check edge://gpu in Edge for software rendering. Microsoft recommends checking the graphics-acceleration setting when rendering is software-only. Mozilla notes that hardware acceleration can reduce CPU and memory use in many cases and advises keeping graphics drivers current. These are diagnostic steps, not universal fixes: changing acceleration may not help when the cause is an extension, a website, or system resource pressure. See Edge high CPU or memory troubleshooting and Firefox performance settings.
Update or reset only if simpler checks do not resolve it
Mozilla recommends checking for Firefox updates. Refresh Firefox is a later option that restores default settings while preserving essential information. In Edge, reset restores some settings and resets extensions, while preserving bookmarks, history, and saved passwords; it also resets pinned tabs, the startup page, the search engine, and extensions. Because a reset changes configuration, try it only after identifying the problem as far as possible. See Refresh Firefox and Reset Microsoft Edge settings.
Edge’s extension performance detector may not be available to you
On September 19, 2024, Microsoft announced that an extension performance detector would begin rolling out to some Edge Canary 130 users. The announced feature could alert users to persistent extension-related slowdowns, show information about page-loading impact, and offer an option to disable an extension. The announcement does not establish availability in every current Edge channel, version, or region, so check your browser rather than expecting the alert: Microsoft’s detector announcement.
