Yes—AI-generated code can save time while creating more work later, but it does not always do so. The risk appears when a tool produces more code than people can thoroughly understand, review, test and maintain. Developers may finish an initial task faster, yet spend that time saving on validating behavior, correcting defects, removing unnecessary code, explaining unfamiliar designs and supporting later changes.
Recent studies reach mixed conclusions because they measure different parts of the software lifecycle. Some find faster delivery or higher task completeness; others find persistent static-analysis issues, more review work for experienced developers or weaker understanding of AI-assisted code. The practical question is therefore not “Does AI write code faster?” but “What happens to total human effort from implementation through production maintenance?”
What costs can AI-generated code add?
AI-generated code can increase lifecycle cost through four connected mechanisms:
- More code to inspect: A generated implementation may be longer, include unnecessary abstractions or touch more files than a focused human solution.
- More validation: Humans still have to establish that the code meets requirements, handles edge cases, respects security and performs acceptably.
- Less code understanding: A developer who accepts a solution they cannot fully explain may be slower when debugging or extending it later.
- Persistent defects and smells: Issues that survive review move the cost into testing, operations and future maintenance.
These are workload shifts, not a universal outcome. A small, well-tested change generated in a familiar module may reduce effort. A large change in a poorly understood or business-critical area can do the opposite. Evidence to date does not support a single industry-wide dollar figure for the maintenance cost of AI-generated code.

What does the large-scale Meta study actually show?
A 2026 study published through Schloss Dagstuhl examined more than 10,000 developers and 400,000 diffs. It found that diffs associated with AI-generated code were more common in less-central code, larger changes, test files and work by more-tenured authors. The AI-associated group also had lower raw review time and lower production-outage rates.
Those raw differences do not prove that AI reduced review effort or outages. The contexts were different: code in less-central areas is typically less risky and may attract faster review regardless of how it was written. The authors explicitly treat centrality and related factors as confounders. Read the study and its methods at Schloss Dagstuhl’s ESEM 2026 record.
The useful lesson is methodological. A comparison of AI and non-AI code must control for where the change lands, how large it is, whether it is test code, who wrote it and how critical the surrounding system is. A productivity result from one context cannot be transferred to every repository.
How often do issues in AI-authored commits persist?
A 2026 study by Liu and colleagues analyzed 302,600 verified AI-authored commits across 6,299 GitHub repositories. Static-analysis tools identified 484,366 distinct issues. Code smells represented 89.3% of detected issues, and 22.7% of tracked AI-introduced issues remained in the latest repository version examined.
These numbers describe the study’s static-analysis findings, not an industry-wide defect rate. A “code smell” can be a maintainability warning rather than a user-visible bug, and static analysis does not measure every defect. The study also does not convert the findings into labor hours or dollars. Its significance is that some issues survive the initial change and become part of the codebase that later developers must understand or remove.

Do experienced developers carry more review work?
An observational study of open-source projects reported that core developers reviewed 6.5% more code after Copilot adoption and experienced a 19% drop in original-code productivity. The figures come from Xu and colleagues’ 2025 preprint, “AI-assisted Programming May Decrease the Productivity of Experienced Developers by Increasing Maintenance Burden”.
Recommended Free Tools
Because this was an observational preprint, the figures are associations in the projects and period studied, not proof that the assistant caused every change. Adoption may coincide with changes in project activity, contributor mix or task difficulty. Still, the pattern illustrates a common organizational effect: generated code can increase the amount of material that senior developers must validate, even when the original author completes a task quickly.
Can developers finish faster while understanding less?
Yes. In an experiment with 69 participants, AI users achieved higher median task completeness but showed a 12.5% lower ability to answer technical questions about the code they had implemented. The study, published in IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, found that its time-based analyses did not provide strong evidence of an impact. Technical-question performance was used as a measure of code ownership, so it is not identical to long-term maintenance performance.
This distinction matters because elapsed task time measures only the first phase of work. A developer may submit a complete feature and still need extra time later to trace control flow, identify assumptions or safely change the implementation. Read the study at IEEE Xplore.
Why can more generated code create more deletion work?
JetBrains Research combined two years of telemetry from 800 developers with a survey of 62 professionals in its January 2026 longitudinal analysis. It reported that AI users produced substantially more code and also deleted significantly more code. The abstract does not provide a comparable numeric amount for either increase.
More deletion is not automatically bad: removing an obsolete implementation can be healthy. The concern is that higher production and deletion together may indicate a faster but more disposable coding loop, with additional effort spent reviewing, revising and discarding output. The analysis is summarized by JetBrains Research.

Does controlled maintenance research find a lasting quality penalty?
Not consistently. A Lund University study record reports no significant difference in later developers’ completion time or code quality when evolving code initially produced with or without AI assistance. The record covers 151 participants, 95% of whom were professionals.
Its publication field lists November 2026, which is after October 25, 2026, the date used for this article. Treat it as a forthcoming record rather than as a study already published by that date. The finding also does not cancel the other evidence: different tasks, tools, review practices and code contexts can produce different outcomes. The record is available at Lund University Research Portal.
What do productivity experiments say about time saved?
A 2025 enterprise randomized controlled trial involving 96 full-time Google software engineers estimated 21% less time on a complex task for the treatment group. The paper notes a large confidence interval and cautions against generalizing across tools and time periods. This is evidence of a possible task-speed benefit in one enterprise setting, not evidence that total review and maintenance cost fell.
Task completion time should therefore be paired with measures of review effort, rework, escaped defects, support incidents and later change time. The trial is available through IEEE Xplore.
How common is disclosure of AI-generated code?
An ACM study analyzed 613 GitHub snippets and received 111 valid survey responses. Among respondents, 76.6% said they always or sometimes self-declared AI-generated code, while 23.4% said they never did. Disclosure is relevant to maintenance because future reviewers need to know how an implementation was produced and what level of human verification it received.
These percentages describe the study sample, not all developers. They also do not show whether disclosure improved quality. The study is available at ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology.

What is the evidence comparing?
The studies answer different questions. Comparing them without separating the measured work leads to misleading claims.

How should a team measure the total workflow cost?
Track the whole path from prompt or specification to stable production behavior. A generation-speed metric alone can reward output that creates review or maintenance debt.
Measure initial implementation
- Elapsed time from accepted task start to a reviewable change.
- Lines or files changed, interpreted cautiously because size is not quality.
- Test coverage and whether tests validate meaningful behavior rather than merely increasing a percentage.
Measure review and rework
- Reviewer minutes, number of review rounds and time waiting for clarification.
- Changes requested for correctness, security, performance, design and readability.
- Code deleted or substantially rewritten before merge.
Measure post-merge maintenance
- Defects, rollbacks and production incidents attributable to the change.
- Time for an unrelated developer to understand and modify the code.
- Static-analysis findings that remain unresolved across later releases.
- Support and operational work caused by unexpected behavior.
Compare like with like: similar tasks, repository areas, change sizes, developer experience and review policies. Report uncertainty and confidence intervals where available. Do not turn a count of findings into a monetary loss unless your organization has measured the labor and operational cost behind those findings.
What practices reduce avoidable review and maintenance burden?
The following controls address the workload mechanism directly. They are engineering practices, not claims that any one cited study tested a particular checklist.
Constrain the change before generation
- Define the acceptance behavior, interfaces, error handling and non-functional limits first.
- Ask for a focused patch rather than a broad rewrite when the task does not require architectural change.
- Keep generated changes separate from unrelated formatting or dependency updates so reviewers can reason about intent.
Require human-readable rationale
- Record what the generated code is intended to do, what assumptions it makes and which alternatives were rejected.
- Require the author to explain control flow, data transformations and failure paths before approval.
- Mark generated sections in the change description when local policy requires disclosure.
Test behavior, not just compilation
- Add tests for boundary values, invalid input, authorization, concurrency and failure recovery relevant to the feature.
- Run existing tests, static analysis and security checks on the complete diff.
- Inspect generated tests for assertions that could pass without detecting a real regression.
Keep review proportional to risk
- Use additional reviewers for central, security-sensitive, data-integrity or high-traffic code.
- Split a large generated change into reviewable units with one clear purpose each.
- Do not infer low risk from a fast generation time or a clean-looking diff.
Make later ownership possible
- Prefer straightforward implementations over clever abstractions that the team cannot explain.
- Document domain rules and external contracts where the code alone cannot convey them.
- Revisit unresolved smells and warnings during normal maintenance rather than allowing them to accumulate.
When is AI-generated code most likely to increase costs?
Risk rises when several of these conditions coincide:
- The task is broad, ambiguous or spans many modules.
- The code sits in a central or safety-, security- or revenue-critical path.
- The author cannot explain the generated implementation without repeatedly consulting the tool.
- Reviewers are already overloaded or lack domain knowledge.
- Tests are weak, integration environments are slow or static-analysis findings are routinely waived.
- The project has high turnover, making future comprehension especially important.
Conversely, a narrowly scoped change in a well-tested, familiar area may have low incremental risk. The same tool can therefore reduce total cost in one workflow and increase it in another.

What should an organization conclude from the mixed evidence?
Do not treat AI-generated code as inherently expensive or inherently free. The strongest defensible conclusion is conditional: AI can move effort from typing to validation, review, explanation, rework and maintenance, and the size of that shift depends on task and code context.
Use controlled comparisons where possible, disclose the population and task, and separate association from causation. A result about initial task time is not a result about lifetime cost; a static-analysis count is not a bill; and a finding from less-central code does not describe a critical service. Teams that measure the complete workflow can identify where assistance is genuinely beneficial instead of optimizing only for code-generation speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI-generated code always require more maintenance?
No. A forthcoming Lund University study record reports no significant difference in later completion time or code quality between code initially produced with and without AI assistance. Outcomes vary with task scope, repository context, testing and reviewer expertise.

Use elapsed time to a stable, accepted change together with review minutes, rework, escaped defects and the time an unrelated developer needs to modify the result. This captures whether speed at generation survives the rest of the lifecycle.
Should developers disclose that a change used an AI assistant?
Disclosure can give reviewers useful context about how the implementation was produced and what explanation is expected, but the available survey does not show that disclosure itself improves quality. Follow your organization’s policy and record enough rationale for future maintainers.
Can static-analysis findings be converted directly into maintenance dollars?
No. The large-scale issue study reports detected and persistent findings, not the labor or operational cost of fixing them. A monetary estimate requires organization-specific measurements linking each issue type to review, remediation and production effort.
