AI assistants can recommend different consumer-electronics brands because they may use different models, answer configurations, web sources and interpretations of what “best” means. They can also vary from one response to the next. There is no evidence here of one brand that is best for every device and buyer: compare specific models against your needs, budget and region, then verify the evidence behind any AI-generated shortlist.
How much do AI brand recommendations vary?
Two studies illustrate disagreement, but neither establishes a universal rate for consumer-electronics questions.
One assistant may change its answer on another run
Delphi Monitor measured 1,017 repeated-answer cases across 188 questions, five assistants and eight brands in four businesses, with its latest measurement on 24 August 2026. The same assistant returned an identical set of named companies in 219 cases, or 21.5%. This is a result from that bounded business-focused panel, not a prediction for every assistant or electronics prompt. The report also notes that its questions were selected by participating businesses rather than sampled from search demand. Delphi Monitor’s report.
Different assistants often choose different leaders
In the same Delphi Monitor study, there were 166 questions on which at least three assistants named a company. All assistants shared the same most-named company on 11 of those questions; the report counted an average of 3.34 different top picks per question. That describes the study’s questions and scoring method, not the number of brands a shopper should expect to see for a particular product.

#1 Best Overall
A separate 2026 arXiv preprint reported 41.6% agreement on the top-recommended brand across 3,750 responses. Its experiment used 250 brand-free category queries, three models and five repeats per query, spanning five industries and 50 brands. It is exploratory and not specific to consumer electronics alone. Read the preprint.
Some overlap figures use a broader definition of “tech”
BrightEdge reports 88% average pairwise overlap among top-30 brands for its “tech” category across five engines. The statistic does not isolate consumer-electronics brands, so it should not be read as an electronics-only agreement rate. It is also not directly comparable with studies that count top picks for individual prompts: the category, prompts, systems and agreement measures differ. BrightEdge’s analysis.
Rank #2
Why do ChatGPT and Gemini give different product recommendations?
Different responses can result from several factors. The studies above document variation; they do not isolate how much each factor causes in recommendations for consumer electronics. No evidence here identifies the training sources, search results, personalization inputs or commercial relationships responsible for a particular brand choice.
Different models and answer configurations
Assistants do not all use the same underlying model or configuration. A response is generated for the prompt; it is not necessarily retrieved from a single, fixed brand leaderboard. Even a single assistant can return a different set of companies on another run, as the Delphi Monitor panel demonstrates. That measured variation does not tell us which component caused each change.

Generation can involve sampling
OpenAI’s Evals API Reference describes temperature as a sampling parameter and states: “A higher temperature increases randomness in the outputs.” This documents a possible source of variation in API-based generation. It does not reveal the settings used in consumer apps or prove that temperature explains a particular recommendation. OpenAI Evals API Reference.
Search may change the evidence available
OpenAI documents web search as a tool for finding relevant sources. An answer that uses live search may draw on different material from one that does not, and search results can change. Not every assistant searches, and assistants do not necessarily use the same search system or encounter the same results. OpenAI’s documentation.
“Best” is an incomplete shopping brief
A request for the “best brand” leaves basic questions unanswered: which product, for what use, at what price and in which country? The priorities for a television may differ from those for a phone, laptop or headphones. Government research on algorithmic rankings notes that factors such as brand loyalty and consumer preferences make ranking phones and tablets difficult to measure. That work studied simulated rankings, not current generative AI recommendations, so it helps explain the measurement challenge rather than prove how assistants choose brands. UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and Behavioural Insights Team report.
Which electronics brand is best?
There is no established universal winner. A brand’s reputation can be useful context, but it cannot tell you whether a particular model suits your budget, requirements, region or other devices. Start with the product category and the specific job it needs to do, then compare models rather than treating a brand list as a verdict.

NIQ’s 2026 Consumer Tech & Durable Goods consumer survey gives context for what shoppers say influences purchase decisions: 75% cited clear information on features and performance, 73% price promotions or discounts, 71% warranty and 70% brand reputation. These are reported consumer influences, not factors shown to drive AI rankings. The survey figures should not be treated as a ranking formula for either shoppers or assistants. NIQ’s survey.

Ask for model-level comparisons, then verify the details that affect your decision. Check the model number and date as well as the brand; specifications, prices, product availability and support terms can differ by region and change over time.
- Category and use: Specify the device and the tasks you need it to handle.
- Budget and local price: Compare like-for-like models at current prices in your region.
- Features and performance: Identify required features and look for independent measurements where available. Separate measured results from manufacturer claims and customer opinions.
- Warranty and support: Confirm current warranty terms and service availability where you live.
- Compatibility: Check how the device works with your existing hardware, software, accessories and services.
- Evidence and freshness: Inspect the cited sources, their dates and the exact model numbers they discuss. Treat AI-generated summaries as a starting point, not independent test results.
Give the assistant a more useful prompt
Instead of asking only “Which electronics brand is best?”, include the product category, budget, intended use and country. For example: “Compare current mid-range laptops under my budget for photo editing in Canada. Prioritize display quality and measured performance; show the model numbers, warranty terms and sources for each claim.” A more specific prompt makes the comparison criteria explicit, but the resulting claims still need checking against current sources.
