MagSafe support starts with the iPhone 12 series and continues through most newer models. However, not every recent iPhone has it: the iPhone 16e supports Qi wireless charging but does not have native MagSafe, while the iPhone 17e does support MagSafe.
The practical difference is the magnetic ring built into the iPhone. A MagSafe charger, wallet, battery pack, or stand can snap into place on a compatible iPhone or MagSafe case. Older Qi-only iPhones may still charge from a MagSafe charger, but they do not magnetically align or support the full MagSafe accessory experience.
Which iPhones Have MagSafe Support: Compatibility and Model Guide
iPhones with native MagSafe support
Apple lists the following iPhones as MagSafe-compatible:
Recommended Free Tools
- iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max

- All iPhone 15 models
- iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max
- iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 17e, and iPhone Air
These phones contain the magnetic alignment system required for MagSafe. You can attach a MagSafe charger or accessory directly to the phone, although a MagSafe-compatible case is usually preferable for protection.

What is the difference between MagSafe and Qi charging?
Qi is a wireless charging standard. MagSafe combines wireless charging with a magnetic alignment system and support for accessories that attach to the rear of the iPhone.
A MagSafe charger can charge a Qi-compatible iPhone that does not have MagSafe. This includes the iPhone 16e, iPhone 11 models, iPhone X-family models, iPhone XR, and iPhone 8 models. Place one of these phones manually over the center of the charger.
On a Qi-only iPhone, the charger will not snap into place, and the phone will not hold MagSafe wallets, stands, or battery packs magnetically. Charging can also stop if the phone shifts away from the charging coil.

Apple lists these models for up to 25W peak MagSafe charging:
- iPhone 17 Pro
- iPhone 17 Pro Max
- iPhone 17
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
You need all of the following:
- A MagSafe Charger with part number A3502, A3503, A2580, or A3250
- A USB-C power adapter rated at 30W or higher
- An adapter capable of at least 15V/2.0A
Peak wattage is a maximum under suitable conditions, not a constant charging speed. Temperature, battery level, the charger model, and connected accessories can reduce the actual rate.

Other MagSafe charging limits
| iPhone group | Maximum listed MagSafe rate | Requirements or notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Air | Up to 20W | Requires qualifying MagSafe hardware and power adapter. |
| iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro | Up to 22.5W | Requires qualifying hardware. |
| iPhone 17e and iPhone 15 and earlier | Up to 15W | Use MagSafe Charger A2140 with a 20W-or-higher USB-C adapter and suitable output. |
| iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini | Up to 12W | Apple specifies an adapter of at least 9V/2.03A for this rate. |
For the up-to-15W group, a USB-C adapter should provide 20W or more and output at least 9V/2.22A, 9V/2.56A, or higher. A power adapter providing only 12W at 5V/2.4A can run the MagSafe Charger, but charging will be slower.
What power adapter do you need?
For wireless fast charging, Apple recommends:
- iPhone 16 and later: a MagSafe Charger with an Apple 30W-or-higher USB-C adapter or a comparable third-party USB Power Delivery adapter.
- iPhone 15 and earlier: a MagSafe Charger with an Apple 20W-or-higher USB-C adapter or a comparable third-party USB-PD adapter.
The adapter does not have to be made by Apple. A third-party USB-C charger is suitable if it supports USB Power Delivery and meets the required wattage and voltage/current specifications.
Why is MagSafe charging slower than expected?
The charger was connected after the iPhone
For maximum power delivery, connect the MagSafe Charger to power before putting the iPhone on it. If you placed the phone on the charger first:
- Remove the iPhone from the charger.
- Wait three seconds.
- Place the iPhone back on the powered charger.
A USB-C or Lightning accessory is connected
Apple reduces wireless charging power when certain accessories, including headphones, are connected:
| Models | Charging limit with connected accessories |
|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max | 10W |
| iPhone 17 and iPhone Air | 16W |
| iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max | 7.5W |
| iPhone 15 and earlier | 7.5W |
The phone is too hot or too cold
MagSafe charging can warm both the charger and iPhone. If the phone gets too hot, iOS may limit charging above 80 percent to protect battery lifespan. Very hot or cold conditions can also slow or temporarily prevent fast charging.

The case or wallet is interfering
A case needs a compatible magnetic array to preserve MagSafe alignment. A regular case might allow wireless charging but weaken the magnetic connection or prevent accessories from attaching securely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRemove an iPhone Leather Wallet before placing a MagSafe Charger on the phone. Credit cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs should not be left between the phone and charger because the magnetic field can damage magnetic strips or RFID chips.
Leather cases can also develop circular compression marks after use with the MagSafe Duo Charger. Apple describes these marks as normal wear.
Does a MagSafe case add MagSafe to an older iPhone?
A case with a magnetic ring can make an older iPhone physically attach to some magnetic accessories. It does not add native MagSafe hardware to the phone.
For example, an iPhone 11 in a magnetic case may hold a magnetic stand more securely, but the phone remains a Qi-only device. It will not gain Apple’s native MagSafe charging behavior or the same accessory compatibility as an iPhone 12 or newer model with built-in MagSafe.

Is the MagSafe Duo Charger compatible with every MagSafe iPhone?
Apple designed the MagSafe Duo Charger for all iPhone 12, 13, and 14 models, as well as Apple MagSafe accessories and Qi-certified devices. Apple recommends a 20W-or-higher Apple USB-C adapter or a compatible third-party USB-C adapter.
The Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter is not compatible with MagSafe Duo Charger. If an iPhone is connected to both the MagSafe Duo Charger and power through its Lightning port, the iPhone charges through the Lightning connector.

The Bottom Line
Buy or use MagSafe accessories with confidence on any iPhone 12 or newer model listed above, including the iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. The main exception among newer phones is the iPhone 16e, which supports Qi but not native MagSafe. iPhone 8 through iPhone 11 and the iPhone X family can charge from a MagSafe charger only as manually positioned Qi devices. For the fastest results, match the charger part number and USB-C power adapter to the iPhone’s charging limit, and remove wallets or other objects from between the phone and charger.
