Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is the official Nintendo Switch release identified by Nintendo and Rockstar. It bundles Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in one collection. Nintendo’s UK listing dates the Switch release to November 11, 2021; Rockstar announced a physical Switch edition for December 7, 2021. The physical package requires an internet download.
The short answer: one Switch collection, three GTA games
Nintendo does not list three separate Switch purchases for these classic titles. The official Switch product is a single collection called Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Buying or downloading that collection gives you access to three games:
| Game | How it appears on Switch | Included in the collection? |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto III | Part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Yes |
| Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | Part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Yes |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Yes |
Rockstar describes the package as comprising those three genre-defining titles. In practical terms, “GTA on Switch” means this trilogy rather than a collection of individually sold ports.
What is included in The Definitive Edition?
Grand Theft Auto III
The collection includes the Switch edition of Grand Theft Auto III, the first of the three original games represented in the package. It is accessed through the trilogy rather than purchased as a separate Nintendo Switch release.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is the second included title. Nintendo and Rockstar identify it as part of the same updated collection, so the Switch buyer receives it alongside the other two games.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas completes the bundle. It is included in the same Switch product and is not listed as a separate official Switch purchase in the sources establishing availability.
When did the Switch version launch?
Nintendo’s UK product listing gives November 11, 2021 as the Nintendo Switch release date for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. That date is specific to the UK listing and should not be treated as a universal release-date statement for every regional storefront.
Rockstar separately announced a physical Nintendo Switch release for December 7, 2021. The two dates describe different launch details: Nintendo’s listing identifies the Switch product’s listed release date, while Rockstar’s announcement identifies the later physical-edition date.

Digital and physical editions: what changes?
Digital purchase
Rockstar’s announcement says the collection was available through the Nintendo eShop. A digital buyer should search the local eShop for the complete title, verify that the platform is Nintendo Switch, and check the regional product page before purchasing. Store listings, pricing, language options and availability can differ by country and can change over time.
Physical purchase
Rockstar announced a physical Switch edition for December 7, 2021. Nintendo’s UK listing carries an important qualification: an internet download is required for the physical version. The cartridge package therefore should not be interpreted as a completely self-contained copy that installs every required game file without an internet connection.
Before opening a physical copy, make sure the console can connect to the internet and has enough available storage for the required download. Nintendo’s statement establishes the download requirement, but it does not specify a universal download size in the product information cited here. Do not rely on a retailer’s “cartridge included” wording as proof that the full software is on the cartridge.

| Consideration | Digital edition | Physical edition |
|---|---|---|
| Where you get it | Nintendo eShop listing for your region | Retail or other local physical-game seller |
| Internet needed | Internet access is needed to download the purchase | Nintendo states that an internet download is required even for the physical version |
| What you receive | One digital collection containing three games | A physical Switch package for the same collection, with required downloaded data |
| Availability | Depends on the current regional eShop listing | Depends on local stock and the edition being sold |
Choose digital if immediate eShop access and not handling a cartridge matter most. Choose physical if you prefer a boxed copy, but plan for the download Nintendo specifies and confirm that the package is intended for your console’s region.

Are GTA 5 or newer GTA games on Nintendo Switch?
The official sources establishing Switch availability identify Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and its three included games. They do not establish an official native Nintendo Switch release for separate titles such as Grand Theft Auto V.
That is a deliberately narrow conclusion. It means the cited Nintendo and Rockstar availability information does not confirm Grand Theft Auto V as a native Switch game; it is not a claim that no other GTA-related experience has ever been discussed for another platform, through streaming, or through unofficial methods. If a listing claims that a Switch purchase includes GTA 5, check the publisher and Nintendo product details carefully before paying.
What does “Definitive Edition” mean here?
Nintendo describes the package as an updated collection of the three original games. Its product-page description lists updated lighting and environments, high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, and controls and targeting styled after Grand Theft Auto V.

Those are Nintendo’s stated product features, not independent performance measurements. They explain the intended presentation and control updates, but they do not guarantee identical image quality, frame-rate behavior or loading times in every section of every game. Treat the wording as a description of the edition’s design changes rather than as a laboratory benchmark.

How to verify that a listing is the official Switch collection
- Read the complete product name. Look for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, not a vague “GTA bundle” description.
- Check the platform. The listing should explicitly identify Nintendo Switch. Do not assume that a listing for another console or PC also supplies a Switch entitlement.
- Confirm the three included games. The official collection contains Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
- Check the edition format. For a cartridge, look for Nintendo’s warning that an internet download is required. For a digital copy, verify that the purchase is tied to the correct Nintendo account and region.
- Review the local storefront or retailer page. Nintendo’s UK listing and Rockstar’s announcement establish the release and edition details, but they do not guarantee current stock, current price or availability in every country.
What you need before downloading or installing
- A Nintendo Switch system compatible with the listing’s stated software platform.
- An internet connection, because Nintendo says the physical edition requires a download and a digital purchase must be downloaded.
- Sufficient free storage for the downloaded data. The cited product information does not state one universal storage figure, so check the current regional listing or the console’s download screen.
- A Nintendo account and access to the relevant regional eShop when choosing the digital edition.
- Time for any required software updates after installation. Rockstar’s support materials include Nintendo Switch in the title-update notes, showing that the Switch edition is supported through updates; the sources cited here do not specify a single current update size or version.
Common purchasing mistakes
Assuming the games are three separate eShop products
The official Switch product is the trilogy collection. Searching for each original title separately can lead to confusion because Nintendo’s identified release is the combined package.
Assuming a cartridge contains everything
Nintendo explicitly says an internet download is required for the physical version. Arrange internet access before starting installation, especially if the console will be used somewhere with limited connectivity.
Using a release date from the wrong region
The November 11, 2021 date comes from Nintendo’s UK listing. A different country’s storefront may display different dates, language information or availability. Check the listing serving your account and location.

Reading “GTA” in a listing as proof of GTA 5
The three-game Switch collection is not evidence that every GTA title is available on the platform. The official availability information here confirms the trilogy and does not confirm a native Switch release of Grand Theft Auto V.

What the official sources establish—and what they do not
Nintendo’s product listing and Rockstar’s announcement establish the identity of the Switch collection, its three games, the UK-listed November 11, 2021 release date, Rockstar’s December 7, 2021 physical-release announcement, and Nintendo’s required-download warning for the physical edition. Nintendo also describes the visual and control enhancements associated with the updated collection.
They do not establish current retail inventory, a universal price, the exact download size, identical availability in every regional eShop, or an official native Switch version of other separate GTA titles. Those details can change or vary by location, so they must be checked in the buyer’s local listing rather than inferred from the launch announcements.
Bottom line for Switch owners
If you want officially supported GTA games on Nintendo Switch, look for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It is one collection containing Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Digital and physical formats were announced, but Nintendo says the physical edition still requires an internet download. The cited official information confirms this trilogy; it does not confirm Grand Theft Auto V or another separate GTA title as a native Switch release. Verify your local Nintendo listing or retailer page for current stock, regional terms and download details.
