What is the difference between Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare Remastered?
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the original 2007 game, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a separate 2016 product that revisits its campaign and multiplayer with upgraded presentation. Buying one does not mean you own the other.

At launch, Activision stated that PC multiplayer supported up to 32 participants, compared with up to 18 on Xbox 360 or PS3. Those numbers describe the original release’s stated maximum match sizes in 2007. They do not show how many people play today, how easy it is to find a match, or whether servers are currently available.
The remastered release
Activision describes the remaster as an HD version of the original with improved rendering, textures, and lighting. Its multiplayer is not simply an upgrade applied to an existing original-game account: Activision says original-game statistics do not carry over.
For maps, Activision Support says the remaster launched with 10 multiplayer maps, with six more available by December 31, 2016. The publisher also lists a paid Variety Map Pack. Do not assume that every historic map or paid add-on is included with every standalone copy; check the specific edition and store listing before buying.

Start with the console or computer you actually plan to use, then decide whether you want the original 2007 release or the remastered edition. A product’s title alone is not enough to establish that a disc or digital purchase will work on a newer device.
Windows PC: original game or remaster
Choose the original Windows edition if the 2007 release itself is your priority. Choose the PC remaster if you want the upgraded presentation and want to confirm your computer against the PC store’s published minimums. Steam lists a 64-bit operating system, 8 GB RAM, and either a GTX 660 with 2 GB or a Radeon HD 7850 with 2 GB as minimum requirements. These are the remaster’s listed minimums, not specifications for the 2007 original or a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
Activision says only the remaster’s campaign is accessible offline on PC. If offline multiplayer is essential, the PC remaster does not meet that need according to the publisher’s support FAQ.

Xbox 360: original hardware, not an assumed newer-console route
If you own an Xbox 360 and want the original, the Xbox 360 retail edition is the direct match. Activision documented a standard physical release and a Limited Collector’s Edition. Confirm the edition and the disc’s condition when buying used; the Collector’s Edition is a distinct package, not a different generation of the game.
Do not assume an Xbox 360 copy will work on an Xbox One or Series X|S just because the game is part of the same franchise. The official compatibility information checked here does not confirm title-specific support for the original Call of Duty 4 disc on those newer consoles. For PS4 or PS5, the documented modern route is the PS4 edition of Modern Warfare Remastered. The US PlayStation listing explicitly says the PS4 game is playable on PS5, while cautioning that some PS4 features may be absent. Can you play the remaster offline or with someone locally?
Offline access differs by platform in the remaster, so choose according to how you plan to play. Activision Support states: “On Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Multiplayer and Campaign can be accessed offline.” It then specifies that on PC, only the campaign is accessible offline.
For console multiplayer, Activision confirms two-player online split-screen. The current Xbox listing also advertises local multiplayer for two to four players.
