Apple Pencil compatibility with iPad Pro M4
Apple lists the same two compatible Pencils for both M4 iPad Pro sizes. The generation matters: an older iPad Pro may support a different Pencil, so check the exact iPad model rather than relying on the description “iPad Pro.”

Choose Apple Pencil Pro for magnetic charging and extra features
Apple Pencil Pro is the option to consider if you want the documented squeeze and double-tap interactions, haptic feedback, Find My support, and magnetic pairing and charging on the iPad. Apple lists iPadOS 17.5 or later as the minimum requirement.

Choose Apple Pencil (USB-C) for cable charging
Apple describes Apple Pencil (USB-C) as suitable for note-taking, sketching, and document markup. It pairs and charges using a USB-C charge cable rather than charging magnetically; its magnetic attachment is for storage. It supports hover on both M4 iPad Pro sizes and requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later.
These documented differences explain the practical choice, but they do not establish which Pencil has better real-world drawing performance or value. The right fit depends on which features and charging method you want.

Why older Apple Pencil models are easy to confuse
Apple’s compatibility guide lists Apple Pencil (2nd generation) for earlier iPad Pro generations, including up to the 11-inch 4th-generation and 12.9-inch 6th-generation models, but not the M4 generation. Apple Pencil (1st generation) is not listed for either M4 iPad Pro, either. A Pencil that worked with an older iPad Pro should not be assumed to work with the M4 model.

- Confirm the iPad generation and size. Make sure the device is the iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) or iPad Pro 13-inch (M4), not an earlier iPad Pro with a similar screen size.
- Check the iPadOS version. Apple Pencil Pro requires iPadOS 17.5 or later; Apple Pencil (USB-C) requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later.
- Match the Pencil to your charging preference. Pro pairs and charges magnetically on the iPad; USB-C Pencil requires a USB-C charge cable for pairing and charging and attaches magnetically for storage.
Apple’s compatibility guide is the reference to use if a device listing omits its generation or you are checking another iPad model.
