To use Samsung DeX, you need a Galaxy model that supports the specific DeX route you want, plus either a wired HDMI connection or a compatible Miracast display. A dock, keyboard and mouse are optional rather than universal requirements.
Samsung compatibility differs by model, region and software version. Confirm your exact phone or tablet on Samsung’s current US support pages before buying an adapter, dock or monitor.
DeX requirements at a glance
DeX turns a supported Galaxy phone or tablet into a desktop-style workspace with resizable windows, a taskbar and mouse-and-keyboard controls. The equipment depends on whether you connect to a TV or monitor by cable, connect wirelessly, run DeX on a Windows PC, or use DeX directly on a tablet.
| Connection route | Required equipment | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wired TV or monitor | Supported Galaxy device; DeX cable, HDMI cable, or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; display with an HDMI input | USB-C alone does not guarantee video output or DeX support. HDMI disconnection can restart DeX. |
| Docked wired setup | Supported Galaxy device; DeX Pad or DeX Station, its power supply, HDMI cable and HDMI display | Some phones and tablets do not physically fit older docks. |
| Wireless TV or monitor | Supported Galaxy device; Samsung TV from 2018 onward, Samsung Smart Monitor, or another display supporting Miracast | Wireless DeX availability varies by model, and distance or wireless conditions can affect the experience. |
| DeX on a PC | Supported Galaxy model, compatible Windows computer and supported software | This is a separate feature. Samsung’s current US guidance says it is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. |
| Standalone tablet DeX | One of Samsung’s supported tablets | DeX runs on the tablet’s own screen; an external display is not required. |
Samsung’s current US connection instructions are the final authority for a particular model and connection type. A Galaxy family name, USB-C port or recent release is not, by itself, a compatibility guarantee.

Check your exact Galaxy model before buying anything
DeX support is determined by the precise model and the route you choose. A phone may support wired DeX but not wireless DeX, or support a monitor connection while lacking DeX on PC. Regional firmware and later software updates can also change the list, so use Samsung’s model selector rather than relying on a family name.
Wireless-capable families listed by Samsung’s US support page
The US support page lists wireless DeX for Galaxy S9 through S26 series, Note9, Note10 series and Note20 series, selected Fold and Z Fold generations and certain newer foldables, Galaxy A90 5G, and listed Galaxy Tab families. “Listed” matters: not every device in a broad family necessarily supports every DeX route.
Samsung specifically excludes the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series from Wireless DeX. It also states that the Z Flip7 FE and previous Z Flip models do not support DeX through a cable or HDMI, DeX on PC, or wireless DeX to a TV or monitor. These exclusions are easy to miss when a product page simply says “Galaxy.”

Why the US list should not be treated as worldwide
Samsung support pages can differ between countries and between connection types. The information above is US guidance; availability in another market may differ. Open the support page, select your country and exact model, and verify the route—wired, wireless, PC or tablet—before placing an order. Recheck after a major Android or One UI upgrade because Samsung’s PC support has changed with newer software.
Wired DeX: the most predictable TV or monitor setup
For a wired setup, the Galaxy device must support external-display DeX, and the display must have an HDMI input. Use one of these connection methods:
Rank #2
- 【7-in-1 Expansion Hub】 Transforms your phone/tablet into a workstation. Includes HDMI , USB 3.0 (5Gbps), two USB 2.0 ports, SD/TF card readers, and a USB-C PD charging port. One hub, full connectivity.
- 【Samsung DeX & Universal Compatibility】 Specifically supports Samsung DeX mode and works with any USB-C device that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Compatible with Samsung Galaxy, iPad Pro/Air (USB-C), iPhone 15/16/17, Android phones, laptops, and more. Please confirm your device supports DP Alt Mode before purchase.
- 【Plug & Play Desktop Experience】 No drivers or software needed. Connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to turn your phone into a desktop workstation for presentations, remote work, or classroom use.
- 【4K UHD External Display】Connect your laptop to a 4K UHD monitor, TV, or projector using an HDMI cable. Enjoy crystal-clear visuals for movies, gaming, presentations, or multitasking on a larger screen.
- 【15W Pass-Through Charging】 Charges your phone/tablet while using the hub, preventing battery drain during long work sessions. Important: 15W fast charging requires a separately purchased fast-charge adapter and USB-C cable (not included). Charging not supported for laptops.
- A Samsung DeX cable.
- A standard HDMI cable with a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
- A supported DeX Pad or DeX Station, plus its power supply and an HDMI cable.
The adapter is not interchangeable with every USB-C accessory. It must support video output suitable for the Galaxy model, and the phone or tablet must support DeX over that connection. If the display has only DisplayPort, DVI or USB-C input, you need an appropriate conversion path; Samsung’s basic setup instructions specifically describe connecting to an HDMI input.
Connect directly with a cable or adapter
- Turn on the TV or monitor and select the HDMI input you will use.
- Connect the DeX cable, or connect the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the Galaxy and attach an HDMI cable from the adapter to the display.
- Unlock the Galaxy if prompted. Accept the DeX prompt, or open Quick Settings and select DeX.
- If this is the first connection, follow the prompt to enable Full Desktop mode.
- Attach a keyboard or mouse if you want conventional desktop controls. Without one, the Galaxy can act as a touchpad.
Keep the Galaxy powered during long sessions. Some adapters and docks can pass charging power, but the amount and behavior depend on the accessory and device; do not assume that every HDMI adapter charges the phone.
Use a DeX Pad or DeX Station
- Connect the dock’s power supply.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the dock to the TV or monitor and select that HDMI input.
- Seat the Galaxy in the dock, removing a thick case if it prevents a proper connection.
- Unlock the device and accept the DeX prompt, or select DeX from Quick Settings.
Samsung warns that some phones and tablets will not fit the DeX Pad or DeX Station. Do not force a device into the connector. For a model that is too large or shaped differently, Samsung recommends using a DeX cable instead of relying on dock fit.
Disconnect without losing work
Save documents before unplugging HDMI. Samsung notes that DeX can restart when the HDMI connection is disconnected, which can close or rearrange active windows. Exit DeX from the on-screen controls when possible, then disconnect the cable or dock.
Wireless DeX: cable-free desktop output
Wireless DeX requires both a supported Galaxy model and a compatible display. Samsung identifies 2018-and-later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors and other displays that support Miracast screen mirroring. A TV that supports ordinary casting is not automatically a Miracast or Wireless DeX display.

- Built in fan to keep your phone cool while docked
- Multiple connection ports: 2 x USB-A 2.0, USB-C charging, HDMI output, Includes Fast Charge wall charger, USB-C cable and HDMI cable
- Fast charging is available when Fast Charge mode is selected and using provided wall charger and cables. If a non-Samsung or Samsung charger below 15 W (9 V, 1.67 A) is used, DeX Pad may not operate or may be damaged.
- US Version includes: Fast Charge Wall Charger, USB-C Cable, HDMI Cable, and Quick Start Guide
Start a wireless DeX session
- Turn on the Miracast-capable TV or monitor and open its screen-mirroring or wireless-display function if required.
- On the Galaxy, open Quick Settings and select DeX, or open Connected devices and choose DeX.
- Select the display from the detected-device list.
- Accept the connection request on the Galaxy and, when shown, on the TV or monitor.
- Use the Galaxy as a touchpad, or pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Wireless performance depends on radio conditions, distance and interference. Keep the Galaxy reasonably close to the display and avoid placing either device behind a large obstruction. If the display does not appear, confirm that its Miracast function is enabled and that the Galaxy model is listed for Wireless DeX.
Wireless DeX is not the same as Smart View mirroring
Smart View normally mirrors the Galaxy screen as a single image. DeX presents a desktop interface designed for windows, a taskbar and independent apps. Samsung’s FAQ asks whether DeX supports “Smart View wireless mirroring”; the practical answer is to choose the DeX control when you want the desktop workspace, rather than assuming that any Smart View-compatible display supports DeX.
Keyboard, mouse and other controls
External controls improve DeX but are optional. Samsung documents several combinations:
- USB keyboard and mouse connected through a suitable dock or hub.
- Bluetooth keyboard and mouse paired in the Galaxy’s Bluetooth settings.
- The Galaxy phone or tablet used as a touchpad during a DeX session.
- An S Pen or keyboard cover on relevant Galaxy tablet setups.
Pair Bluetooth accessories before starting a wireless session if you want to avoid navigating the initial connection with touch controls. For wired setups, check whether your adapter or dock provides enough USB ports; the HDMI adapter itself may offer no USB expansion.
DeX on a Windows PC is a separate route
Connecting a Galaxy to a TV or monitor is not the same as running DeX inside a Windows window. DeX on PC has its own supported-device and software requirements. Samsung’s current US support guidance says DeX on PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, and directs affected users toward Link to Windows instead.

If PC use is your goal, verify the current PC compatibility section for your exact Galaxy model and Windows software before buying a cable. A phone that works with a monitor can still be excluded from the PC feature, and a PC-compatible model may require software that is no longer available after an operating-system update.

Some tablets can switch into DeX mode without any external display. Samsung’s workspace instructions list Tab S4, Tab S6, Tab S7, Tab S8, Tab S9, Tab A9+, Tab S10, Tab S11, Tab A11+ and Z TriFold families among supported standalone workspaces. In this mode, the tablet itself is the display; you can add a keyboard cover, Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, but you do not need an HDMI cable, dock or Miracast TV.
Standalone support does not prove that a tablet supports every external-display route. Check the external-display and wireless entries separately, especially for FE models and newer software versions, using Samsung’s workspace instructions.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The display stays blank
- Confirm that the TV or monitor is on the HDMI input connected to the adapter or dock.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and reconnect the USB-C plug.
- Try a known-compatible DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; a charge-only USB-C cable cannot carry video.
- Unlock the Galaxy and select DeX from Quick Settings if no prompt appears.
- Check the exact model’s wired-DeX support rather than assuming that USB-C video output includes DeX.
The phone does not fit the dock
Remove the case and check the connector alignment, but do not force the device into the Pad or Station. Samsung’s fit warning applies to some phones and tablets; use a DeX cable when the device is physically incompatible.

- Verify that the display supports Miracast and that its wireless-display mode is enabled.
- Confirm that the Galaxy model appears in Samsung’s Wireless DeX list.
- Move the devices closer and reduce nearby wireless interference.
- Restart wireless-display mode on the TV or monitor, then reopen DeX in Quick Settings.
DeX disappears after an update
Recheck the software-version restrictions, particularly for DeX on PC. Samsung’s Android 15 and One UI 7 limitation applies to the PC route, not as a blanket statement that every form of monitor DeX has been removed. Use the current Samsung support page for your region and model.
A purchase checklist
- Write down the exact Galaxy model number, not just “Galaxy S,” “Galaxy Tab” or “Z.”
- Choose the route: wired monitor, wireless display, Windows PC or standalone tablet.
- Verify that route on Samsung’s current support page for your country.
- For wired use, buy only a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable and an HDMI cable if the adapter does not include one.
- Add a DeX Pad or Station only if your device physically fits it and you want its docking convenience.
- Add a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse only if touchpad control is insufficient.
- Before the first long session, test display resolution, charging and accessory pairing, then save work before disconnecting HDMI.
There is no universal DeX shopping list: a supported Galaxy, a suitable display connection and optional controls are the complete requirement. The exact model-and-route check is the step that prevents most incompatible purchases.
