Windows Resource Protection (WRP) protects essential Windows files, folders, and registry keys from being replaced. System File Checker (SFC) is a separate Windows utility that checks protected system files and can try to repair them. WRP is the protection mechanism; SFC is one of the tools used to check and repair files it protects.

What does Windows Resource Protection do?

WRP helps prevent applications or other processes from replacing essential files, folders, and registry keys installed with Windows. Microsoft says this protection helps prevent application and operating-system failures. It was introduced with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, replacing the earlier Windows File Protection system.

WRP works as an operating-system safeguard rather than as a scan that you start on demand. It covers more than files: protected folders and registry keys are also within its scope.

How does WRP relate to SFC?

WRP and SFC are complementary, not competing tools. WRP protects operating-system resources; SFC checks the integrity of protected system files and can attempt repairs. You run SFC from an account in the Administrators group.

Windows Resource Protection (WRP) Protection mechanism Helps prevent replacement of essential Windows files, folders, and registry keys.
System File Checker (SFC) Command-line utility Scans or verifies system files and attempts to repair them when a repair command is used.

Which SFC command should you use?

Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges, then choose the command that matches your goal. Microsoft’s current SFC command reference covers Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported recent Windows Server versions.

Goal Command Effect
Scan all protected system files and attempt repairs sfc /scannow Scans protected system files and attempts to repair problems it finds.
Check integrity without making repairs sfc /verifyonly Verifies protected files without repairing them.
Scan one file and attempt repair sfc /scanfile=<file> Checks and attempts to repair the specified file.
Verify one file without repair sfc /verifyfile=<file> Checks the specified file without repairing it.

For an offline Windows installation, SFC also accepts /offwindir and /offbootdir to identify the Windows and boot directories. The exact paths depend on the installation and recovery environment you are working with.

How to troubleshoot corrupted system files

For missing or corrupted system files, Microsoft’s support workflow runs DISM before SFC. In an administrator Command Prompt, run the commands in this order:

  1. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth to repair the running Windows image. In the documented procedure, Windows Update is used as the repair source by default.
  2. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow.
  3. Let SFC reach 100 percent before closing the Command Prompt window.

If Windows Update is not a suitable repair source, Microsoft documents using a Windows repair source and the DISM /LimitAccess option to restrict use of Windows Update. The required source and command depend on the Windows image available to you.

What SFC results mean

SFC reports what it found and whether it could repair the detected problems. Read the exact message rather than assuming a scan fixed every issue.

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” The scan did not find missing or corrupted system files.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Microsoft describes this as a successful operation.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Some detected files were not repaired. Review the SFC details in the CBS log to identify affected files; if the documented repair steps do not resolve the issue, Microsoft also describes manual replacement with a known-good copy or reinstalling Windows.
  • “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.” Microsoft advises trying the scan in Safe Mode and checking for PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders under %WinDir%WinSxSTemp.

How to inspect SFC details in the CBS log

To extract SFC-related entries, Microsoft Support shows using findstr to search for [SR] lines in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and save them to a text file. The CBS log can contain entries from multiple SFC runs, so use the date and time in the log to distinguish the latest scan from earlier ones.
