Most TVs can read USB drives formatted as FAT32 or NTFS, but there is no universal standard. Some models also support exFAT, FAT16, EXT2, EXT3, HFS+, or other formats, while another model from the same manufacturer may omit one of them. The exact TV model manual is authoritative. You must also check the USB port, drive power and capacity, and the video or audio file’s container and codecs: recognizing the drive does not guarantee that every file on it will appear or play.
What “USB format” means on a TV
People use “USB format” to mean two different compatibility layers.
The drive’s file system
The file system organizes folders and files on the flash drive or hard disk. Common examples are FAT16, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS. A television must support that file system before it can browse the drive. A drive can be perfectly readable on a computer yet invisible to a TV whose firmware does not include that file-system driver.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe media file’s container and codecs
Once the drive is mounted, the TV’s media player still has to support each file. A video container such as MP4 or MKV can hold different video and audio codecs, subtitles and profiles. TVs may list one file and skip another on the same drive because the second file uses an unsupported codec, audio track or bitrate. File-system support therefore answers only whether the storage is mountable; it does not settle playback compatibility.

File systems listed by TV manufacturers
These are documented examples, not a brand-wide promise. Always match the list to your exact model, operating system and region.
| Manufacturer or platform guidance | File systems named | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| TCL Roku TV support | FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3 and HFS+ | The page separates file-system support from supported media types and warns that unsupported files are not displayed. Some drives may need more power than the TV supplies. |
| LG USA viewing guidance (17 July 2026) | Recommends FAT32 or NTFS | For the cited guidance, LG recommends USB memory of 32 GB or less and external storage of 2 TB or less. These are recommendations for the covered models and instructions, not universal limits. |
| LG USA recognition troubleshooting (6 November 2025) | FAT32, exFAT or NTFS | The instructions identify an incompatible file system, insufficient hard-drive power and formatting errors as possible causes. The list demonstrates why one generic brand-level answer can be incomplete. |
| Sony UK model-family table | NTFS, FAT32, FAT16 and exFAT on many Android TV and Google TV families from 2015–2022 | The named X72K and W800 series do not support exFAT. The table applies to the listed families, not every Sony television. |
| Samsung model-specific electronic manual | FAT, exFAT and NTFS | The manual is evidence for that particular model document; it is not a guarantee for every Samsung model or year. |
TCL’s UK support page also gives FAT32 guidance for its cited instructions and says some USB sockets are reserved for maintenance. Consult the television manual to identify the multimedia port: TCL UK USB-key guidance.

Why support differs between apparently similar TVs
USB behavior is determined by the television’s hardware, operating system, media-player software and firmware. Manufacturers can change the supported file systems between model years, screen sizes and regional variants. Sony’s compatibility table is a clear example: exFAT is listed for many families but excluded for the named X72K and W800 lines. LG’s viewing page and its later troubleshooting page also expose different supported sets because they cover different instructions and support scenarios.

How to check your exact TV before formatting a drive
- Find the complete model number. Read the label on the rear of the set, open the TV’s Settings or About screen, or check the original purchase record. Include suffixes that identify region or tuner version.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page or manual. Search for the exact model number plus “USB,” “external storage,” “supported file systems” or “media playback.” Prefer the manual supplied for that model and the current regional support site.
- Confirm that the socket is a media USB port. Some ports are service or maintenance connectors and will not browse videos, photos or music. The manual may label a multimedia port separately or describe which input to select.
- Record the accepted file systems and capacity guidance. Note whether the model names FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, HFS+ or another format, and whether it specifies a maximum flash-drive or hard-drive size.
- Check media-player specifications separately. Look for supported containers, video codecs, audio codecs, subtitle formats, resolutions and frame-rate limits. A drive that mounts successfully can still show an empty list for an unsupported file type.
- Check power requirements. Compare the TV’s USB output with the current required by the drive. A bus-powered hard disk may need more power than the television can provide.
Which file system should you choose?
There is no single best choice. Use the first file system that your exact manual explicitly supports, then choose the one that fits your computer and file sizes.
| File system | When it may be appropriate | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| FAT16 | Older televisions and devices that explicitly list it. | Whether the model supports the required drive capacity and folder structure; newer TVs may not list it. |
| FAT32 | Frequently listed for broad compatibility and commonly recommended in TV instructions. | Whether the TV’s manual requires it and whether your individual media files fit its file-size rules. |
| exFAT | Useful when the TV and your computers both explicitly support it, particularly for larger files. | Support varies sharply by model family; Sony’s X72K and W800 examples exclude it even though other Sony families list it. |
| NTFS | Listed by many modern sets, including the cited LG, TCL, Sony and Samsung documentation. | Confirm that the television can read NTFS and that the drive is not encrypted or otherwise restricted. |
| EXT2, EXT3 or HFS+ | Relevant only where a particular platform, such as the cited TCL Roku guidance, names them. | Do not assume support on another Roku TV or another manufacturer’s set. |
Formatting changes the drive’s file system and erases its contents. LG USA states: “When formatted, all data saved on the USB storage device is deleted and the file system is formatted to FAT32, exFAT or NTFS.” Copy files to another location before formatting, and verify the destination drive letter or device name so you do not erase the wrong disk.

Capacity, power and port limits
Capacity recommendations are model-specific
LG USA’s 17 July 2026 viewing guidance recommends USB memory of 32 GB or less and external storage of 2 TB or less, warning that larger devices may not work smoothly. Treat those figures as the cited LG recommendations, not as a universal USB limit. Another TV may accept a larger disk, reject a smaller one, or require a particular partition layout.

Bus-powered hard drives can fail to start
A portable hard disk may draw more current during spin-up than the television’s USB port supplies. The result can be a drive that never appears, repeatedly disconnects or makes clicking and restarting sounds. LG’s 6 November 2025 troubleshooting material cites insufficient hard-drive power as a recognition problem and gives a recommended external-drive rating of 5 V and 500 mA or less for the covered instructions. Compare the figures in your own manual; do not treat that rating as universal.

Hubs and extension cables add another variable
Use a direct connection unless the manual explicitly approves a hub or extension cable. Unpowered hubs can divide the available current, and long or damaged cables can cause intermittent detection. If the model supports it, a separately powered external drive can solve a power deficit, but it does not solve an unsupported file system or codec.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preparing and formatting a USB drive safely
- Back up everything. Formatting is destructive. Open the backup and confirm that important photos, documents and media are present before proceeding.
- Choose the file system from the TV’s documentation. Do not format as exFAT merely because another TV supports it, and do not downgrade to FAT32 without checking file-size and capacity implications.
- Format on a computer using the exact device. Select the removable drive by its name and capacity, choose the documented file system, and allow the format to complete. If the TV’s manual provides an in-TV format function, follow that procedure instead.
- Copy a small test set first. Use a few files whose containers and codecs are known to be supported. Keep folder names simple while testing.
- Eject the drive properly. Eject it from the computer before unplugging. On the TV, use its USB or storage menu’s safe-eject command when one is available; LG’s troubleshooting guidance specifically describes safe ejection.
- Connect directly to the documented media port. Select the TV’s USB or Media input and wait for the drive index to finish before removing it.
Troubleshooting: the drive or files do not appear
The TV says no USB device is connected
- Recheck that the socket is a multimedia port, not a service connector.
- Try the exact file system named by the manual. An unsupported format prevents mounting.
- Disconnect hubs and extension cables and test a direct connection.
- Check the drive’s voltage and current needs. Try a lower-power flash drive or an approved separately powered disk if the TV cannot supply enough current.
- Test another USB socket only if the manual identifies it as a media port; socket position alone does not prove functionality.
- Inspect the cable, connector and drive on a computer. A failing disk can mimic a compatibility problem.
The drive appears, but the folder is empty
- Check that the files are in a supported media category. TCL’s Roku guidance says unsupported file types are not displayed at all.
- Confirm that the TV’s media player supports the container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles and profile used by the file.
- Copy one short, standard test file to the root of the drive. If that plays, the original file or folder structure is the likely issue.
- Remove encryption, password protection and computer-only metadata that the TV cannot interpret.
The file is listed but will not play
This is a media-format problem rather than necessarily a USB-format problem. Consult the model’s playback table, then create or obtain a version using a supported container and codecs. The same NTFS or FAT32 drive can contain both playable and unplayable files.
Quick Recap
Playback stops or the drive disconnects
- Suspect power delivery if the problem is worse with a mechanical hard disk or during seeking.
- Try a shorter cable, a direct port and a drive with lower power demand.
- Check whether the TV has a documented capacity limit or partition requirement.
- Safely eject the drive, back up its contents and check it for file-system errors on a computer before using it again.
Practical setups to consider
| Your situation | Reasonable starting point | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Small collection of photos or standard videos | A flash drive in FAT32 | Use only if the exact TV lists FAT32 and each file meets the model’s limits. LG’s cited recommendation is USB memory of 32 GB or less. |
| Large files and a TV that lists exFAT | exFAT flash drive or disk | Verify exFAT for the exact model; support is not universal, even within one brand. |
| Existing computer drive already in NTFS | Keep NTFS | Appropriate only when the TV manual lists NTFS and the disk’s capacity, power and partition layout are accepted. |
| Portable hard disk that is not detected | Lower-power or separately powered storage | Confirm the TV’s USB power rating and any approved connection method before buying or reformatting anything. |
| Old television with unusual requirements | The file system named in its original manual | Do not substitute a newer model’s recommendations; firmware and hardware may differ. |
What to remember
- FAT32 and NTFS are common, but neither is guaranteed on every television.
- exFAT, FAT16, EXT2, EXT3 and HFS+ are model- or platform-dependent.
- The exact model manual outranks a general brand list.
- A media USB port, adequate power and an accepted capacity are prerequisites before file compatibility matters.
- Drive recognition and media playback are separate tests.
- Back up before formatting because formatting deletes the drive’s contents, and safely eject the device when the TV provides that option.
