When an AI assistant gives a weaker or inconsistent answer, do not assume the prompt is the problem. First identify what changed: the task may be unclear, key information may be missing, context may be distracting, the assistant may lack current facts, settings may be unsuitable, or the service may have encountered an error. Then make one targeted change and check the result.
Diagnose the answer before rewriting the prompt
Different causes call for different fixes. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance recommends examining examples of failures before choosing an optimization. Google’s Gemini API troubleshooting guide documents other possibilities, including transient errors, unsupported models or parameter values, token limits, safety blocks, and output problems. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of any individual response.
- The answer missed the task: Your request may be ambiguous, or it may omit an important constraint.
- The answer lacks support: The assistant may not have the current or specialized information the question requires.
- More context made things worse: Added material may be irrelevant, excessive, or unclear about what matters.
- The output is incomplete or blocked: A limit, safety filter, configuration issue, or temporary service problem may be involved.
Make one focused correction at a time
1. Restate the job clearly
Specify what you want done, who the answer is for, and the format or level of detail you need. Include only the facts and constraints that could change the answer. The Associated Press’s consumer guide to AI chatbots summarizes provider advice to make prompts clear, specific, and contextualized. Google likewise recommends concise, direct instructions for its current Gemini reasoning models in its prompting strategies.
2. Ask a targeted follow-up
Identify the part that is missing, incorrect, or inconsistent and ask for that part to be corrected or explained. For example: “You gave two different dates. Which one is supported by the source, and what source are you using?” A follow-up can clarify the task, but it does not guarantee that the revised answer is accurate.

3. Supply or retrieve the information the answer needs
If the question depends on your own document, data, or circumstances, provide the relevant material rather than assuming the assistant already has it. For recent or obscure public facts, use a search or grounding feature if the product offers one, then inspect its sources. Google describes Search grounding as a way to connect Gemini to current web content in its prompting strategies. Grounding can help locate evidence; it does not prove every statement in the answer.
4. Remove context that is not helping
More background is not automatically better. OpenAI notes that long inputs can make it harder for models to attend equally to information throughout a prompt, a problem sometimes described as “lost in the middle.” Keep the relevant task and constraints clear, and remove material that does not affect the answer. For Gemini 3.x, Google’s current guidance says to put the specific question after large data context.

Check settings, errors, and blocked output when applicable
In a consumer chat app, available controls differ by product, account, and interface; the API advice below does not imply that the same settings are exposed in chat.
For developers using an API
Check that the selected model supports the request, that the API version and parameter values are valid for that model, and that token limits are not cutting off the input or output. Follow the provider’s error-specific guidance rather than repeatedly resending every failed request. Google recommends exponential backoff for retryable transient errors such as 429 and 503, but says client errors such as 400 or 403 should not be retried as though they were temporary. Its troubleshooting guide gives the API-specific details.

For refusals or missing answers
A refusal or absent output may reflect safety filtering or unsupported content rather than poor wording alone. Google’s safety and factuality guidance describes controls for its API and AI Studio. In any product, follow the relevant service’s rules and use its available interface to understand or adjust permitted settings.

A fluent, polished response is not evidence that its claims are correct. For consequential decisions, check reliable primary sources or consult a qualified professional as appropriate. Search grounding may make sources easier to find, but read those sources and confirm that they support the specific claim you plan to rely on.

Compare assistants on the task you need done
If you can choose a model or service, compare it against the work you actually do rather than looking for a universally best assistant. Useful criteria include whether it provides inspectable factual sources, handles the relevant files and context, follows your requested format, and fits your practical cost, latency, and access constraints. OpenAI frames accuracy improvement as choosing and evaluating among different levers; Google’s API documentation also discusses model support, parameters, latency, and token considerations. Neither guide establishes that one assistant is best for every user or task.
