Do not run toward, feed, touch, or crowd a wild animal. Create distance, keep children and pets close, leave the animal an escape route, and follow the species-specific advice for your location. The correct response to a bear is not the same as the response to a mountain lion, charging bison, moose, or snake.

The instructions below are based mainly on current U.S. National Park Service guidance, including Yellowstone, Alaska, North Cascades, and Little River Canyon. Distance rules and emergency procedures vary by park and region, so read the destination’s current wildlife page before you travel.

What to do in the first few seconds

Stop and assess rather than reacting automatically. Sudden movement, a sprint, or an attempt to take a close photograph can turn a brief sighting into a dangerous encounter.

  1. Keep the animal in view without advancing. Do not block its route, separate it from young, or move between it and food, a carcass, or cover.
  2. Gather people. Call children to you, pick up a small child when the species guidance calls for it, and keep your group together. Recall dogs and hold them on a leash where permitted.
  3. Increase distance. Back away slowly when that is the recommended response. If the animal approaches, you are responsible for moving back to maintain the local minimum distance.
  4. Use available cover. A vehicle, substantial tree, building, or other solid barrier can help with some large animals. Do not run blindly toward a cliff, dense brush, or another hazard.
  5. Call for help for an injury or immediate threat. Move to safety first, then contact emergency services or a ranger. Report unusually aggressive or habituated wildlife.

Wild animals can react defensively when people get close, especially when young are nearby, during mating season, or around food. Apparently calm behavior does not make close approach safe.

Prevent an encounter before it becomes urgent

Keep the animal’s escape route open

Never surround wildlife for a better view. Leave a clear path away from you, and do not stand between an adult and its young. Avoid dense vegetation, blind corners, stream bends, feeding areas, and carcasses where visibility is poor. Make enough ordinary noise to avoid surprising an animal, while obeying local rules about quiet zones.

Control children, dogs, and food

  • Keep children beside you, not several yards ahead on a trail.
  • Leash pets where required and prevent dogs from chasing or cornering wildlife.
  • Store food, garbage, toiletries, and other scented items in the animal-resistant containers required by the park.
  • Do not offer food or water, touch an animal, or attempt a close selfie.

Follow the local distance rule

Yellowstone’s current park guidance requires at least 100 yards (91 meters) from bears, wolves, and cougars, and 25 yards (23 meters) from other animals listed there, including bison and elk. Those are Yellowstone rules, not a universal standard. Another park may set a different distance or impose seasonal closures; check its current regulations before setting out.

Bear encounters

Bear behavior and local instructions matter more than a single generic trick. As the National Park Service puts it, “Remember every bear encounter is different.” First determine whether the bear has noticed you.

If the bear has not noticed you

Do not call out, approach, or try to pass close by. Leave quietly by the route you came, increasing distance without sudden movement. If you cannot leave safely, wait for the bear to move away while keeping people and dogs controlled.

If the bear has noticed you

  1. Stay calm and speak in a calm, confident voice so it can identify you as a person.
  2. Keep the group together. Pick up a small child, avoid screaming, and do not make sudden movements.
  3. Slowly wave your arms if local guidance recommends it, put away any food, and keep your pack on.
  4. Avoid direct eye contact, watch the bear, and back away slowly. Do not turn your back or run.

A bear may be defensive, curious, or predatory; a bear with cubs, a carcass, or a blocked escape route presents a different risk from a bear merely passing through. Do not assume that one response fits every behavior. Follow the park’s current bear page and ranger instructions.

Bear spray and a charging bear in Yellowstone

Yellowstone advises carrying bear spray in an accessible holster rather than buried in a pack. Its guidance says to deploy it when a charging bear is 60 feet (18 meters) away or less. This threshold is Yellowstone-specific; confirm the instructions and legal requirements where you are traveling. Bear spray is not a universal defense against every dangerous animal and does not guarantee safety.

If a bear makes contact

For the defensive-contact situation described in Yellowstone guidance, drop onto your stomach, keep your pack on, protect your neck and face, remain still and quiet, and wait several minutes after the bear leaves before moving. A predatory attack is different, and other jurisdictions may give different instructions. North Cascades National Park’s guidance states: “If a black bear, cougar, or wolf attacks you, stay on your feet and always fight back.” Because those directions depend on species and behavior, consult the destination’s current guidance rather than combining them into one rule.

Mountain lion or cougar encounters

These instructions specifically address North American mountain lions (cougars); they should not be generalized to leopards, jaguars, or other big cats in other regions. The National Park Service describes the goal as convincing the lion that you are not prey and may be dangerous.

  1. Do not run. Running can trigger a chase response.
  2. Face the lion and stay upright. Do not crouch or bend over. Make yourself look larger by raising your arms, opening a jacket, or holding an object overhead.
  3. Speak firmly. Use a strong voice while backing away slowly.
  4. Keep children close. Pick up a small child without turning away or crouching if you can do so safely.
  5. Give it an escape route. Never approach kittens or a lion that is resting; move away and let it leave.

If the lion attacks, fight back, try to remain standing, and protect your head and neck. Do not play dead. Report the encounter to park staff or wildlife authorities, particularly if the animal followed people or showed no fear.

Bison and other large herbivores

When a bison charges

Do not apply bear or mountain-lion advice to a charging bison. Yellowstone says to immediately walk or run away. If the bison follows, use bear spray while moving away and seek cover behind a tree or vehicle. Yellowstone notes that a bison can run three times faster than a human, so trying to stand your ground is unsafe.

Warning signs can include head bobbing, staring, pawing, bellowing, or a raised tail. Leave long before the animal reaches that point. Stay at least 25 yards (23 meters) away in Yellowstone and never approach for a photograph.

Yellowstone reported that a 12-year-old visitor was injured by a bison near Mud Volcano on June 26, 2026; the release said the incident was still under investigation when published. The same National Park Service release said, specifically for Yellowstone, that bison have injured more people there than any other animal. Neither statement is a nationwide injury ranking or a measure of your individual odds.

If a moose notices you or knocks you down

Alaska NPS guidance says not to alert a moose that has not detected you. If it has detected you, speak softly and move away slowly. Give a cow with calves extra space.

If a moose knocks you down, curl into a ball, protect your head with your arms, keep still, and move only after the moose has backed off. Unlike a bison charge, this situation does not call for running after you are down.

Snake sightings and bites

When you see a snake

Leave it alone. Do not move closer to decide whether it is venomous, and do not handle, provoke, kill, or capture it. The National Park Service says, “The NPS does not encourage visitors to get close enough to a snake to try to determine whether it is venomous or not, and wildlife should not be handled regardless.”

Give the snake room to cross the trail. If it blocks your route, wait at a safe distance or choose another path; do not step over it or attempt to move it.

After a bite

  1. Get away from the snake without attempting to catch or photograph it.
  2. Keep calm and have someone contact emergency services.
  3. Obtain medical treatment even if symptoms are not immediate.

Do not rely on improvised remedies or detailed first-aid instructions from an unverified source. Tell dispatchers where you are and describe the snake only from a safe distance. This guide is wildlife-safety information, not a substitute for emergency dispatch or a clinician’s instructions.

Other dangerous wildlife

There is no single worldwide maneuver for every species. Use the broad safe default—do not approach, crowd, feed, or handle the animal; back away to create space; and seek cover or professional help—then follow local instructions for that species.

Situation Immediate response Important qualification
Bear has not noticed you Leave quietly and avoid surprising it. Keep distance and follow the local bear plan.
Bear has noticed you Stay calm, identify yourself, keep children close, and back away slowly. Defensive, curious, and predatory behavior require different decisions.
Mountain lion observing or approaching Face it, look larger, speak firmly, and back away; do not run. Fight back if attacked and protect head and neck.
Bison charge Walk or run away immediately; use cover if pursued. Yellowstone-specific advice; bison outrun people.
Moose knocks you down Curl up, cover your head, stay still, and move after it backs off. Alaska NPS guidance; give cows with young extra space.
Snake on trail Wait or go around at a safe distance. Never handle or step over it.
Any animal causes an injury Reach safety, call emergency services, and obtain medical care. Report the location and behavior to rangers or wildlife authorities.

How to prepare before hiking or camping

  • Read the destination’s current wildlife, food-storage, and minimum-distance rules. Seasonal closures and species guidance can change.
  • Tell everyone in your group what to do before entering wildlife habitat, including who will hold a child, who will control a dog, and where emergency contacts are stored.
  • Carry only safety equipment you know how to use. In bear country, Yellowstone recommends accessible bear spray in a holster; verify local regulations and practice removing the safety clip without spraying people or equipment.
  • Keep a charged phone, map, water, and a way to signal for help. Do not depend on cell coverage in remote terrain.
  • Secure food and scented items whenever the park requires animal-resistant storage, and keep your campsite clean.
  • At trailheads, note ranger stations, emergency numbers, and evacuation routes. Report a close or aggressive encounter promptly so officials can warn others.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

Mistake Why it increases risk Safer alternative
Running from every animal It can trigger pursuit and is specifically wrong for some encounters. Use the species and behavior guidance: back away for bears and lions; run away from a charging bison.
Getting closer for a photo It removes the animal’s escape space and violates distance rules. Use a long lens from a legal distance or leave.
Letting a dog investigate A dog can chase, corner, or bring an animal back to you. Leash and control the dog; retreat together.
Leaving food or scented items out It can attract wildlife and create defensive behavior. Use required animal-resistant storage.
Trying to identify a snake up close You may be bitten without gaining useful information. Keep away and seek medical care after any bite.
Assuming one park’s rule applies everywhere Distances and response instructions differ by jurisdiction. Check the current rules for the exact park, trail, and season.

When to call for help

Call emergency services immediately for a bite, trampling, serious fall, loss of consciousness, breathing difficulty, or any injury that cannot be safely managed while evacuating. Give your location, trail name or coordinates, number of injured people, and whether the animal is still nearby. Do not return to retrieve gear or approach an injured animal. Once safe, notify a ranger about aggressive behavior, an animal that followed people, a carcass near a trail, or a food-conditioned animal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rule is simple but not species-blind: make space, keep people together, avoid surprising wildlife, and use the local authority’s instructions for the animal and behavior in front of you.
