If an AI-generated profile, voice, video, or message is using your identity, save evidence and report it to the platform hosting it. If someone has accessed an account you control, use that provider’s recovery process and secure the account. If your personal or financial information has been used, contact the affected companies and follow the free recovery steps at IdentityTheft.gov. These are different problems and may need different responses.
This guidance is U.S.-focused because it uses U.S. agency reporting and recovery services. Outside the United States, contact the relevant platform, local privacy or consumer-protection regulator, and law enforcement as appropriate. Removal rights and other legal remedies depend on your location and the facts.
First, identify what has happened
An AI-generated persona or piece of media using your name or likeness does not, by itself, mean someone accessed your accounts. Treat the incident according to the harm you can verify:
- Fake profile, voice, video, or message: preserve evidence and report the content to the service hosting it.
- Your account is sending messages or has unfamiliar changes: assume it may be compromised and recover it through the provider.
- Your financial or identity information was used: contact the affected institution or company and follow identity-theft recovery steps.
Preserve evidence and report the impersonation
Save what you can safely access
Before content disappears, record its URL, account handle, platform, and the date and time you found it. Take screenshots of the profile, posts, messages, and any visible account or financial activity. Keep original messages where possible. Do not send sensitive information to anyone offering to recover your identity or remove content for a fee.

Report the content to the hosting service
Use the platform’s own impersonation, privacy, or safety reporting process. The service hosting the material is the first place to request a review or removal. A report does not guarantee that content will be removed or that an investigation will follow. The FBI likewise advises users to report accounts impersonating IC3 to the social platform.
Recover an account if someone else may control it
Use the account provider’s official recovery instructions, reached through a known genuine website or app—not through a link sent by the suspected impersonator. Once you regain access, secure the account and check what the intruder may have changed.

- Change the password to a unique one.
- Sign out of other devices or sessions if the provider offers that control.
- Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and other account recovery details; remove unfamiliar ones.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if available.
- Check recent activity, sent messages, and account changes. Tell contacts if messages were sent in your name.
The FTC’s guidance on recovering a hacked email or social media account explains provider-led recovery and post-recovery steps. For supported accounts, a physical security key is one available two-factor authentication option; the FTC describes security keys as the strongest method because they do not use credentials hackers can steal. Compatibility and account recovery support vary by service, so check those before relying on a key.
Respond to financial or identity information misuse
If someone used your personal or financial information, contact the bank, company, or other institution where the fraud occurred using contact details you already know are genuine. Ask it to secure, close, or freeze affected accounts where appropriate, and change relevant logins and PINs.

Then use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps. The site lets you report identity theft to the FTC and provides a recovery plan tailored to the information you enter. Keep any case or report details with your evidence.
Consider credit protections when credit information is involved
If the misuse involves credit, IdentityTheft.gov explains fraud alerts, credit freezes, and ways to dispute or block fraudulent information. These are credit and identity-theft protections; they are not tools for removing a fake social profile. See IdentityTheft.gov’s explanation of your rights for the conditions and options.

Choose the reporting route that matches the incident
Different reporting channels serve different purposes. A platform report requests review of hosted content; an account provider handles account recovery; consumer and crime reports document suspected fraud or crime. None guarantees a takedown, prosecution, or recovery of lost money.

Not every impersonation is automatically a federal crime. Choose the reporting channel based on what happened rather than assuming a report will produce a particular outcome.

Watch for fake recovery offers and official-looking scams
Do not trust an unexpected call, message, or video just because it appears to come from an agency or business. The FTC warns, “Don’t trust your caller ID. Your caller ID might show the name of a government agency or business, but caller ID can be faked.” Verify contact through a phone number or website you independently know is official.
The FBI’s July 20, 2026 alert describes scammers using AI-generated videos impersonating officials and spoofed complaint sites to collect personal information. For the specific IC3 impersonation scheme, the FBI says IC3 does not use social media to recover funds or contact victims through phone, email, social media, apps, online chat, or forums. Do not provide information or pay someone claiming to be IC3 through those channels; navigate to the official IC3 site yourself.
What the law and your data rights can—and cannot—tell you
Legal rights concerning a person’s likeness, access to data, deletion, and an AI agent’s conduct vary by jurisdiction, service, and circumstances. There is no single deletion request or remedy established here for every AI system or impersonation. The FTC’s February 2024 announcement concerned a proposed expansion to cover impersonation of individuals; it was a proposal, not a final rule. The FTC’s Government and Business Impersonation Rule has a narrower described scope. For a specific legal claim, consult the relevant regulator or a qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction.
How widespread are imposter scams?
The FTC reported that people lost $3.5 billion to imposter scams in 2025, and that nearly one in three fraud reports that year concerned imposter scams. Those figures are for imposter scams generally, not AI-generated impersonation or AI agents specifically.
