Before paying for an AI account, subscription, shared login, or access code from a reseller, verify with the provider that the seller and the exact delivery method are authorized. Then check who controls the account, whether access can be transferred, what you will pay and how you can cancel, and who may see your data. A lower price is not worth losing control of your account or exposing your prompts. The safest option is usually to register and pay for your own account directly with the provider.
Verify that the provider authorizes the exact offer
Ask the provider through its official support channel whether the named seller may sell the specific plan and access method being offered. A reseller’s assurance, screenshot, or refund promise does not establish provider authorization. Find the provider’s support and terms pages independently rather than relying only on links from the seller, and keep the answer in writing.
Rules differ by provider, product, and agreement. For example, OpenAI’s consumer Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026, apply to ChatGPT, DALL·E, and its other services for individuals. They prohibit sharing account credentials or making an account available to someone else, as well as modifying, copying, leasing, selling, or distributing the services. OpenAI says users are responsible for activity under their accounts and may suspend or terminate access in specified circumstances, including a terms breach or certain risks. These are OpenAI’s rules; check the applicable provider’s terms rather than assuming the same rules apply to every AI service.
OpenAI’s separate Services Agreement for business services says customers may not resell or lease access to their account or an end-user account; it also says an end-user account is for one end user and prohibits buying, selling, or transferring API keys with a third party. That business agreement is not proof of an official reseller program, nor does it establish the rules for every provider or distribution arrangement.

Check who owns and controls the account
Before purchase, establish whose email address, recovery phone or email, payment method, and credentials are attached to the account—and who can change them. If the seller retains administrator access or recovery control, you may not be able to secure or recover the account independently. Never give a reseller your existing account password, one-time codes, or recovery codes.
Shared credentials also create privacy and security risks. OpenAI’s account-sharing guidance says an account is intended for the individual who created it and advises another person who needs the service to sign up for their own account. It identifies exposure of personal data and payment information as risks of sharing credentials.

Confirm whether access can be transferred
Do not assume a subscription, account, or license can be moved to you after payment. Ask the provider to confirm the supported transfer or migration procedure for the exact product and plan. For ChatGPT, OpenAI’s subscription transfer guidance says a subscription cannot be transferred to a new account. Someone who wants to use a subscription on another account should first cancel the active subscription on the current account. This guidance should not be treated as a rule for every organizational migration or other provider; verify the process that applies to your situation.

- What is the total price, what billing period does it cover, and when does access begin and end?
- Does the subscription renew, on what date, and who will charge you—the provider or reseller?
- Who can stop recurring charges, and what exact cancellation steps apply?
- What are the refund conditions, including any deadline or exclusions, and who handles the request?
- What plan, usage limits, and access method are promised?
For OpenAI consumer subscriptions, the Terms of Use say paid subscriptions renew on the agreed periodic schedule until canceled and payments are generally non-refundable except where required by law. The terms also preserve mandatory local cancellation rights. Review the current terms and consumer protections where you live; do not rely on a seller’s promise of a refund as a guarantee that the provider will issue one.
Consider who can see your information
Read the provider’s current privacy policy and service terms, including how it handles account data and prompts. If another person owns or administers the account, consider that they may have access to information associated with it. Do not submit sensitive personal, financial, work, or confidential material through an account you do not control.

Policies and data practices can change. In February 2024, the FTC published staff commentary saying that quietly applying retroactive changes to data practices—such as newly sharing consumer data or using it for AI training, with notice only through a surreptitious terms or privacy-policy change—may be unfair or deceptive. This is commentary, not a finding that every policy update is unlawful. It is a reason to read the current policy and consider what you are comfortable entering. See the FTC staff commentary.
Assess the seller and preserve the offer
For any account-access offer, check the seller’s identity and independently verifiable reputation, and keep a copy of the advertisement, promised plan and limits, payment receipt, and refund terms. Those records can help clarify what was offered if access fails or a dispute arises, but they do not make the seller’s arrangement authorized by the provider.

If the reseller bundles business coaching, setup services, or earnings claims with the account, the FTC’s consumer checklist for buying a business or coaching opportunity may offer useful questions about the seller, references, lawsuits, cancellation and refund terms, and earnings claims. That checklist concerns business opportunities and coaching; it does not mean every AI account sale is covered by the FTC Business Opportunity Rule. The FTC advises treating contradictions between seller statements and required disclosures as a reason to avoid an offer. Read its consumer alert with that scope in mind.
Use this checklist to compare offers
Compare the whole arrangement, not just the advertised price. If a seller cannot clearly answer a question, treat that as an unresolved risk rather than filling in the gap with an assumption.
- Provider authorization for the named seller and exact access method
- Account owner, administrator, recovery channels, and credential control
- Individual credentials versus a shared login
- Provider-supported transfer or migration method
- Total cost, billing period, renewal date, and payer
- Who handles cancellation, refunds, account recovery, and support
- Privacy terms and who can access account data or prompts
- Seller identity and independently verifiable reputation
A subscription bought directly through the provider’s official site or app generally gives you a clearer path to account ownership and billing control. Check the current terms and regional availability for the plan before subscribing.

- Secure the account. Change the password to a strong, unique one and turn on two-factor authentication. OpenAI recommends these steps after suspected unauthorized access in its account-sharing guidance. A FIDO2 security key may be an additional option only if the provider supports it; two-factor options vary by service.
- Contact the provider directly. Use a known, official support channel to ask about authorization, account status, and recovery. Do not use contact details supplied only by the reseller.
- Check payment activity. If you gave payment details, review the relevant account for unauthorized charges. Contact your bank or card issuer using a known official channel if you see one.
- Keep evidence and ask about remedies. Save the listing, messages, receipts, and terms, then contact the seller and payment provider as appropriate. A refund or account recovery is not guaranteed.
The FTC’s guidance on what to do if you were scammed recommends changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and contacting a known, trusted company for technical help.
