There is no single surface-roughness number that is best for every protective coating. For blast-cleaned steel, use the profile range, grade, cleanliness level and measurement method stated in the coating system’s current technical data sheet (TDS) and the project specification. A profile that is suitable for one product can be wrong for another.
Surface profile is only one part of preparation. Rust, mill scale, soluble salts, dust, oil, grease, moisture and environmental conditions also affect coating performance. Measure and document the specified profile, but do not treat a roughness reading as proof that the steel is ready to paint.
The practical answer: follow the coating system’s specified profile
“Best” means the profile that the complete coating system was designed and approved to use on the prepared substrate. The controlling documents are normally the project specification and the coating manufacturer’s current TDS or application guide. Read them together: the project may set a minimum preparation grade or inspection procedure, while the product document supplies the profile range, application limits and additional cleaning requirements.

Even two application guides from the same manufacturer can specify different profiles. For example, a Jotun application guide dated 10 March 2026 gives a target of 50–100 micrometres (µm), grade Medium to Coarse G under ISO 8503-2 for its specified application. A separate Jotun guide dated 7 April 2026 gives 30–85 µm, grade Fine to Medium G under ISO 8503-2. Those figures illustrate product-specific variation; neither is a universal target.

The required profile must also be achievable with the specified preparation method and suitable for the exposure environment. ISO’s 8501, 8502 and 8503 series provide assessment methods and terminology, while ISO 8504 addresses preparation methods. ISO states that these standards do not themselves select a coating system or prescribe one surface quality for every situation. Those decisions belong in the applicable coating specification, national standard or code of practice.
What surface profile means
Surface profile is the texture left after preparation, especially abrasive blast cleaning. It consists of peaks and valleys that influence how a coating wets the steel and forms mechanical keying. A profile is normally expressed as an average peak-to-valley height in micrometres, together with a comparator grade such as Fine, Medium or Coarse G under ISO 8503-2.
Profile is not the same as general visual roughness. A surface can look uniformly rough yet have a profile outside the product’s permitted range. Conversely, a clean-looking surface can still contain salts or dust that interfere with adhesion and curing. The profile requirement therefore belongs in a broader surface-preparation acceptance decision.
Why one roughness number cannot fit every coating
Coating thickness and formulation
The coating must cover the peaks without leaving the valleys unprotected. A profile that is too deep for a relatively thin film can leave peaks with inadequate coverage, while a profile that is too shallow may provide insufficient keying for a system that depends on a blasted anchor pattern. The product TDS accounts for the intended dry-film thickness and formulation; a generic rule of thumb does not.
Substrate and preparation process
Blast-cleaned carbon steel, stainless steel, previously coated steel and non-metal substrates do not produce the same surface texture or require the same inspection approach. The ISO 8503-5 replica-tape method is described for abrasive-cleaned surfaces. It should not be casually extended to concrete, wood or a surface prepared by a different process.

Exposure and service conditions
The selected surface quality must be compatible with the environment in which the coating will operate and with the cleaning procedure that can actually be achieved. Immersion, atmospheric, marine, chemical and high-temperature services can impose different preparation and coating-system requirements. Use the project documents rather than inferring a target from the service description alone.
How to determine the target before work starts
- Identify the exact coating system. Record the manufacturer, product names, primer/intermediate/topcoat sequence and the document revision or issue date. A generic brand instruction is not enough when several products have similar names.
- Read the current TDS or application guide. Find the sections covering substrate preparation, abrasive type, surface profile, cleanliness, dust, soluble salts, climate and inspection. Note whether the profile is stated as a numerical range, a comparator grade or both.
- Check the project specification. Confirm the required preparation standard, acceptance tolerances, inspection frequency, permitted instruments and reporting format. If the project and product documents conflict, obtain a written technical decision before blasting or painting.
- Confirm the preparation method. Profile targets are tied to the process that creates them. Abrasive selection, nozzle pressure, angle, dwell time and operator technique can change the resulting pattern. The specified procedure must be capable of producing the required range without damaging the steel.
- Set the inspection plan. Define where readings will be taken, how many readings constitute a set, who records them, how instruments are checked and what happens when a result is outside the range. Follow the project specification if it gives a formal sampling plan.

| Document | Profile value | ISO 8503-2 grade | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jotun application guide, issued 10 March 2026 | 50–100 µm | Medium to Coarse G | Applies to the particular application covered by that guide. |
| Jotun application guide, issued 7 April 2026 | 30–85 µm | Fine to Medium G | Applies to a different application guide and is not interchangeable with the first range. |
Use the number and grade exactly as written. Do not average the two examples, select the wider range, or assume that a later publication automatically supersedes the product document for your project. Verify the current document for the exact product and edition being applied.
Measuring blast-cleaned steel profile
Use the method accepted by the project specification. ISO 8503-2 provides visual and tactile assessment with profile comparators. ISO 8503-5 describes replica tape used with a suitable gauge, and a Jotun guide identifies Testex tape to ISO 8503-5 or a stylus instrument to ISO 8503-4 for its specified steel profile. These methods are not interchangeable simply because they produce a number.
| Method | Result | Standard context | Important controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replica tape with a suitable gauge | Numerical average peak-to-valley profile and a physical replica that can be retained | ISO 8503-5; described for abrasive blast-cleaned surfaces | Choose tape grade for the expected range, use a compatible gauge, follow burnishing and reading instructions, and account for technique-specific error. |
| Stylus instrument | Numerical surface-profile reading | ISO 8503-4; named by the cited Jotun guide as an option | Check calibration, probe suitability, surface geometry and the project’s acceptance of the instrument. |
| Profile comparator | Visual and tactile grade comparison | ISO 8503-2 | Use the correct comparator and lighting; record the grade and the specified inspection procedure. |
Replica tape procedure
- Confirm the method is permitted. Check the project specification and coating guide before purchasing tape or taking readings.
- Select the tape grade. The tape must cover the expected profile range. ISO’s public description of ISO 8503-5 states that commercial tape grades permit measurement of average peak-to-valley profiles from 12 to 150 µm. This is the stated scope of that measurement method, not a recommended coating target.
- Prepare the test location. Remove loose abrasive and dust without polishing or altering the blasted surface. Do not take a reading on oil, grease, standing water or an obviously unrepresentative defect.
- Apply and burnish the replica tape. Follow the tape maker’s instructions so the film records the peaks and valleys. Incomplete burnishing, trapped debris or excessive pressure can affect the result.
- Read it with the specified gauge. Use the gauge intended for the tape and expected range. Record the value, location, tape grade, gauge identification and date.
- Compare with the acceptance range. If the reading is outside the product or project limits, stop coating that area and follow the defined rework route. Do not “correct” an out-of-range result by changing the reporting method.
Stylus and comparator checks
A stylus instrument can provide a direct numerical result where the specification permits it. Verify calibration status, inspect the probe for damage and ensure the geometry allows stable contact. A comparator supplies a grade rather than the same kind of numerical reading as replica tape or a stylus. When more than one method is allowed, document which one was used because technique-specific errors can produce somewhat different values.

Understanding measurement uncertainty
Surface-profile measurements are method-dependent. Replica tape, stylus instruments and comparators interact differently with sharp peaks, curved surfaces and irregular blast patterns. ISO notes that measurement techniques may yield somewhat different numerical values. That does not mean one method can be substituted for another without approval.
- Use the instrument and method named by the specification whenever one is mandated.
- Check calibration and record the instrument or gauge identification.
- Use enough readings and locations to represent the prepared area, following the project sampling plan.
- Keep the method, tape grade or probe type, readings, locations and operator in the inspection record.
- Interpret borderline results with the method’s stated error and the coating specification, rather than rounding them into compliance.
Profile is only one part of surface readiness
ISO identifies several conditions that affect coating performance, including rust and mill scale, contaminants such as salts, dust, oil and grease, and the surface profile. A profile reading cannot establish that those conditions have been controlled.
Rust and mill scale
Confirm the specified visual cleanliness grade after preparation. Remaining rust, tightly adherent mill scale or corrosion products can compromise adhesion even when the profile is within range.
Soluble salts
Check for salts when required by the project or coating guide, particularly where contamination or a marine environment is possible. Use the specified test method and limit; do not infer salt cleanliness from a dry-looking surface.
Dust and abrasive residue
Remove loose dust and spent abrasive, then perform the required dust assessment. Dust can form a weak intermediate layer and change the effective profile presented to the coating.

Oil and grease
Degrease before abrasive blasting when the procedure requires it. Blasting contaminated steel can spread or embed contamination rather than remove it.
Climate and timing
Follow the coating guide for steel temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, dew-point margin, ventilation and the maximum interval between preparation and painting. Flash rust or condensation can change the surface after the profile has been accepted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the profile is outside the specified range
Profile too low
Confirm that the reading method, calibration and location are correct. If the result remains below the minimum, re-prepare using the approved abrasive and procedure, then remeasure. Do not rely on extra coating thickness to compensate unless the coating manufacturer and project engineer explicitly approve that solution.
Profile too high
Check for excessive abrasive aggressiveness, pressure, dwell time or repeated blasting. Remove sharp peaks or rework the area using an approved method, then verify that cleanliness and profile still meet the specification. A thick coating may not reliably cover an excessively deep pattern.
Readings vary widely
Look for changes in abrasive condition, nozzle technique, steel geometry or preparation history. Take additional readings according to the inspection plan and ensure all measurements use the same permitted method. If two accepted methods disagree materially, ask the responsible technical authority which result governs rather than combining them.

The surface passed profile inspection but coating adhesion is doubtful
Recheck contamination, dust, salts, rust, mill scale and climate records. Profile acceptance does not override a failed cleanliness or environmental check. Follow the coating system’s failure and repair procedure before applying another coat.
Inspection records that make the result defensible
A useful profile record connects each reading to the coating decision. Include:
- Project, asset, area and steel component identification.
- Coating system and the exact TDS or application-guide revision used.
- Preparation method and abrasive details required by the specification.
- Profile requirement in both numerical and comparator terms when both are specified.
- Measurement method, standard, instrument or gauge identification and calibration status.
- Tape grade or stylus details where applicable.
- Reading locations, individual values, date, time and inspector.
- Associated cleanliness, dust, salt and environmental results.
- Any rework, retest or technical approval for deviations.
Keeping a replica tape can provide a permanent physical record where the method and project procedure call for it. Store it with the corresponding gauge reading and location, not as an unlabelled sample.

When the specification allows a choice, compare methods against the job rather than choosing on convenience alone:
- Specification acceptance: Is the method explicitly permitted for this coating and project?
- Information needed: Do you need a numerical value, a visual/tactile grade or both?
- Surface geometry: Can the method reach curved, narrow or irregular areas?
- Expected range: Does the tape, probe or comparator cover the target without operating at its limit?
- Error and repeatability: What technique-specific errors and calibration checks must be recorded?
- Records: Will the method provide the permanent evidence required by the owner or inspector?
Replica tape with a compatible gauge is a practical category for field verification, but tape grade and gauge must match the expected range and the manufacturer’s instructions. A stylus instrument or ISO profile comparator may be preferable where the specification requires direct readings or comparator grades.
Key takeaways
- The coating system’s current instructions and the project specification determine the target profile.
- Published examples can differ substantially: 50–100 µm Medium to Coarse G and 30–85 µm Fine to Medium G are application-specific instructions, not universal limits.
- Replica tape, stylus instruments and comparators are documented methods for blast-cleaned steel, but their results and procedures are not automatically interchangeable.
- ISO 8503-5’s 12–150 µm statement describes the scope of commercial replica-tape measurement, not the roughness a coating should have.
- Rust, mill scale, salts, dust, oil, grease and environmental conditions must be checked separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a general 50–100 µm target for every steel coating?
No. That range comes from a particular Jotun application guide issued 10 March 2026. Another guide from the same manufacturer specifies 30–85 µm, so the exact product TDS and project specification must control.
Is ISO 8503-5 replica tape suitable for concrete or wood?
The cited ISO 8503-5 method is for field measurement of profiles produced by abrasive blast cleaning before painting steel or applying another protective coating. Do not generalize it to concrete, wood or other preparation methods without a suitable standard and specification.
What should I do if my profile reading is outside the coating specification?
Verify the method, calibration and location, then stop coating the affected area. Re-prepare it using the approved procedure, remeasure with the permitted method and document the retest. Obtain written technical approval before accepting any deviation.
