X is Twitter under a new name and brand identity. It is not a separate social network that replaced Twitter through a migration to a different service. The existing platform was rebranded as X, with a new logo, new terminology, a new corporate identity, and a stated ambition to expand beyond short-form public posts.

The public change began in July 2023. The main web transition happened in stages, with the primary domain migration to X.com reported as completed on May 17, 2024. Many people still say “Twitter” or “tweet,” especially when discussing the platform’s history, but those terms generally refer to the same service now known as X.

What changed when Twitter became X?

The rebrand changed the platform’s name, visual identity, corporate structure, and preferred product language more than it changed the basic social-network experience.

When did Twitter become X?

The transition began publicly in July 2023. Elon Musk announced that the Twitter name and bird imagery would be retired, and the company began replacing the blue bird with an X across its website, accounts, offices, and mobile applications.

X’s official company timeline identifies July 24, 2023 as the date X was introduced to the world. The rollout was rapid rather than a conventional, months-long rebranding campaign. The main account moved from the historical @Twitter identity to @X, and the Android and iOS apps began adopting the X name and logo at slightly different times.

The web-domain change took longer. At the beginning of the rebrand, visiting X.com redirected people to Twitter.com. The company later moved its core systems and primary web experience to X.com. A 2025 USPTO filing summarizing the rebrand states that the primary domain officially redirected from Twitter.com to X.com on May 17, 2024, describing that event as the completion of the main domain migration.

That staged transition explains why older links, embedded posts, developer documentation, screenshots, and news articles may still use Twitter.com or Twitter-era vocabulary. They generally refer to the platform’s former name, not to a separate active service.

Why did Twitter change its name to X?

The rebrand reflects Elon Musk’s broader plan to turn the former Twitter into what he has called an “everything app.” In that vision, the social platform would become a wider digital service combining public conversation with functions such as:

  • Short-form public posts and discussion
  • Direct messaging
  • Long-form writing
  • Video and live content
  • Creator subscriptions and other creator tools
  • Advertising services
  • Financial services
  • Payments or other transactions

The important distinction is that an “everything app” describes a strategic ambition, not proof that every proposed service launched at the time of the name change—or that every feature is available in every country today. The name X provided a broader identity than Twitter, whose brand was strongly associated with short written messages.

Musk also had a longstanding connection to the letter X. He previously co-founded the online financial company X.com, later reacquired the X.com domain, and used X-related names for other ventures. That history helps explain the choice of letter, but the rebrand was presented as more than a logo update: it was intended to signal a broader direction for the platform.

Is X the same thing as Twitter?

For ordinary users, yes: X is the renamed Twitter platform. The social graph, user accounts, posts, followers, and much of the core functionality continued through the rebrand. The change did not create a new social network that required users to start over on a separate service.

There are three meanings of “X” worth separating:

  1. X the platform: The social-media service accessed through X.com and its mobile applications.
  2. X Corp.: The private operating company associated with the platform after Twitter, Inc. was merged into X Corp. in 2023.
  3. X as a product vision: Musk’s proposed expansion of the social network into a broader communications, media, and financial-services ecosystem.

In a conversation about posting, following, or messaging, “X” normally means the app or website. In legal, corporate, or financial reporting, “X Corp.” may refer to the company. The corporate name should not be treated as a synonym for every user-facing feature.

What happened to tweets, retweets, and Twitter Blue?

The company increasingly replaced Twitter-specific vocabulary with X terminology:

  • A tweet became a post.
  • A retweet became, or was supplemented by, a repost.
  • Twitter Blue was presented as X Premium or Premium.
  • The blue bird was replaced by an X logo.

The underlying actions remained familiar. A user could still publish a message containing text, images, video, or links; reply to another post; share content with followers; and communicate privately through direct messages.

For current writing, post is the clearest term. Use tweet when discussing the historical Twitter era, describing older product language, or quoting someone who used the word.

Did the rebrand create an everything app?

No—not by itself. A rebrand can establish a new name and strategic direction, but it does not demonstrate that every planned service has launched, reached scale, or become available to all users.

X’s documented platform capabilities include posts, messaging, video, creator functions, advertising-related tools, Premium features, and Communities. The proposed expansion into payments and a broad collection of financial or everyday services should be described more cautiously unless a specific capability has been independently verified for a particular date and geography.

The most accurate summary is:

Twitter was renamed X as a major public step toward an “everything app,” but the rebrand and the completed everything-app vision are not the same thing.

Why was the Twitter-to-X rebrand controversial?

Twitter had unusually strong brand recognition. Its blue bird, name, and vocabulary were familiar to users, journalists, businesses, and even people who did not use the service. Words such as “tweet” and “retweet” had become closely associated with online conversation.

Replacing that established identity created several concerns:

  • Loss of familiarity: People had to learn whether “X” referred to a new product, a company, or the old Twitter service.
  • Discoverability problems: The single letter X is used widely in technology and commerce, making it less distinctive as a search term than “Twitter.”
  • Trademark complexity: A commonly used letter can create potential trademark and brand-confusion issues.
  • Interrupted continuity: Changing the name, logo, account handles, app identity, signage, and terminology in a short period made the transition especially visible.
  • Unclear expectations: The “everything app” language suggested a much broader future than the platform’s existing social-media functions alone.

It is possible to reach a balanced conclusion without treating the name change as proof of either success or failure. The rebrand clearly communicated Musk’s long-term X strategy, but it also discarded or weakened an established consumer brand. Claims about the rebrand’s commercial success, failure, usage effects, advertising impact, or brand value require separate evidence; they cannot be proved by the name change alone.

How should writers refer to X?

For clarity, use this terminology:

  • First reference: “X, formerly known as Twitter.”
  • Definition: Explain that X is the renamed Twitter platform, not a wholly separate successor service.
  • Current product term: Use “post” for a message published on X.
  • Historical term: Use “tweet” when discussing the Twitter era or quoting older sources.
  • Corporate reference: Use “X Corp.” when discussing the legal or operating company.
  • Strategic language: Describe “everything app” as Musk’s stated ambition unless discussing a separately verified product launch.
  • Dates: Mention July 2023 for the public rebrand and May 17, 2024 for the reported completion of the primary domain migration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is X a new social-media app?

No. X is the renamed Twitter platform. The service continued with existing accounts, followers, posts, messages, and much of the same core functionality during and after the rebrand.

When did Twitter officially become X?

The public rebrand began in July 2023, and X’s company timeline identifies July 24, 2023, as the date X was introduced. The primary web-domain migration to X.com was reported as completed on May 17, 2024.

What is the difference between X and X Corp.?

X usually means the user-facing platform and its apps. X Corp. refers to the private corporate entity associated with the platform after Twitter, Inc. was merged into it in 2023.

Should I say tweet or post?

Use “post” for current X terminology. “Tweet” remains appropriate when discussing Twitter’s history, older product language, or a quotation.

Does X already provide every feature of an everything app?

Not necessarily. “Everything app” describes Musk’s broader strategic ambition. X has documented social, messaging, video, creator, advertising, and related tools, but the name change alone does not show that every proposed payment or financial-service feature has launched or is available everywhere.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: X is Twitter after a corporate, visual, and product-language rebrand. The change began in July 2023 and culminated in the primary web experience moving to X.com in May 2024. Musk’s goal is to use the existing social platform as the foundation for a broader “everything app,” but that strategic vision should not be confused with proof that the complete ecosystem has been delivered.
