Valve’s Lepton is a compatibility layer designed to run Android games on Linux. On Steam Frame, it provides an Android-game path alongside the separate Windows-game route built around Proton and FEX. The comparison with Proton is about their shared purpose—making games from another platform usable on Linux—not about targeting the same apps.
What is Valve’s Lepton?
Valve describes Lepton as a compatibility layer that allows Android games to run on Linux. It is implemented as a container intended to minimize overhead. The documented target is Steam Frame, Valve’s VR headset, which runs SteamOS on Arm64 hardware.
That description identifies Lepton’s role, not a promise that every Android app or game will work. Valve’s compatibility documentation explains the intended architecture but does not provide a title-by-title compatibility database.
How Lepton fits into Steam Frame
Steam Frame combines SteamOS, based on Arch Linux, with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip. Valve describes distinct compatibility routes for software built for different platforms: Lepton for Android games, and Proton with FEX for Windows x86 games.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Android games: Lepton
An Android game can use Lepton to run on Linux. Valve’s GDC 2026 presentation depicts the path as Android app → Lepton → SteamOS on Arm.
Windows games: Proton and FEX
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. Valve says it uses a modified version of Wine and graphics implementations such as DXVK, which translates DirectX to Vulkan. On Steam Frame’s Arm hardware, FEX translates x86 code to Arm64 and forwards graphics API calls to native host libraries such as OpenGL or Vulkan. Valve depicts this route as Windows x86 app → Proton/FEX → SteamOS on Arm.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
These are separate paths for separate source platforms, rather than one universal mechanism. Valve’s descriptions do not establish comparative performance or compatibility rates for either route.
Lepton vs. Proton: what is different?
| Comparison | Android route | Windows route |
|---|---|---|
| Existing game build | Android app, typically Arm64 in Valve’s VR developer example | Windows x86 app |
| Compatibility layer(s) | Lepton | Proton with FEX on Steam Frame’s Arm hardware |
| Valve’s stated fit | May suit a VR developer who already has a mobile-optimized Android version | Valve says most developers will likely use this route |
Valve presents both as ways to bring games from another platform to Linux, but they address different builds. Lepton is not a version of Proton for Android; it is the Android-specific route.

Why would a VR developer use an Android build?
Valve’s guidance is aimed at developers choosing how to bring a game to Steam Frame. Most developers will likely use a Windows x86 build through Proton and FEX, according to Valve. An Android version may make more sense for a VR developer who has already invested in a mobile-optimized build, typically Android Arm64. Valve’s GDC slides frame Lepton as an alternate compatibility path for VR games.
This is guidance about developer fit, not evidence that Android builds are more compatible or faster. Valve’s materials do not publish comparative benchmarks, adoption figures, game counts, or compatibility rates for the two routes.

What is not yet established about Android game support?
Valve’s documentation describes Lepton’s intended architecture, but does not identify which individual Android games work or whether games that rely on particular Android services are supported. It also does not compare Lepton’s performance with native Android or other compatibility methods. Without title-level compatibility information or benchmark evidence, claims about specific games or relative speed remain unverified.
