Shopify Canvas is a visual workspace for creating and editing online-store themes with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent. Merchants can describe a design change in chat, then refine the result by editing page elements themselves. Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026, and said it would roll out over the following days.

What is Shopify Canvas?

Canvas is a Shopify-native design workspace for an online store’s theme. Shopify describes it as a place where merchants can build with Sidekick: give the AI a description of a store or a requested change, then work with the generated design visually.

It is intended to make theme creation more accessible to entrepreneurs without design experience or coding skills. That is Shopify’s product positioning, not a guarantee that every store can be completed without technical work.

How do you use Canvas to build or edit a Shopify theme?

  1. Open the Themes page. In Shopify Admin, go to Themes to access Canvas.
  2. Describe the result or change you want. Ask Sidekick to build a theme from a description or to modify an existing one.
  3. Review and refine the page. Move between pages, zoom into details, and use direct editing to adjust blocks, settings, text, and other page elements.

The workflow combines chat with hands-on visual control; it is not limited to accepting or rejecting an AI-generated design. Shopify Help Center documentation describes Canvas as a way to create or edit an online-store theme.

Can Canvas preview mobile and desktop layouts?

According to TechCrunch’s October 1, 2026 report, Canvas renders the real code behind the store rather than showing only a static mockup. The report says merchants can inspect pages at different screen sizes and test interactivity and animation. That makes responsive and interactive review part of the described workflow, though it does not establish that every possible device, browser, or app interaction is covered.

Does Shopify Canvas replace the theme editor?

Shopify’s announcement and Help Center description present Canvas as a way to create or edit themes, with both Sidekick prompts and direct editing. They do not establish that Canvas replaces Shopify’s existing theme editor, or specify how the two tools compare across all theme-editing functions.

Area What is established about Canvas What is established about the conventional theme editor
How changes are made Merchants can ask Sidekick for changes and edit elements directly. Not stated in Shopify’s Canvas announcement or Help Center description summarized here.
Preview TechCrunch reported real-code rendering, with inspection of interactivity, animation, and different screen sizes. Not stated in the cited Canvas coverage.
Replacement status Presented as a new workspace for creating or editing themes. Whether Canvas replaces or complements the existing editor is not established.

Do you need coding skills to use Shopify Canvas?

Shopify is positioning Canvas for entrepreneurs regardless of coding or design experience, and the described workflow lets users make requests in natural language. Direct controls for blocks, settings, and text also give merchants ways to refine a result themselves. The announcement does not promise that coding will never be needed, especially for requirements beyond the described theme-building and editing workflow.

When is Canvas available, and what is known about eligibility?

Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026, saying it was rolling out over the coming days. That announcement does not establish whether the rollout is complete for every merchant as of October 3, 2026. The available announcement and Help Center details also do not establish plan eligibility, pricing, geographic availability, or compatibility with themes and app extensions. Check Shopify Admin or current Shopify documentation for account-specific availability and updated terms.

What Shopify says about build time

Ben Sehl, Shopify’s director of product and Kotn co-founder, said that when he built Kotn 12 years earlier, it took him two weeks to get a rough store working, while an entrepreneur using Shopify today could build a fully custom store in twenty minutes. This is Sehl’s comparison, not an independently measured benchmark for Canvas or a time guarantee for merchants.
