Microsoft PowerToys is a free, open-source suite of Windows utilities that adds optional tools for window layouts, keyboard shortcuts, file handling, launching apps, and other common tasks. Is PowerToys free, and how do you install it?
PowerToys is free software and is distributed digitally. Microsoft documents installation through GitHub releases, Microsoft Store, WinGet, Chocolatey, and Scoop, and recommends GitHub or Microsoft Store in its installation documentation. The installer’s bootstrapper installs the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
- Check compatibility: confirm that the PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or newer, with an x64 or ARM64 processor.
- Choose an installation route: use Microsoft Store or the official GitHub releases page, or a documented package manager such as WinGet.
- Choose installer scope if prompted: per-user and machine-wide installers have different scopes; select the one appropriate for who should use the installation.
- After installation, review PowerToys Settings: check the installed version and enable only the utilities you want.
The cited installation guidance establishes the minimum Windows and processor requirements, not support for every Windows 10 release. It also does not provide a version number that should be treated as current indefinitely; check PowerToys Settings or the official PowerToys releases for the version available when you install.

Does PowerToys collect diagnostic data?
Yes. The PowerToys project summary says the application logs basic diagnostic data. Microsoft’s General settings documentation says users can enable or disable collection of diagnostic data and generate a bug-report package. To review the setting, open PowerToys Settings and select General.
The surfaced documentation does not enumerate the exact data fields, so it does not support a claim that PowerToys collects no personal data or that every operation is processed locally. Does PowerToys slow down your PC?
There is no universal CPU, memory, battery, or startup penalty established by the cited Microsoft documentation. PowerToys can start when you sign in, and its utilities can be switched on or off. Its effect on a particular PC therefore depends on the selected utilities, their settings, Windows configuration, and workload; a single utility’s behavior would not establish the impact of the whole suite.
If you are concerned about background activity, disable tools you do not use and observe your PC’s behavior with your usual workload. That gives you a practical, device-specific comparison without assuming a performance figure that Microsoft has not published.

Is PowerToys safe to use?
Microsoft distributes the project through its official channels and recommends the Stable update channel for tested, generally available releases. That is a sensible default for most users, but the choice of channel and whether to grant elevated privileges still matter.
Choose Stable or Insider updates
Microsoft describes Stable as the recommended channel. Insider builds are nightly prereleases published through GitHub and receive less validation; they may contain incomplete changes or regressions. Use administrator mode only when needed
Some interactions with elevated apps may fail unless PowerToys also runs with administrator privileges. Microsoft notes that keyboard interception and moving or resizing windows can be affected, including some Always On Top and FancyZones cases. Its guidance is to restart PowerToys as administrator when an elevated app requires it, rather than always running PowerToys elevated. Know about a documented compatibility issue
Microsoft names TaskbarX as an application that can interfere with PowerToys until it is manually closed and restarted; it can also prevent the PowerToys tray icon from appearing. This is a documented compatibility case, not an indication that every TaskbarX user will encounter it. Microsoft lists it in the General settings documentation.
Who should install PowerToys?
PowerToys is most useful when you can name a Windows task you want to improve—for example, arranging windows into repeatable layouts, remapping a key, batch-renaming files, or extracting text from the screen. Before installing, consider whether your PC meets the requirements, whether you want diagnostic-data collection enabled, which update channel suits your tolerance for prerelease changes, and whether your workflow involves elevated applications. If none of its utilities addresses a need you have, there is no reason to enable tools just because they are included.
