Cellebrite is a professional digital-forensics platform that can lawfully collect and analyze data from supported phones, computers, apps, and cloud sources. What Is Cellebrite, and What Kind of Data Can It Recover? The answer depends on the exact device, operating-system version, lock state, extraction method, app, encryption, physical condition, legal authority, and available credentials or tokens.

Cellebrite is not a consumer photo-recovery app and it is not a universal “undelete” button. The company’s tools may acquire messages, call records, photos, files, app databases, browser artifacts, location records, and some deleted or protected data—but a successful extraction can still be partial, and cloud-only or securely discarded data may remain unavailable.

Key takeaways

  • Cellebrite is a family of professional forensic-acquisition, analysis, cloud, computer-forensics, and evidence-management products rather than one single phone-unlocking tool.
  • Cellebrite may recover messages, calls, contacts, media, documents, app data, browser artifacts, location records, and some deleted content from supported devices.
  • Logical, filesystem, full-file-system, physical, and cloud extraction methods produce different results; “full-file-system” does not mean every deleted byte or cloud record will be recovered.
  • A phone’s AFU or BFU state, operating-system build, security patch, encryption, app version, and license-specific support can materially change the result.
  • Cellebrite products are sold through professional, quote-based channels, and using them requires lawful authority, forensic procedures, and appropriate data-governance controls.

What is Cellebrite?

Cellebrite is a commercial digital-intelligence and digital-forensics company whose products are designed to lawfully collect, decode, analyze, and report information from smartphones, computers, applications, cloud services, and other digital devices. The company’s current product positioning centers on Cellebrite Inseyets, which brings together advanced extraction capabilities formerly associated with Premium and UFED, Physical Analyzer, and related workflow tools.

The word “Cellebrite” is often used imprecisely. Someone may be referring to UFED mobile extraction, an advanced-access capability for a locked phone, Physical Analyzer software, Inspector computer-forensics software, cloud-collection tools, or Guardian evidence management. Those products perform different jobs.

What kind of data can Cellebrite recover from a phone?

Cellebrite can potentially recover many categories of mobile evidence, but each category is conditional. The result depends on what was stored locally, what the extraction method could access, whether the relevant app or operating-system version is supported, and whether the data was deleted, encrypted, overwritten, synchronized, or held only in the cloud.

Data category Examples Important qualification
Messages and communications SMS, MMS, supported chat conversations, message timestamps, participants, attachments, and database identifiers An extraction may contain metadata, remnants, or some messages without containing every message, attachment, or disappearing message.
Calls and contacts Call history, contacts, contact groups, voicemail artifacts, and related timestamps Call metadata is not the same as a recording of the call; voicemail availability depends on storage and acquisition.
Photos, videos, and audio Camera media, screenshots, shared media, voice recordings, thumbnails, previews, and metadata A thumbnail or filename does not prove that the original full-resolution file was recovered.
Documents and downloads PDFs, office files, downloaded files, email attachments, and app-shared documents Files may be locally stored, partially present, cached, or represented only by metadata.
Location data GPS records, maps, navigation history, location-tagged photos, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth history, and app location databases Location artifacts usually do not form a complete, continuous GPS trail.
Web activity Browser history, searches, bookmarks, cookies, cached pages, downloads, autofill artifacts, and in-app webview data Private browsing can leave indirect artifacts, but the original browsing record is not guaranteed to remain.
App data Profiles, local databases, chats, social activity, shopping, delivery, finance, fitness, health, and notification traces App version, encryption, parser support, permissions, and local-versus-cloud storage all matter.
Deleted artifacts Database remnants, deleted rows, cached copies, thumbnails, indexes, logs, backups, and synced-device traces Deleted content may have been overwritten, trimmed, cryptographically discarded, or synchronized as deleted.
Account artifacts Account names, email addresses, authentication tokens, session information, and credential-related records Account evidence and tokens do not necessarily reveal plaintext passwords or the complete online account.

Can Cellebrite recover messages, calls, and contacts?

Cellebrite may recover SMS, MMS, call history, contacts, voicemail artifacts, email, downloaded attachments, and conversations from supported third-party applications. The extraction may also reveal participants, timestamps, attachment references, database identifiers, notifications, or cached content.

Application support is not an all-or-nothing promise. A phone may contain a message database but not every message stored by the service. A disappearing-message app may leave metadata or notifications while the original plaintext is gone. An app may store attachments separately, protect its container with another encryption layer, or keep the authoritative copy on a server rather than on the phone.

Can Cellebrite recover photos, videos, audio, and documents?

Cellebrite may acquire camera photos, videos, screenshots, voice recordings, downloaded files, documents, PDFs, shared media, thumbnails, previews, and file metadata from supported devices. Metadata can include timestamps or location information when that metadata still exists.

Recovery quality matters. A complete original file, a thumbnail, a cache, a database entry, and a filename are different artifacts with different evidentiary value. A forensic report should identify which one was found instead of treating every reference as proof that the original file was recovered.

What location and browser data can Cellebrite find?

Cellebrite may find location artifacts in GPS records, navigation and map databases, location-tagged photographs, app records, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth histories, messages, searches, and social applications. The result is an evidence set assembled from available records, not necessarily a continuous record of everywhere a person traveled.

Browser artifacts can include history, searches, bookmarks, cookies, cached pages, downloads, autofill information, and activity from application webviews. The existence and precision of those artifacts depend on browser settings, app design, retention, synchronization, and the extraction depth.

How does Cellebrite extract data?

Cellebrite describes several distinct collection methods. A deeper method can expose more artifacts, but “deeper” does not guarantee that every deleted file, encryption key, application record, or cloud dataset will be available.

Extraction method What it generally collects Typical limitations
Logical extraction Data exposed through normal operating-system, synchronization, backup, or structured-export interfaces May omit protected areas, deleted content, app containers, and low-level filesystem artifacts.
Filesystem extraction A broader representation of filesystem and application data than an ordinary backup Still depends on access to encryption keys, device protections, operating-system behavior, and supported workflows.
Full-file-system extraction A broader accessible view of the device filesystem, including some protected or containerized areas where supported “Full” describes filesystem scope, not guaranteed recovery of every physical block, deleted file, or cloud record.
Physical extraction A low-level image or equivalent representation of device storage where the architecture and method permit it Usefulness varies with the chipset, encryption, security state, device condition, and supported capability.
Cloud extraction Data held by an online service and not necessarily present on the handset May require lawful process, provider cooperation, network access, valid credentials, or a device-derived token.

Cellebrite’s UFED materials distinguish logical, filesystem, full-file-system, and physical collection across supported mobile and other devices. The exact method available is determined by the device, operating-system build, security state, product configuration, and current support.

Can Cellebrite unlock a locked phone?

Cellebrite can sometimes access or unlock a locked phone, but only on certain supported devices and configurations. Cellebrite does not provide a defensible basis for saying that the product can unlock every current iPhone or Android phone.

Access depends on the exact model, chipset, operating-system version, security patch, passcode or pattern, device condition, license, and available extraction workflow. Cellebrite’s advanced-access materials describe support for particular iOS and Android devices and refer to AFU and BFU security states.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do AFU and BFU mean?

AFU, or After First Unlock, means the phone has been unlocked at least once since its most recent restart. Some encryption keys and application data may remain available in that state.

BFU, or Before First Unlock, means the phone has restarted but the user has not yet entered the passcode. The operating system normally keeps more data inaccessible in BFU than in AFU.

A reboot can therefore change the forensic result. Two identical phones can produce different extractions if one phone was unlocked after boot and the other was not. AFU and BFU are general security-state explanations, not guarantees of a particular result on a particular device.

Does Cellebrite decrypt encrypted phones?

Cellebrite states that its products can access certain protected or encrypted data on supported devices and security states. That capability may depend on obtaining usable keys while the phone is in a favorable state; it does not mean that every encrypted phone can be decrypted completely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several barriers can exist at once: the device passcode, a secure enclave or trusted execution environment, file-based or full-disk encryption, USB restrictions, an app-level lock, end-to-end encryption, and a cloud provider’s separate authentication requirements. A locked device may produce partial data, metadata, or no useful content depending on the circumstances.

Can Cellebrite recover deleted messages and photos?

Cellebrite may recover deleted database rows, message remnants, deleted files, thumbnails, cached copies, indexes, logs, backups, or synchronized-device traces. Cellebrite cannot guarantee recovery of every deleted message or photo because modern smartphones combine encryption, flash-storage management, application databases, and cloud synchronization.

Deletion can have several different technical results:

  • An app can remove a database row while leaving remnants in an unused database area.
  • A file can disappear from the user interface while a thumbnail, cache, filename, or index remains.
  • Flash-storage cleanup, trimming, and garbage collection can make the original file blocks unrecoverable.
  • Encryption can make deleted content inaccessible when the relevant key is discarded or no longer available.
  • A cloud service can synchronize the deletion, removing the server-side copy available through the account.
  • A backup or another synced device can preserve a copy even when the seized phone does not.

A newer or deeper extraction can sometimes expose more artifacts than a logical backup, but no forensic tool can promise complete recovery. Cellebrite’s product pages advertise deleted-content recovery and protected-data access, while its public materials do not establish a universal recovery rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cellebrite also uses claims such as “up to 60% more data” and “5x more devices” in product marketing. Those figures are Cellebrite’s vendor claims based on internal customer comparisons, not independent laboratory benchmarks, so they should not be treated as a guaranteed result for an individual phone.

What happens when apps use encryption or disappearing messages?

End-to-end encryption does not automatically make a message either recoverable or unrecoverable from a phone. The practical question is whether plaintext, usable keys, notifications, cached media, database remnants, or account tokens existed on an accessible endpoint.

A forensic examination may find:

  • Message metadata, such as participants, timestamps, conversation identifiers, and attachment references.
  • Notifications or notification history.
  • Cached media or previews.
  • Local database remnants.
  • Contacts, account identifiers, and conversation references.
  • Cloud-access artifacts that may support a separately authorized collection.

The original message content may still be absent. App support changes with app versions, operating-system versions, encryption design, device state, and parser capability, so a fixed list promising recovery from every popular messaging app would be misleading.

Can Cellebrite recover cloud-only data?

A phone extraction does not automatically contain the full contents of a person’s online accounts. Cellebrite’s cloud tools may acquire data using device-derived authentication tokens or known credentials, but cloud collection is a separate process that can require lawful authority, provider cooperation, network access, and a supported service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cellebrite’s Inseyets FAQ distinguishes cloud extraction from data physically stored on the device and describes the use of device-based tokens or known credentials. A phone may therefore reveal an account identifier or token without containing the account’s complete server-side history.

Cloud data can include synchronized messages, photographs, documents, email, attachments, backups, account records, or other service-specific information. The available result depends on what the provider retains, what legal process permits, what credentials or tokens remain valid, and whether the service returns the requested data.

Can Cellebrite examine computers as well as phones?

Yes. Cellebrite Inspector is aimed at Windows and Mac computer forensics rather than primarily at mobile-phone extraction. Cellebrite Inspector’s product materials describe analysis of internet history, downloads, recent searches, locations, user activity, Windows Registry data, Jump Lists, Timeline, Shellbags, SRUM, Volume Shadow Copies, BitLocker- and VeraCrypt-related evidence, macOS APFS snapshots, Time Machine backups, Spotlight metadata, KnowledgeC data, network connections, recent documents, and user activity.

Computer acquisition and computer-artifact analysis should not be confused with UFED phone extraction. They use different evidence sources and may require different tools, permissions, storage, and examiner expertise.

What can cause a Cellebrite extraction to fail or be incomplete?

An incomplete extraction is a normal possibility, not necessarily proof that the examiner performed the work incorrectly. Common failure conditions include:

Situation Why the result may be limited What may still exist
The phone was restarted The device moved from AFU to the more restrictive BFU state before the user entered the passcode. Some accessible metadata or limited device content, depending on model and method.
The phone is physically damaged Board, storage, power, display, or communication faults can prevent stable acquisition. Backups, cloud records, removable media, or specialist laboratory recovery may provide other sources.
Data was deleted long ago Storage blocks may have been reused; flash cleanup or encryption-key disposal may remove the original content. Thumbnails, indexes, logs, notifications, database remnants, or backup copies.
An app uses disappearing messages The app may remove plaintext and attachments rather than retaining them locally. Metadata, notifications, cached content, or conversation references.
The data is cloud-only The handset contains only a cache, account identifier, or token, not the provider’s full dataset. Separately collected cloud records when lawful access and valid credentials, tokens, or provider returns exist.
The device is powered off and encrypted Keys and protected data may be unavailable until the device reaches an accessible security state. Results vary substantially by model, operating system, security patch, and licensed capability.
The app or database is unsupported The raw database may be collected but not completely parsed or decoded. Raw files, partial records, or artifacts requiring manual forensic validation.

Reports can also contain corrupt files, unsupported or undecoded databases, missing media, duplicate records, timestamp conflicts, parser errors, and artifacts that require manual review. A responsible examiner should document exclusions and avoid presenting a partial dataset as a complete history.

How reliable is Cellebrite evidence?

Cellebrite can provide valuable forensic evidence, but a Cellebrite report is not automatically complete, self-authenticating, or admissible in court. Reliability depends on the legal authority, collection method, device handling, chain of custody, tool and parser validation, examiner qualifications, underlying artifacts, and interpretation.

Extraction and analysis are separate stages. Acquiring a filesystem image does not by itself prove what a person did. Analysis may involve parsing application databases, correlating records, constructing timelines, deduplicating data, identifying time-zone effects, and distinguishing user actions from automatic system activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A defensible workflow should record:

  • What device, SIM, memory card, computer, or account was examined.
  • The device condition and security state at collection.
  • Whether the method was logical, filesystem, full-file-system, physical, or cloud-based.
  • The software version, license capability, extraction configuration, and any failed attempts.
  • Hashes, evidence identifiers, timestamps, chain-of-custody transfers, and storage locations.
  • Unsupported applications, missing files, parser limitations, corrupt data, and other exclusions.
  • How the examiner validated important findings against the underlying records or another source.

Cellebrite’s own public materials state that forensic reports from Cellebrite or other vendors should not be relied upon as evidence by themselves. Courts and investigators still evaluate authorization, method, custody, validation, completeness, and expert interpretation.

Is using Cellebrite legal?

Using Cellebrite to access another person’s phone without authorization can be unlawful. Cellebrite’s products are marketed for authorized forensic use, and the customer is responsible for obtaining the permissions, warrants, consents, or other legal authority required for collection and processing.

Depending on the jurisdiction and circumstances, authorization may involve a search warrant, court order, device-owner consent, corporate approval for an employer-owned device, legal-hold or eDiscovery authority, or another statutory basis. Ownership of a phone does not automatically authorize access to every account or every person’s data contained on it.

Cellebrite’s legal terms place responsibility on customers to possess the device and data lawfully and to obtain the necessary permissions. Legal standards vary by country, state, investigation type, employment relationship, and the scope of the authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does privacy matter during a forensic extraction?

A successful extraction can expose far more information than the original investigative question requires. The dataset may include private conversations with uninvolved people, health and financial information, photographs, location history, passwords or account artifacts, and data belonging to family members, coworkers, clients, or bystanders.

Organizations should use data minimization, role-based access, audit logs, encryption, retention limits, disclosure controls, and documented chain-of-custody procedures. Cellebrite describes security, audit, access-control, and evidence-management features across parts of its platform, but the customer remains responsible for configuring and governing the investigation appropriately. Cellebrite Guardian is presented as a cloud-based platform for storing, reviewing, sharing, and managing digital evidence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How much does Cellebrite cost?

Cellebrite does not generally publish a simple consumer price for phone recovery. Current product materials use contact-sales and quote-based purchasing, with package differences involving extraction capabilities, endpoints, hardware, support, deployment, and unlock allowances.

The publicly visible Inseyets tiers document lists unlock packages of 15, 40, 65, 100, 150, and 265 for specified online tiers, but the document does not provide a universal dollar price. The tiers and allowances should not be interpreted as a price list for every customer or product configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Guardian product materials state that storage packages start at 5 TB uploaded, with additional long-term storage available. The 5 TB figure is a storage-plan signal, not a complete public price. A serious buyer should request a written quote that separates software, hardware, extraction or unlock allowances, cloud storage, training, support, renewals, data residency, and any usage limits.

Cellebrite is therefore a poor fit for a consumer who wants to recover personal photos or one damaged phone. A normal backup, cloud restore, professional data-recovery laboratory, or repair specialist may be more appropriate depending on the problem and the user’s authority over the data.

What are the main alternatives to Cellebrite?

MSAB XRY is a credible mobile-forensics alternative, but neither Cellebrite nor XRY is a universal winner. Selection should be based on the organization’s exact device mix, operating-system versions, app requirements, licensing model, training, validation record, cloud needs, and evidence workflow.

Option What the research verifies Best comparison question
Cellebrite Inseyets and UFED Integrated mobile extraction, advanced access, analysis, workflow, and related capabilities depending on tier Does the quoted tier support the exact devices, states, apps, and extraction depths required?
Cellebrite Inspector Windows and macOS computer-forensics analysis Does the team need computer artifacts in addition to mobile acquisition?
MSAB XRY Official product materials describe logical, physical, protected/deleted-data workflows on supported devices and device-derived app tokens for cloud recovery Does XRY’s validated device and app coverage fit the case mix and licensing requirements?
Magnet Forensics, GrayKey, or Oxygen Forensics The research pass did not verify current official buying, feature, or price details for a complete comparison Obtain current vendor documentation and independent validation for the exact device and OS combinations.

MSAB’s official XRY page describes logical and physical mobile extraction, access to protected or deleted data on supported devices, and cloud-related token collection. Cellebrite Guardian also states that it can review GrayKey files, but that fact alone does not establish GrayKey’s current extraction capabilities, pricing, or availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a buyer ask before choosing a forensic platform?

A buyer should demand device-specific and workflow-specific answers rather than relying on broad claims such as “supports iPhone” or “recovers deleted data.” The following checklist is more useful than a generic feature list:

  1. Device coverage: Does the product support the exact phone model, chipset, iOS or Android build, security patch, and AFU/BFU state?
  2. Extraction depth: Is the quoted workflow logical, filesystem, full-file-system, physical, cloud, or a combination?
  3. App coverage: Does the parser support the exact app version, message format, attachments, disappearing-message behavior, and app-level encryption?
  4. Failure handling: What happens if the phone is damaged, powered off, locked, restarted, or partially unreadable?
  5. Validation: Are hashes, audit logs, chain-of-custody records, repeatability information, and parser-validation documentation available?
  6. Deployment: Is the system offline, on-premises, cloud-based, or hybrid, and where will evidence be stored?
  7. Commercial limits: How many endpoints, extractions, unlocks, cases, users, and storage terabytes are included?
  8. Training and support: What examiner training, updates, technical support, and renewal terms are included?
  9. Privacy and governance: Can the organization enforce least-privilege access, retention limits, audit review, and data-residency requirements?

What Cellebrite cannot guarantee

Cellebrite can be extremely capable, but the following claims are too broad to be reliable:

  • It cannot guarantee that every phone can be unlocked.
  • It cannot guarantee that every deleted message, photograph, or file can be restored.
  • It cannot guarantee that a full-file-system extraction contains every physical storage block.
  • It cannot guarantee access to every cloud account or server-side record.
  • It cannot guarantee recovery of plaintext from every encrypted or disappearing-message application.
  • It cannot guarantee that every recovered artifact is correctly interpreted without examiner review.
  • It cannot make evidence admissible without proper authority, handling, validation, and jurisdiction-specific legal analysis.

The accurate question is not “Can Cellebrite recover everything?” The accurate question is: What extraction method is available for this exact device, operating-system version, security state, application, and legal authority, and what data remains after that method is applied?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Cellebrite recover data from a phone that was never unlocked after being restarted?

A phone that has not been unlocked after a restart is in the more restrictive BFU state, so the available data may be substantially less than when the phone is in AFU state. The result still varies by device model, operating-system build, security patch, licensed capability, and extraction method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Cellebrite recover the original file when it finds a deleted photo or message?

Not necessarily. Cellebrite may find a complete file, a database remnant, thumbnail, cache, index, notification, or filename. Those artifacts are not equivalent, and the original content may have been overwritten, trimmed, or cryptographically discarded.

Can a Cellebrite phone extraction include cloud-account data?

A phone extraction does not automatically include the full contents of a cloud account. Separate cloud collection may use a device-derived token or known credentials and may require lawful authority, provider cooperation, network access, and a supported service.

Is Cellebrite evidence automatically admissible in court?

No. Admissibility depends on legal authority, scope, chain of custody, tool and parser validation, examiner qualifications, completeness, repeatability, and local evidentiary rules. A Cellebrite-generated report is not automatically self-authenticating proof.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cellebrite can lawfully recover and analyze a wide range of mobile, computer, app, and cloud evidence, sometimes including protected or deleted artifacts. Cellebrite cannot guarantee complete recovery from every device. Device model, OS version, AFU/BFU state, encryption, app design, deletion history, cloud access, extraction depth, and legal authority determine what can actually be obtained.
