Analog component video carries picture information over multiple separate signals rather than combining it into one waveform. The two common forms are RGB (red, green, and blue) and YPbPr (luma plus two color-difference signals). In consumer electronics, “component video” often means YPbPr, but the term also applies to RGB.
What does analog component video mean?
“Component” describes how the picture is represented: its information is divided among separate analog signal paths. Analog Devices describes a three-wire component-video interface that carries either RGB or luma with two color-difference signals. The term refers to the signal arrangement, not a particular plug shape or color scheme.
What are the signals in YPbPr and RGB?
YPbPr
YPbPr separates the picture into Y, Pb, and Pr. Y carries luma—the brightness information—while Pb and Pr carry scaled blue-minus-luma and red-minus-luma information. This is an analog color-difference representation used for component video.

RGB carries red, green, and blue signals separately. It is also a component-video format, even though consumer devices often use “component video” to refer specifically to YPbPr.

- This cable includes conductors for each of the three component video channels.
- The connector housings have color-coded knurled rubber rings for easy identification and a perfect grip when installing or removing the cable.
- The video conductors in this cable are made from RG-59 coaxial cable, with 22AWG cores.
- The connectors are gold plated to ensure smooth, corrosion-free connections.
Is component video the same as YPbPr?
Not exactly. YPbPr is one form of component video; RGB is another. The wording on a particular product may use “component” narrowly for YPbPr, so check the device’s labeled ports and manual rather than assuming which format it accepts. Analog Devices’ video basics describes both forms.
How is component video different from composite video?
Component video keeps picture information on separate signal paths. Composite video combines luma, chroma, the color-reference burst, and synchronization into a single waveform. The distinction is about how the signal is carried; it does not, by itself, establish that one connection will produce better picture quality in every setup. The result depends on the equipment and signal path.

Is YPbPr analog or digital?
YPbPr is analog. YCbCr is a related digital component-video representation, not another name for the same analog interface. Microsoft describes Y′PbPr as the color space used in analog component video, while Texas Instruments distinguishes it from digital YCbCr in its TVP5146 FAQ. That decoder’s listed support for YPbPr at 480i and 576i, and for component RGB, applies to that specific product; it is not a general compatibility or resolution rule for component-video equipment.
What cable do you need for YPbPr component video?
Use a compatible three-channel component-video cable for the separate Y, Pb, and Pr paths. Before connecting, confirm that the source has Y/Pb/Pr outputs and the display has compatible Y/Pb/Pr inputs. Match each signal to its corresponding labeled connection and consult both manuals.

Plug colors alone do not prove that a cable or port supports the format you need. An RGB output is not interchangeable with YPbPr inputs without suitable conversion, and a digital YCbCr connection is not a direct analog substitute.

- Confirm the signal format: Check whether each device supports YPbPr, RGB, composite, or digital YCbCr. A shared connector style does not establish a shared signal format.
- Check supported modes: Look up scan modes and timings in both device manuals. “Component video” alone does not specify which modes a particular device accepts.
- Verify connectors and sync: Confirm that the connector and synchronization arrangement match at both ends.
- Determine whether conversion is needed: If the source and display use different formats, verify that an active converter supports the formats and modes involved.
There is no universal compatibility table for all component-video devices; these details depend on the models being connected.
