To let someone view a ChatGPT conversation, create and send a share link. To make exported conversations available in another personal account, export your data and upload the conversation JSON file into a new chat. Neither method moves a conversation into another account’s chat history or merges accounts.
Choose the right way to move or share a conversation

OpenAI says accounts cannot be fully merged and conversations cannot be moved directly from one account’s history into another. See OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions.
How to share a ChatGPT conversation with a link
- Open the conversation you want to share and select Share.
- Review the preview and the available sharing options. Check the conversation and any supported images or uploaded files for information you do not want to disclose.
- Select Create link or Copy link, then send the link to the intended recipient. On mobile, a device share sheet may open; the destinations shown depend on your device and browser.
OpenAI’s sharing guidance describes personal-account links as accessible to anyone who has them. The link is therefore not a private, recipient-specific permission. The guidance does not describe configurable expiration dates for these links.
Understand what a personal share link shows
A personal shared link reflects the conversation content available when the link is created or updated; later messages are not added automatically. To refresh it, use Update link. If you no longer want the link to provide access, go to Settings > Data controls > Shared links > Manage and delete it. Deleting the link does not erase a copy that a recipient already saved.

Deleting a share link and deleting the underlying conversation are separate actions. OpenAI explains chat deletion and archiving in its chat deletion and archiving guidance.
Sharing from a managed workspace
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and other managed workspaces may restrict access to eligible members of the originating workspace, and workspace controls can differ. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business privacy guidance says people outside a Business workspace cannot view a Business shared chat. Review the sharing notice and workspace rules before sending the link or adding more material.

How to use exported conversations in another personal account
- Request a data export from the account that contains the conversations you need.
- Download and extract the ZIP file. Locate
conversations.json; a large export may contain numbered conversation JSON files. - Sign in to the other personal ChatGPT account and start a new conversation.
- Upload the JSON file to that conversation. You can refer to the exported material there.
This is a reference workflow, not a restoration. The uploaded data does not recreate each old conversation as an individual chat or restore the original sidebar. It also does not transfer subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files, or workspace access. OpenAI’s transfer instructions explain the process and its limitations.
If the JSON file is too large
OpenAI suggests uploading numbered files separately, splitting the file, or selecting only the conversations you need. The goal is to make the exported material usable in a new chat, not to reconstruct the former account’s chat list.

Export availability depends on account type
ChatGPT settings exports are unavailable for Business and Enterprise accounts. Edu exports depend on eligibility and administrator enablement. Check the applicable account or workspace guidance before relying on an export for a transfer.

OpenAI’s data-export article identifies a shared_conversations file containing shared-conversation metadata such as the link ID, conversation ID, title, and anonymity setting. That metadata should not be treated as a backup of every shared snapshot or as a way to restore shared links in another account.
