An API gateway is a shared entry point that receives requests from clients, routes them to backend services, and returns their responses. Depending on the product and configuration, it can also apply shared controls such as authentication, rate limits, TLS handling, and monitoring. You may need one when multiple services are difficult for clients to reach or govern consistently—not simply because your application uses microservices.

What does an API gateway do?

An API gateway commonly works as a reverse proxy in front of backend APIs. Instead of connecting directly to several service endpoints, a client sends requests to the gateway’s public endpoint. The gateway routes each request to an appropriate backend and passes the response back to the client. Microsoft describes this as a way to shield clients from tracking multiple endpoints, while Google documents using a stable API surface to hide backend implementation changes (Microsoft’s API gateway pattern; Google Cloud’s architecture overview).

Depending on the implementation, the gateway may also centralize API-level policies and operations, including authentication, rate limiting, TLS termination, request transformation, logging, or monitoring. These are possible functions, not a standard feature set guaranteed by every gateway. Check the specific product and configuration before relying on any of them (AWS API Gateway documentation).

How does a request flow through a gateway?

  1. The client sends a request to the gateway’s public endpoint.
  2. The gateway matches a route and, if configured, checks authentication or other policies.
  3. The gateway forwards the request to the selected backend service.
  4. The response returns through the gateway to the client; the gateway may also record logs or traces if configured.

This describes the flow in Google Cloud’s documented architecture, which includes route matching and optional JWT or API-key checks. Other products can differ, so treat it as an example rather than a universal processing sequence (Google Cloud API Gateway architecture).

When is an API gateway useful?

Clients need one entry point for several services

If an application has multiple backend services, a gateway can route requests without requiring each client to know every service location. This is useful when the number of endpoints or client-side routing responsibilities has become difficult to manage (Microsoft’s API gateway pattern).

Backend services change more often than the client contract

A stable, compatible public API can let teams change backend implementations without forcing clients to follow every internal change. The gateway can help separate that client-facing surface from the services behind it. It does not make breaking changes to the public contract invisible: clients still need changes if the contract itself stops being compatible (Google Cloud’s architecture overview).

Teams want shared API-level policies

A gateway may provide one place to configure controls such as authentication, rate limiting, TLS handling, or monitoring. That can reduce repeated work across services, but only if the chosen gateway supports the required controls and the team configures them correctly. A gateway is not, by itself, proof that an API is secure or monitored (Microsoft; AWS).

APIs need publishing or lifecycle management

Managed API offerings may add tools for API configuration, access control, and monitoring. Their capabilities vary by provider and product, so compare the actual features against the work your team needs to do rather than assuming that all gateways provide a full API-management experience (AWS API Gateway; Google Cloud API Gateway).

Kubernetes teams need shared service-networking resources

Kubernetes Gateway API provides a role-oriented resource model for service networking. It is a specification implemented by products, not a gateway product itself. The behavior and supported capabilities depend on the implementation you install (Kubernetes Gateway API documentation).

When might you not need one?

If a small application has only a few stable endpoints and clients can reach them directly without duplicated policy work, a dedicated gateway may add more configuration and operational responsibility than value. A Layer 7 reverse proxy or load balancer may also be sufficient when the main need is routing or traffic distribution rather than API publication or shared API controls.

These categories overlap, and product capabilities differ. For example, Microsoft says Azure API Management does not perform load balancing and recommends combining it with a load balancer or reverse proxy when that function is required (Microsoft’s API gateway pattern).

API gateway vs. reverse proxy vs. load balancer

The names describe overlapping roles, not a universal feature boundary. A reverse proxy receives client requests and forwards them to servers; a load balancer distributes traffic among targets. An API gateway generally adds an API-focused entry point and may offer routing, policy enforcement, or API-management functions. Verify the exact feature set of a product instead of choosing by label alone.

In particular, “API gateway” and “Gateway API” are not interchangeable terms. The latter is the name of the Kubernetes service-networking project and its resources; some API gateway products can be configured through those resources (Kubernetes Gateway API documentation).

What does a gateway cost in complexity and performance?

A gateway adds a component and a configuration boundary to operate. Routes, certificates, allow lists, and security settings need ownership and change processes. A custom or externally deployed gateway can increase management work; Microsoft recommends using built-in platform options where they meet requirements and highlights the governance needs of custom gateways (Microsoft’s API gateway pattern).

A gateway also creates another network hop. There is no universal latency overhead that applies across products and architectures; measure latency and throughput in the design you intend to deploy. Pricing likewise depends on the provider, traffic, and enabled features, so check current pricing for the exact configuration rather than relying on a cross-provider generalization.

Rate limits should not automatically be treated as exact hard ceilings. AWS documents its HTTP API throttling as token-bucket based and best-effort; clients may receive HTTP 429 responses when configured rate or burst targets are exceeded. That behavior is specific to AWS’s documented service and is not a guarantee for every gateway (AWS HTTP API throttling).

How should you choose an API gateway?

  1. List the capabilities you actually require. Check support for routing, authentication, rate limiting, TLS or mTLS handling, transformation, WAF integration, logging, monitoring, and API publication. Confirm availability for the specific product and deployment.
  2. Choose a deployment model your team can operate. Compare managed and self-hosted options, platform integration, configuration ownership, upgrades, and availability responsibilities. Prefer a built-in platform solution if it meets the requirements and reduces unnecessary operations work.
  3. Test the intended traffic pattern. Measure latency and throughput with your routes, policies, and backends in place; do not assume that a general figure predicts your result.
  4. Check client and backend needs. Decide whether you need a stable public contract, multiple backend routes, WebSocket support, or API consumer-management features. For example, AWS documents REST, HTTP, and WebSocket API support for its service; this does not establish equivalent support in other products (AWS API Gateway documentation).
  5. For Kubernetes, verify implementation support. Confirm that the controller or product you plan to use implements the Gateway API features you need. The specification does not guarantee that every implementation supports every capability (Kubernetes Gateway API documentation).

Do you need an API gateway for microservices?

Not automatically. Microservices make a gateway worth evaluating when clients must otherwise track many service endpoints, teams need shared API-level controls, or a stable client-facing interface would help isolate backend changes. If those problems are absent—or a simpler reverse proxy or load balancer meets the actual need—a separate API gateway may not be justified.
