This Itechguide explains Amazon Smile (AmazonSmile). The guide starts with a detailed explanation of Amazon Smile. Then, it explains how it works and ends with its features benefits.

What is Amazon Smile?

It is a shopping website operated by Amazon – when you shop on this website, AmazonSmile Foundation donates 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to a charity of your choice.

AmazonSmile website (Smile.Amazon.com) has the same products as Amazon.com. Moreover, the products on Smile.Amazon.com are sold at the same price as Amazon.com. The only difference is that by buying from AmazonSmile, you are supporting a good course.

How AmazonSmile Works

Here is a summary of how this scheme works:

  1. Sign up for AmazonSmile – I recommend signing up with the same email address you use to sign in to your Amazon account
  2. Select the charity you want to support – use the search box on the top left of the page to find your charity of choice
  3. Purchase eligible products* – the same way you would purchase a product on Amazon.com. However, this time you make the purchase from smile.Amazon.com website
  4. If you purchased an eligible product, AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the product purchase price to your selected charity.
*Before you purchase a product from smile.Amazon.com, Amazon will indicate whether the product is eligible for Smile charity donation

Features & Benefits of Amazon Smile

To further understand this service from Amazon, this section explains the major features and benefits:

Sign Up with Your Existing Amazon Account

The first benefit of AmazonSmile is that you can sign up with your Amazon account. This makes it easy and quick to start supporting your charity of choice.

Sign up in 2 easy steps: 1, login in to your Amazon account. 2, from the same browser, open smile.Amazon.com – then, on the top left of the page, click Get started.

Select or Change Your Charity Easily

Another great benefit of this service is that you get to choose the charity you wish to support. If you have a charity you already support, signing up for AmazonSmile will be an added benefit to the charity as they will receive more donations from you (indirectly) – by shopping on Amazon.

You may also change the charity you wish Amazon to donate. To change your supported charity, sign in to Smile.Amazon.com, then on the top right of the page, hover over “Your Account” – then, select “Change your charity”.

No Additional Cost to You

When you shop on Smile.Amazon.com, you do not pay a cent extra! You may exactly the same amount you will pay if you purchased the same product from Amazon.com. The only difference is that Amazon will donate to your nominated charity.

The only added benefit to you is the additional “feel good” factor of contributing to a worthy cause. Moreover, you are buying the same products you would have bought anyway.

Eligible Products Clearly Labelled

Another feature/benefit of Amazon Smile is that products that are eligible for donation are clearly marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” – this information is available on the product detail pages.

This makes it easy for you to determine purchases that Amazon will be making donations for.

As at the time of writing this Itechguide, products that belong to Subscribe-and-Save with recurring purchases are not eligible.

Register a Charity of Your Choice

If a charity you want to support is not yet listed in AmazonSmile, you can register the charity. Moreover, if you represent a charity and will want the charity to receive donations from AmazonSmile, you can also register the charity.

To register a charity, visit org.amazon.com, click Register Now, then follow the steps to complete the registration.
