ChatGPT privacy has three separate controls: whether new conversations may help improve models, whether ChatGPT uses information to personalize replies, and how long your data remains stored. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
For a personal signed-in account, you can disable Improve the model for everyone, use Temporary Chat, review or delete memories, export your data, and delete chats or files. Managed Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API environments follow organization settings, agreements, and retention rules, so some self-service controls may be unavailable.
The privacy controls are separate
ChatGPT’s settings answer different questions. Model-improvement settings govern whether eligible new content can be used to improve OpenAI models. Memory controls govern information ChatGPT saves for personalization. History and retention controls govern whether chats, files, and related records remain available in your account or workspace.

These distinctions explain why a privacy change can appear not to work. For example, turning off model improvement can stop future use for model development while the same old conversations continue to appear in history.

How to stop new personal chats from improving models
On the web
- Open the account menu in ChatGPT.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Turn Improve the model for everyone off.
OpenAI’s Help Center describes the result this way: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting applies across devices when you are signed in to the same account.
On a phone or tablet
- Open the sidebar.
- Tap your profile.
- Choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
Labels and navigation can change as ChatGPT is updated. If a menu looks different, use the current Settings and Privacy Center screens rather than assuming a missing option means the account is not protected.
If you use ChatGPT while signed out
A signed-out choice is stored in that browser. It does not automatically follow you to another browser, device, or account. Sign in before changing the setting if you want one account-wide preference that follows you across devices.

It affects new conversations, not your existing history
Disabling model improvement is an opt-out for new conversations. Saved chats remain in your history and can still be opened, searched, archived, or deleted according to your account or workspace rules. The setting does not hide them from the account interface.
This is why the direct answer to “Does turning off model training delete my chats?” is no. To remove a saved conversation, use the chat’s delete command or the account’s deletion tools separately.
Feedback can create an exception
For individual plans, OpenAI says that submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down after opting out can allow the entire conversation associated with that feedback to be used to improve models. If avoiding model-improvement use is your priority, do not submit feedback on a conversation you expect to remain excluded.
What happens if you turn training off after a conversation?
The switch is not retroactive. It governs new conversations after the change; it does not withdraw an earlier conversation from any processing that already occurred. For an old chat you no longer want retained, delete the chat and handle related memories, files, or connected-source copies separately.

Temporary Chat: what it protects and what it cannot promise
Start a temporary conversation
- Start a new chat.
- Choose Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Send your message only after confirming the choice.
Personalization cannot be changed after the conversation starts. Neither option creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary.
Personalized versus unpersonalized temporary chats

Temporary chats stay out of your normal history and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. That is a maximum operational period stated in OpenAI support documentation, not a guarantee that every chat is kept for the full period.

Saving a temporary chat changes its status
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes an ordinary chat. It then follows the account-level or workspace-level history, memory, model-improvement, and deletion settings that apply to regular conversations.
Third-party actions are outside ChatGPT’s retention promise
If a GPT action sends information to another service, that recipient’s privacy policy governs what happens next. Temporary Chat does not control a third party’s storage, use, or deletion practices. Avoid entering information into an action unless you understand the recipient and its terms.
Memory, chat history, and model improvement are different
What memory is for
Memory stores selected information for personalization, such as preferences or recurring context. Model-improvement settings address a different process: whether eligible content may help improve models. Turning memory off does not turn model improvement off, and opting out of model improvement does not remove saved memories.
Remove something ChatGPT remembers
- Open the account menu and go to Settings.
- Open the Personalization or memory controls shown for your account.
- Review saved memories and delete the item you no longer want retained.
- Delete the chat where you originally supplied the information.
- Check other places that may contain the same information, including Library files, Projects, custom GPT material, or connected-app content.
Deleting only the chat may leave a separately saved memory. Deleting only the memory leaves the original conversation in history. For a fuller removal request, address both records and any copies in connected sources.
A memory summary is not a complete inventory
Memory summaries can omit details. Treat the visible summary as an aid for review, not as a complete record of every fact that may have influenced personalization.
Turning memory off versus deleting memories
Switching memory off stops or limits future personalization according to the control shown, but it is not the same as clearing the saved-memory list. If your goal is removal, open the memory manager, delete individual entries or use the available clear option, then remove the source chat as well.

Disconnecting an app prevents future access through that connection; it does not erase past conversations that already used the app’s content. Review and delete those conversations separately. If the app stores its own copy, deletion must also follow that provider’s controls.
The same principle applies to uploaded documents. Removing a connection or deleting a message does not necessarily remove a file that was saved elsewhere in ChatGPT.
Delete, archive, and retain chats
Archive is organization, not erasure
Archiving hides a conversation from the main chat list while retaining it in the account. Use it to reduce clutter, not to meet a deletion or retention requirement.

What deleting a saved chat does
A deleted saved chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. OpenAI states exceptions for data that has already been de-identified and disassociated, or for information that must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored.

Delete carefully when you need an audit trail
Deletion cannot be reversed. If you may need dates, prompts, or attachments for a work, legal, or personal record, export the account first. After deletion, an export will not restore the chat. For a large cleanup, make a checklist of chats, memories, files, Projects, custom GPTs, and connected services so that deleting one item does not create a false sense that every copy is gone.
Files can outlive the chat that used them
Library files
A file stored in ChatGPT’s Library can remain after you delete the conversation in which you uploaded it. Open Library, locate the file, and delete it there as a separate action.
Projects and custom GPTs
Files attached to Projects and material used by custom GPTs can have their own retention conditions. Deleting an ordinary chat does not automatically establish that every related project or GPT file has been removed. Review each container’s file and management screen.
Export your ChatGPT data
Who can request an export
Eligible signed-in consumer users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans can request a data copy through ChatGPT settings or the Privacy Portal. The exact screens and eligibility can change, so use the current export option displayed for your account.

Managed accounts have different rules
Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces. Eligible Edu workspaces may offer export if an administrator enables it. If your consumer account is managed by an organization, contact that organization for export instructions rather than assuming the personal-account workflow applies.
Use an export before deleting when you need a record
Deletion cannot be undone. If you need a copy for legal, work, or personal records, request and download the export before deleting chats, memories, or files. An export is a copy of available account data, not a way to keep using deleted information inside ChatGPT.
Use the Privacy Center to find current controls
The Privacy Center collects paths for memory, Temporary Chat, connected apps, multifactor authentication, model improvement, export, and deletion. Opening it does not change settings, delete data, or override an organization’s policy.
Because ChatGPT’s navigation and feature availability can change by account, plan, region, or workspace, confirm the labels shown in your current Settings and Privacy Center screens. A control absent from a managed workspace may be restricted by an administrator rather than removed from the product entirely.

“By default” does not mean every organization has identical behavior. An administrator can configure retention, access, and connected services, and an agreement may impose different obligations. Ask your administrator which policy governs your workspace.

- Use Temporary Chat for a conversation you do not want in normal history, and choose Unpersonalized if you do not want memory, custom instructions, or plugins used.
- Remember that Temporary Chat may be retained for safety for up to 30 days.
- Review and delete saved memories separately from chats.
- Delete the original chat and check Library, Projects, custom GPTs, and connected apps for additional copies.
- Archive only when you want organization; archive does not reduce retention.
- Request an export before deleting information you may need later.
- For a managed workspace, ask the administrator which export, deletion, and retention controls apply.
Common situations and the right action
“I switched off training, but my old chats are still there.”
That is expected. The model-improvement setting does not delete history. Delete the individual chats or use the available account deletion controls.
“I turned off memory, but ChatGPT still has the conversation.”
Memory and history are separate. Delete the saved memory and the chat where you shared the information, then check files and connected sources.
“I deleted the chat, but the uploaded document remains.”
Check Library and delete the file there. Also inspect any Project or custom GPT that received a copy.

Your account may be managed, your plan may not be eligible for that self-service feature, or an administrator may control it. Check the Privacy Center and contact the organization responsible for the account.
“I used Temporary Chat with a GPT action.”
Temporary status applies to ChatGPT’s handling while the conversation is temporary. The external recipient may retain or use information under its own privacy policy.
“Does deleting a chat delete a memory created from it?”
Not necessarily. A saved memory is a separate record. Delete the memory in Personalization settings and delete the source conversation.
“Can I recover a deleted chat?”
No. Deletion cannot be undone. Export anything you need before using the delete command.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off model training delete my chats?
No. Turning off Improve the model for everyone applies to new conversations and does not remove saved chats from history. Delete those chats separately.
How do I stop my chats from training ChatGPT?
On a personal signed-in account, open Settings, choose Data controls, and turn Improve the model for everyone off. The setting applies across devices for that account.
What about Temporary Chats?
Temporary Chats stay out of history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI may retain a safety copy for up to 30 days.
What is the difference between Memory and chat history?
Memory supports personalization through separately saved information. Chat history is the conversation record. Turning off or deleting one does not automatically remove the other.
Can a deleted chat still leave related data behind?

Are ChatGPT Business and Enterprise chats used to improve models?
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and the API Platform is not used to improve models by default. Organization settings, agreements, administrators, and retention policies still govern the workspace.
Why can’t I export my workspace data myself?
Self-service export is unavailable for Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces. Eligible Edu workspaces may allow it when an administrator enables the feature; otherwise contact your organization.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat model improvement, personalization, and retention as separate decisions. Turn off Improve the model for everyone to exclude new personal chats from model improvement, use Temporary Chat for out-of-history conversations, delete memories and source chats separately, remove Library or Project files independently, and export before deleting anything you may need. In a managed workspace, your administrator’s policy controls what you can change.
