When you sell shares of a spot-Bitcoin ETF, Bitcoin is usually not sold at that moment. Your trade normally occurs on a stock exchange, where another investor buys the shares. The fund’s bitcoin holdings and share count stay unchanged unless authorized participants later return shares to the issuer for a primary-market redemption.
In a cash-redemption structure, that redemption retires shares and requires the trust or its execution agent to sell bitcoin to raise cash. Such selling can pressure Bitcoin’s spot price, but the size and timing of the effect depend on market depth, execution venues, futures positioning, hedging, concurrent demand and the fund’s liquidity. There is no reliable rule that converts a specific dollar outflow into a fixed percentage Bitcoin decline.
First, separate a shareholder sale from a fund redemption
Headlines often use “ETF outflow” to describe several different events. The distinction matters because only one of them necessarily changes the fund’s bitcoin inventory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSecondary-market sale: your shares change hands
Most investors sell ETF shares through a broker on an exchange. The buyer may be another investor, a market maker or an arbitrageur. Cash moves between those two parties; the trust does not receive the proceeds, and it does not need to sell bitcoin simply because the trade occurred.

After a secondary-market sale, the ETF generally has the same number of shares outstanding and the same bitcoin holdings as before. The transaction can still affect the quoted share price, bid-ask spread and premium or discount to net asset value (NAV), but it is not itself a redemption from the trust.
Primary-market redemption: shares are retired
Authorized participants (APs) are the large financial institutions allowed to create or redeem ETF shares directly with the issuer. If APs accumulate shares and submit them for redemption, the issuer retires those shares. Net redemptions reduce shares outstanding.
The Federal Reserve explains that crypto exchange-traded products must redeem in cash. That structure inserts an additional arbitrage and custody step: the AP receives cash rather than a direct delivery of the underlying bitcoin, while the trust or an appointed execution agent must obtain the cash needed for the redemption.
Bitcoin execution: the trust raises cash
To fund a cash redemption, the trust or its agent sells bitcoin. The sale may be executed over-the-counter, across several trading venues, or through another product-specific process. Public filings and prospectuses can describe the arrangement, but the exact venue, order size and timing are specific to the fund and its execution agent. It is therefore incorrect to assume that every redemption appears immediately as one large order on a public exchange.
| Event | Shares outstanding | Trust bitcoin holdings | Immediate market effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investor sells shares to another exchange buyer | Usually unchanged | Usually unchanged | Share price, spread or premium/discount can move |
| AP submits a primary-market redemption | Falls when shares are retired | Can fall after bitcoin is sold for cash | Potential spot-selling pressure, filtered through execution and liquidity |
| AP or market maker hedges with futures or spot | Unchanged | Unchanged until a redemption occurs | Can transmit pressure between ETF, futures and spot markets |
How a redemption can reach Bitcoin’s price
The mechanical chain is straightforward, but each link can dilute or amplify the final price effect.
- Investor demand changes. A wave of shareholders sells ETF shares. If buyers are available, the trades remain in the secondary market. If selling is persistent, APs or market makers may accumulate inventory.
- Arbitrage conditions appear. If the ETF trades below the value of its bitcoin, an AP can buy shares and consider redeeming them. The economics depend on fees, financing, operational limits, custody and the size of the discount.
- Shares are redeemed. The issuer retires the shares and pays cash under the product’s redemption process.
- Bitcoin is sold. The trust or agent sells enough bitcoin to raise that cash. Execution can be staged, routed to multiple venues or conducted OTC.
- Other participants react. Liquidity providers adjust quotes, hedgers trade futures or spot, and arbitrageurs compare prices across markets. Their responses determine how much of the sale is absorbed without a lasting move.
The Bank for International Settlements describes this transmission as flow rebalancing: when an ETF buys futures after inflows, futures prices can rise; outflows can reverse that pressure. It also notes that futures-market price moves can spill over to spot prices through investors’ hedging behavior. A spot ETF’s cash-redemption sale can therefore interact with futures and spot markets rather than acting as an isolated transaction.

Why a large outflow does not have a fixed Bitcoin price impact
A dollar amount tells you the size of a redemption, not the market’s capacity to absorb it. The same $1 billion of net redemptions could have very different outcomes on a deep, orderly day than during a thin market or a broad risk-off event.

Depth is the quantity of buy orders available near the current price. Selling gradually into deep liquidity can produce little slippage. Selling urgently into a shallow book can move the price several levels before other buyers appear. An OTC transaction may reduce the visible impact on a single exchange, while dealers that hedge the risk can spread the effect across venues.
Concurrent demand
New ETF creations, corporate purchases, miners, long-term holders and other spot buyers can offset redemption selling. Net ETF outflow is only one component of total Bitcoin supply and demand. A fund can sell bitcoin while the broader market is buying, leaving the observed price change small or even positive.
Futures positioning and hedging
Dealers that acquire unwanted ETF inventory may hedge with futures or spot. If many participants hedge in the same direction, futures prices can move first and influence spot through arbitrage. Conversely, short positions may be covered during a decline, cushioning the move. The direction and leverage of these positions are not captured by an outflow headline alone.
Venue, timing and custody frictions
Cash redemption adds operational steps. The Federal Reserve notes that crypto ETPs track NAV less closely than comparable products referencing assets with more liquid markets. Custody transfers, settlement windows, financing costs and limits on where an agent can trade can delay or reshape execution. A redemption announced on one day may be executed over a different interval.

Investor expectations
Markets can react before any bitcoin is sold. Traders may anticipate redemptions from a discount, a flow report or a deteriorating risk backdrop. The resulting price move can then influence more shareholders to sell, creating feedback between price and flows.

Do ETF outflows cause Bitcoin declines, or do declines cause outflows?
Both directions are possible. A falling Bitcoin price can prompt shareholders to redeem, while expected redemptions can pressure price through hedging and eventual spot sales. Correlation between a daily outflow and a daily decline does not establish that the outflow caused the entire decline.
Nico Oefele’s 2025 analysis of a one-year Bitcoin spot-ETP sample found average weekly net fund flow of 1.4%. In the reported relationship, a 3.4% Bitcoin price change corresponded on average to a 0.2% net-flow change, all else equal. The figures describe an estimated association in that sample, not a trading rule and not a guaranteed response for every fund or week.
To assess causality in a particular episode, examine the sequence: Did Bitcoin fall before the outflow? Were futures liquidations, macroeconomic news or a broad risk-off move occurring at the same time? Did several funds experience creations while one fund reported a redemption? Were discounts or premiums widening before AP activity? Without that context, an outflow number is descriptive rather than explanatory.

ETF investors experience two forms of liquidity: the ability to trade shares and the ability of the underlying market to absorb creation or redemption transactions.
Bid-ask spreads
The Federal Reserve’s 2025 analysis found a mean bid-ask spread of 4.6 basis points across its crypto ETF/ETP sample, compared with 58.1 basis points for the reference assets. The averages are sample-wide measurements, not a promise for every product or trading time. Larger, actively traded products generally attract more market-making competition and tighter spreads, while spreads can widen during volatile or illiquid periods.
As Francesca Carapella and Nathan Swem wrote, “crypto ETPs average bid/asked spreads are similar to those of other ETPs and ETFs of comparable size.” That comparison concerns trading costs in the shares; it does not mean the underlying bitcoin can always be liquidated at the same cost.

NAV premiums and discounts
NAV is the per-share value of the trust’s assets after liabilities. When the share price is above NAV, the product trades at a premium; below NAV, it trades at a discount. AP arbitrage tends to pull the price toward NAV, but cash redemption, custody and execution frictions can make the process slower or less complete than in traditional equity or bond ETFs.

The Federal Reserve also states that “crypto ETPs track NAV less-closely than other ETPs and ETFs referencing assets of comparable liquidity.” A widening discount can be an early sign that selling pressure, financing costs or operational constraints are overwhelming arbitrage capacity. It is not proof that the trust has already sold an equivalent amount of bitcoin.
Share turnover versus primary flows
High daily share volume can consist almost entirely of secondary-market trading. It does not equal creations or redemptions. For a flow analysis, compare reported net creations and redemptions with share turnover, assets, NAV premium or discount and the underlying market’s volume and depth.

How to analyze a reported $1 billion outflow
Do not translate the headline directly into a percentage price forecast. Use a sequence that separates what is known from what is inferred.
- Confirm the definition of outflow. Determine whether the figure is net creations and redemptions, estimated investor withdrawals, or secondary-market turnover. These are not interchangeable.
- Check the reporting period. A daily number may represent trades accumulated over a prior settlement window. Note the fund’s cutoff time and the date on which bitcoin execution occurred, if disclosed.
- Measure the outflow against assets and inventory. A billion dollars is a different fraction of a $100 billion product than of a $5 billion product. Use the fund’s NAV and shares outstanding for the same date.
- Compare with market liquidity. Examine spot order-book depth, aggregate exchange volume, OTC capacity and futures open interest. A nominal flow larger than immediately available depth is more likely to create slippage or staged execution.
- Inspect the share price relative to NAV. A discount can indicate selling pressure or constrained arbitrage; a premium can attract creations that offset redemptions.
- Look for hedging and derivatives effects. Review futures basis, open-interest changes and liquidation activity. A futures move may precede or magnify a spot move.
- Search for competing flows. Other ETFs, long-term holders, miners, corporate buyers and macro funds may be buying or selling simultaneously.
- Test the timing hypothesis. If Bitcoin moved sharply before the outflow, the price decline may have triggered redemptions. If the discount and futures pressure appeared first, the flow may have contributed to the decline. Often both mechanisms operate together.
This process can establish a plausible transmission path, but it still cannot produce a stable dollars-to-percentage formula. The required variables change from hour to hour.

An illustrative redemption timeline
Consider a hypothetical day on which shareholders sell enough shares that APs accumulate a large inventory and submit a $1 billion cash redemption. The following sequence is possible, but the numbers and execution path are illustrative rather than a forecast.
- Shareholders sell shares to market makers. The ETF trades at a small discount to NAV.
- An AP buys discounted shares because the expected redemption value exceeds the purchase price after fees and financing.
- The issuer accepts the shares for redemption and retires them.
- The trust’s execution agent sells bitcoin in several clips, possibly using OTC liquidity and multiple venues.
- Dealers hedge their exposure in futures. Futures prices soften, and arbitrageurs trade the spot-futures spread.
- New spot buyers absorb part of the supply. If they absorb all of it near the prevailing price, the lasting decline may be limited; if liquidity is thin, quotes may move lower until buyers return.
- A lower Bitcoin price causes additional shareholders to sell, or a recovery attracts creations. The eventual result reflects the entire feedback loop, not only the original redemption.
What investors should watch before acting
- Net creations and redemptions: use issuer or exchange disclosures rather than assuming share volume equals fund flow.
- Shares outstanding and bitcoin per share: falling shares with falling bitcoin holdings is consistent with primary redemptions; unchanged holdings during heavy turnover point to secondary trading.
- NAV premium or discount: persistent deviations can signal stressed arbitrage or unusual demand.
- Bid-ask spread and quoted depth: compare normal and volatile periods, not just a single snapshot.
- Execution disclosures: read the prospectus and reports for cash-redemption mechanics, custody arrangements and execution-agent details.
- Spot and futures conditions: review basis, open interest, liquidations and cross-venue price differences.
- Broader catalysts: macroeconomic announcements, regulatory news and changes in risk appetite can dominate ETF-specific flows.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating every share sale as a bitcoin sale
Fix: ask whether the trade was secondary-market turnover or a primary-market redemption. Only the latter necessarily reduces shares outstanding and can require the trust to sell bitcoin.
Mistake: assuming an outflow hits one public order book immediately
Fix: check the product’s cash-redemption and execution arrangements. OTC trades, staged orders and multiple venues can change both timing and visibility.

Fix: compare the flow with current spot and futures liquidity, concurrent demand, volatility and execution speed. The same flow can have different effects on different days.
Mistake: reading correlation as causation
Fix: establish the time order and examine competing explanations. Price declines often lead investors to redeem, while anticipated redemptions can also pressure price.
Mistake: judging liquidity only by ETF trading volume
Fix: evaluate spreads, depth, NAV tracking and the liquidity of the underlying bitcoin market. A heavily traded share can still reference an asset that is costly to move during stress.
Bottom line for the “what happens when investors sell?” question
A normal investor sale transfers ETF shares to another buyer and does not automatically make the trust sell bitcoin. Bitcoin selling enters the picture when APs redeem shares with the issuer; under a cash-redemption structure, the trust or its agent then sells bitcoin to raise cash. That supply can affect spot prices, and hedging can transmit the pressure through futures, but market depth, timing, competing demand and custody constraints determine the result. ETF outflows are therefore an important flow signal, not a standalone price calculator.
