Submitting an open-source pull request starts review; it does not automatically accept, merge, or deploy your change. Reviewers may discuss the diff and request revisions, automated checks may run, and the project’s configured rules determine what must happen before someone with merge permission can integrate it. Each repository sets its own workflow.
What happens first: the proposal becomes visible
Your pull request (PR) presents the proposed changes, commits, discussion, and check status in one place for the project to review. A repository template may ask you to explain the change, link an issue, describe testing, or complete a checklist. The project may also use code ownership rules to route review requests to people responsible for the files you changed. See GitHub’s overview of pull requests.
How code review and revisions work
Reviewers inspect the diff and can comment on particular lines, ask questions, approve the proposal, or request changes. Some hosting platforms also let reviewers suggest edits that contributors can apply through the interface; GitLab documents inline comments and suggestions in its merge request review guide.
If changes are requested, update the contribution and continue the discussion. A request for changes is part of review, not necessarily a final rejection. Keep replies focused on the requested work and explain any relevant adjustment.

Whether an existing approval still counts after you push new commits depends on repository settings. For example, GitHub can dismiss stale approvals when a pull request’s diff changes if the relevant branch protection rule is enabled. A new commit does not invalidate approval in every repository; check the project’s rules and current review status. Details are in GitHub’s protected-branch documentation.
Which automated checks may run?
A project may run tests, linting, security checks, or other automation against a proposed change. With GitHub Actions, the pull_request event normally uses the pull request’s merge branch for open, mergeable pull requests, so the workflow can test the proposed change in a merge context. A workflow can instead check out the contributor’s head commit. The project’s workflow configuration determines what runs; GitHub explains the event behavior in its pull_request event documentation.

Checks are not automatically merge requirements just because they appear on a PR. A repository can configure passing status checks as a condition for merging, or leave checks advisory. Look at the PR’s status panel and contribution guide to see which results matter in that project.
What can block a pull request from merging?
Projects configure their own merge gates. A protected branch may require passing checks, a certain number of reviews, signed commits, or other conditions. Some repositories use a merge queue to validate a change against the latest target branch and changes already waiting to merge. GitHub describes these options in its protected-branches guide.

A red check, missing or stale approval, merge conflict, or lack of permission can therefore hold up a proposal. The PR’s status and the repository’s contribution instructions are the best guides to the specific blocker; there is no universal set of required checks.
Who merges the change, and what happens next?
Once the project’s requirements are met, a maintainer or another user with the necessary repository permission merges the change into the target branch using the project’s chosen merge strategy. Submitting a PR does not itself give the contributor permission to merge it. GitHub outlines merge requirements and methods in its pull request merge documentation. Integration into a branch is not necessarily deployment or release. A project may stage the change, monitor it in production, roll it out gradually, or announce it separately. GitLab’s contributor workflow gives examples of such follow-up practices, but they are not mandatory steps for every open-source project.

- Review policy: Who is expected to review, and how many approvals are required?
- Automation: Which tests or checks run, and which are required to merge?
- Permission model: Who can merge, and does the project accept changes through forks?
- After-merge process: Does the project deploy, stage, monitor, or announce changes separately?
The project’s contribution guide, PR status panel, and configured branch rules answer these questions. Review time and acceptance are project-specific; there is no universal duration or acceptance rate that applies to open-source pull requests.
