Bitcoin market indicators are measurements or estimates of particular parts of the market. They can show how market value compares with an on-chain cost-basis estimate, whether recently spent outputs moved at a profit or loss, how labeled exchange addresses changed, or how traders are positioned in derivatives. They cannot reveal every holder’s intent, provide a verified purchase price for every coin, or guarantee the next price move.
Start with the measurement, not the prediction
An indicator is useful when you know exactly what it measures, how it was calculated, and what question it can answer. Bitcoin data spans several market layers:
| Market layer | Examples | What is measured | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-chain activity | Realized price, MVRV, SOPR, exchange flows | Observable transactions and balances, sometimes combined with labels or models | Every owner’s identity, motive, or verified acquisition price |
| Traded spot markets | Price, volume, order books | Executed trades and quoted liquidity on specified venues | The complete global market or future direction |
| Derivatives | Funding, open interest, liquidations, options volatility and skew | Contracts, leverage, positioning, and forced closures for stated venues and instruments | Whether positions will be profitable or when they will be closed |
| Funds and macroeconomics | ETF flows and macroeconomic series | Fund subscriptions or redemptions and external economic variables | A purely on-chain signal or proof of causation |
Glassnode’s market-data catalogue separates these categories rather than treating them as interchangeable. A chart’s label, unit, venue coverage, aggregation interval, and timestamp are part of the data, not minor footnotes.
On-chain indicators: useful lenses with modeled edges
Realized price is an aggregate last-moved estimate
Realized price estimates the average price of the supply at the time each coin last transacted on-chain. It is derived from last-moved prices, not from a verified record of what each person or company paid. Coins may move for operational, custody, inheritance, collateral, or other reasons without changing beneficial ownership. Consequently, realized price is best understood as an aggregate on-chain cost-basis proxy.

Different providers may also apply different entity clustering, treatment of lost or inactive coins, and data-cleaning rules. A realized-price chart is therefore an estimate whose definition must accompany any interpretation.
MVRV compares market value with realized value
Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) compares the current market value of the circulating supply with its realized value:
MVRV = market value ÷ realized value
Because market value is the current spot price multiplied by supply and realized value is built from last-moved prices, MVRV can also be expressed as current spot price divided by realized price. CoinMetrics describes realized capitalization as a gross approximation of aggregate cost basis.

A higher ratio means the market is valued further above that aggregate last-moved estimate; a lower ratio means the gap is smaller or negative. This makes MVRV a profitability and cost-basis lens. It does not tell you the actual purchase price of every holder, whether holders will sell, or when a cycle will turn. Historical discussions of unusually high or low ratios in relation to past tops and bottoms are descriptive context, not a timing rule or a quantified forecast.

SOPR describes the profit or loss of spent outputs
Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) evaluates the value of outputs when they are spent relative to their value when they previously moved. In simplified form, a reading above 1 indicates that the outputs included in the calculation were, in aggregate, spent at a gain; below 1 indicates an aggregate loss; a reading near 1 indicates little aggregate change.
The version matters. Glassnode’s adjusted SOPR excludes outputs with a lifespan shorter than one hour, reducing the influence of rapid change transactions. Entity-adjusted variants exclude transfers between addresses that the provider groups as belonging to one entity. Other providers may use different filters, cohorts, or weighting. Always name the exact SOPR variant before interpreting a threshold. SOPR does not identify the owner who realized a gain or loss, and it does not show whether the transaction was discretionary, operational, or part of a larger internal transfer.
Exchange reserves and net flows depend on labels
Exchange-reserve series add balances held at addresses labeled as exchanges. Net-flow series summarize labeled deposits and withdrawals over a chosen interval. The blockchain records the addresses and movements; the exchange identity is supplied by a labeling and clustering process.

Glassnode notes that exchange addresses are dynamic and imperfectly tracked. A large transfer may initially be unconfirmed in the labeling system, and historical values can change when labels or clusters are updated. A withdrawal can represent self-custody, an over-the-counter settlement, custody activity, collateral movement, or an internal wallet change. It does not prove that coins were purchased for long-term holding. Likewise, an inflow does not prove an imminent sale.

Read the coverage statement, confidence or attribution notes, timestamp, and revision policy before treating a reserve or flow number as a market fact.
Traded-market indicators answer different questions
Spot price, volume, and order books
Spot price is the quoted or executed price on a specified venue or aggregation. Volume counts trades under that provider’s inclusion rules. An order book shows displayed bids and offers, but those quotes can be canceled, moved, or fragmented across venues. A single exchange’s volume or depth is not the entire Bitcoin market. State the venue, currency pair, aggregation method, and interval when citing a figure.
Funding, open interest, and liquidations
Perpetual-futures funding rates describe payments between long and short positions under a contract’s rules. Open interest counts outstanding contracts, with units and calculation conventions varying by venue and product. Liquidations record forced position closures reported by a venue or data aggregator.

They cannot reveal every trader’s directional conviction, because hedges, basis trades, market-making, and multi-venue positions may offset one another. A high funding rate can persist while price rises, falls, or moves sideways. Specify the venue, contract type, quote currency, units, and aggregation window before comparing values.

Options volatility and skew
Implied volatility is the volatility level embedded in options prices under a pricing model. Skew compares implied volatility across strikes or option types. Both are expectations expressed through prices, not direct forecasts of realized volatility. Expiry, strike, tenor, venue, and interpolation method materially affect the reading.
ETF flows and macroeconomic series
ETF net flows describe creations and redemptions for the funds and jurisdiction covered by the series. They are not on-chain flows. Macroeconomic indicators add context about rates, liquidity, currencies, or risk appetite, but a correlation does not establish that one variable caused Bitcoin’s move. Keep these series separate from blockchain-native measures.
Can Bitcoin indicators predict the price?
Not reliably on their own. A high or low reading does not guarantee that price will reverse or continue. Indicators are usually lagging, contemporaneous, or conditional measurements: they describe what has happened or how a market is positioned under a definition. Price is affected by new information, liquidity, leverage, policy, flows across venues, and behavior that no single series captures.
There is no independently validated current hit rate in the cited material for a general Bitcoin-indicator strategy. A historical overlay can show that a threshold coincided with past turning points, but coincidence is not a dependable forward rule. Any predictive claim should specify the sample period, trading costs, look-ahead controls, out-of-sample test, and failure cases. Without those details, treat an indicator as context rather than a promise.

A practical workflow for using indicators
- Write the question first. Decide whether you are asking about aggregate cost basis, realized gains and losses, exchange-attributed activity, leverage, liquidity, or an external flow. Do not start with a chart and retrofit a story.
- Identify the market layer. Mark the series as on-chain observed data, labeled or clustered data, modeled data, traded-market data, derivatives data, ETF data, or macro data.
- Read the formula and filters. Record the numerator, denominator, supply treatment, entity adjustments, age thresholds, excluded transactions, contract type, and weighting. For holder-age classifications in Glassnode’s current documentation, the logistic transition is centered at 155 days with a 10-day transition width; these are methodological parameters, not forecasts.
- Check scope and time. Note the asset, venue or address coverage, timezone, interval, currency, aggregation, and whether the displayed value is provisional or revised.
- Triangulate with a different layer. For example, pair a cost-basis measure with spot liquidity or derivatives positioning, while keeping each definition visible. Agreement across charts is not proof of causation, but disagreement can expose a scope mismatch.
- State a conditional interpretation. Use wording such as “under this definition, the measured cohort is…” rather than “holders are definitely…” or “price must…”
- Record revisions. Save the retrieval date and version or methodology page. If labels are updated, an apparent historical change may be a data revision rather than a new market event.
How to compare two indicators or providers
Two charts with the same name may not be comparable. Use this checklist:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Market layer | Are both charts on-chain, spot, derivatives, ETF, or macro data? |
| Formula and adjustment | Are the denominator, filters, age cutoffs, entity adjustments, and weighting identical? |
| Coverage | Which exchanges, addresses, entities, contracts, jurisdictions, and assets are included? |
| Time basis | Do timestamps, timezone, interval, and smoothing match? |
| Observation status | Is the value directly observed, inferred from labels, or produced by a model? |
| Revision policy | Can labels, clusters, or historical values change, and are revisions documented? |
| Claim type | Is the proposed conclusion descriptive, explanatory, or predictive? |
A 2026 preprint introducing Open Bitcoin Metrics highlights why this discipline matters: widely used Bitcoin metrics are distributed across commercial platforms, can use heterogeneous definitions, and are not always reproducible from primary blockchain data. The work proposes documented, full-node-derived time series for economic research. It is a preprint, not peer-reviewed evidence, but its reproducibility warning is useful when selecting or comparing datasets.
Common interpretation errors and corrections
- “MVRV is everyone’s profit.” Correction: it compares market value with a last-moved-price estimate of realized value; it is not a verified ledger of each holder’s cost.
- “SOPR above one means everyone is selling profitably.” Correction: it summarizes the outputs included by a particular SOPR version. Check filters and entity treatment.
- “Coins left an exchange, so investors are holding.” Correction: labels and motives are uncertain; custody, OTC, collateral, and internal transfers are alternatives.
- “A derivatives spike predicts a crash.” Correction: funding, open interest, and liquidations describe contracts and leverage for defined venues. They do not determine the next price move.
- “Two providers disagree, so one is wrong.” Correction: first compare coverage, formulas, timestamps, labels, and revisions. Different definitions can produce legitimate differences.
- “A historical threshold is a trading guarantee.” Correction: past association is not a validated, out-of-sample forecasting rule.
What a careful conclusion looks like
A defensible statement ties the claim to its measurement: “The selected MVRV series places current market value above its aggregate last-moved estimate,” or “The adjusted SOPR version shows the included spent outputs were, in aggregate, realized below their prior moved value.” You can then discuss plausible scenarios and what additional data would distinguish them. You cannot turn those readings into certainty about intent, a future price, or a universal market signal.
Glassnode Research captures the appropriate attitude: “Does this mean that exchange metrics are useless? Not at all, on the contrary!” The qualification is essential: understand how the metric is computed before using it. Indicators are most valuable as transparent, limited measurements that improve description and decision-making—not as substitutes for evidence, risk controls, or a guaranteed forecast.
