For most startups that want to rent GPUs without a large cloud commitment, Runpod is the strongest first place to check. Its 2026 rate card lists single-GPU Pods as well as serverless workers and clusters. Crusoe is a good alternative when you want a published rate card and single-GPU access; Vast.ai suits price-first experiments if you can evaluate individual hosts. If your GPU needs to live within an existing cloud environment—with its identity, networking, data services and procurement—compare Google Cloud, AWS and Azure instead.

The best choice depends on more than the GPU-hour price. Match the provider to your minimum GPU count, hardware form factor, region, workload uptime, surrounding infrastructure and tolerance for interruptions. Treat listed prices as a starting point, not a complete bill or a guarantee of availability.

Which CoreWeave alternative should a startup consider first?

Start by matching the provider to the way your team will use the GPU, rather than picking the lowest advertised hourly price. For a self-serve team that needs one GPU for development, fine-tuning or inference, Runpod is a practical default to evaluate. For flexible experiments where host variability is acceptable, inspect Vast.ai listings. For workloads that need to fit into a broader cloud estate, evaluate Google Cloud, AWS or Azure.

Crusoe is another option when you want a neocloud with a published rate card and single-GPU choices. Lambda, Modal and Nebius may suit more specific needs—dedicated research hardware and clusters, bursty inference, or European regions and adjacent managed-cloud services—but validate their current rates and capacity before choosing.

There is no single apples-to-apples rate comparison for every provider. A low rate may apply to a different GPU form factor, purchasing mode or host type, and it does not account for storage, CPU, networking or idle time. The useful comparison is the cost and performance of your actual deployment.

What are the strongest alternatives for different startup workloads?

Each option has a different trade-off among self-service, price transparency, host control and integration with a larger cloud platform. Use these roles to narrow the shortlist, then verify the current offering for your region and workload.

Runpod: a flexible self-serve starting point

Runpod separates its offer into Pods for dedicated GPU instances, Serverless for API inference and Clusters for multi-node jobs. Its published catalog includes one-GPU Pods and prices for several GPU configurations. That range makes it a useful first test for teams moving between development, fine-tuning and inference rather than a provider focused on only one deployment shape.

Do not assume that every listed configuration is interchangeable. The rate card distinguishes H100 PCIe from H100 SXM, and the effective choice also depends on region and billing mode. Runpod says Pods span more than 30 regions; confirm that the specific GPU and configuration you need are available where your data and users are located.

Crusoe: published rates and single-GPU access

Crusoe is a neocloud alternative with a public rate card that includes single-GPU options. The listed lineup spans A100, H100, H200, B200 and L40S configurations, with separate prices for A100 PCIe and SXM. Some newer capacity is contact-sales only, so a published rate does not establish that every model can be provisioned immediately on a self-serve basis.

Crusoe is worth checking when price transparency and a neocloud environment matter, but compare like with like: an A100 PCIe price is not a direct substitute for an A100 SXM configuration, and GPU-hour rates alone do not establish total workload cost.

Vast.ai: marketplace flexibility with host-by-host trade-offs

Vast.ai is a marketplace rather than a single uniform hardware fleet. Its live listings can be attractive for experiments with flexible timing and price, but each offer should be evaluated as an individual host: check reputation, location, storage, network path and interruption policy. Offers update hourly, and prices depend on GPU model, supply and demand, and whether the instance is interruptible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes Vast.ai a less predictable fit for a production service that depends on a particular host remaining available. Before committing a workload, test what happens to your data and running job if the host is replaced or interrupted.

Google Cloud, AWS and Azure: GPUs within a larger cloud estate

Hyperscalers are most compelling when the GPU needs to sit alongside existing identity controls, private networking, object storage, databases, monitoring, compliance programs or enterprise procurement. That integration can outweigh a simpler GPU rental rate for teams already operating in one of these environments.

Google Cloud documents on-demand, committed-use and Spot purchasing. Its documentation also makes clear that GPU charges are added to VM resource costs, while disks, machine memory, networking and configuration contribute separately. Google Cloud Spot VMs can be stopped or deleted with 30 seconds’ notice, making them appropriate only for jobs designed to tolerate interruption.

Lambda, Modal and Nebius: shortlist for a specific fit

Lambda is a candidate to investigate for dedicated research hardware and one-click clusters. Modal is a candidate for bursty inference that can scale to zero. Nebius is a candidate when European regions and adjacent managed-cloud services matter. These descriptions are starting points, not a guarantee of current rates, GPU inventory or regional capacity; verify the details with each provider before procurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the published GPU prices?

The figures below are provider-listed or live-market examples reported for 2026, not a controlled price comparison. They are volatile, may reflect different purchase models and do not include every component of a running workload.

Runpod and Crusoe figures are their 2026 rate-card listings; check the live catalog for the exact region, hardware and billing mode before ordering. Google’s figures are approximate Spot VM examples, not standard on-demand rates. Vast.ai’s figures are live-market examples, not quotes; its offers update hourly and can change with supply, demand and interruption status. The displayed GPU rate is not enough to infer the total price of an equivalent deployment across providers.

What does the GPU-hour price leave out?

A GPU-hour is only one part of a deployment bill. Google Cloud explicitly identifies disks, machine memory, networking and VM configuration as separate cost components; comparable cost accounting matters on any provider.

  • CPU and RAM: Check the VM or worker resources paired with the GPU, and whether they are billed separately.
  • Storage: Include local or network disks, persistent data and the cost of keeping them after a GPU job ends.
  • Network traffic: Account for data movement and egress, especially if datasets or inference clients are outside the provider’s environment.
  • Idle time: A provisioned GPU that is waiting for requests or a developer still costs money under hourly billing. Serverless or scale-to-zero designs may change that calculation, but introduce their own startup behavior.
  • Multi-GPU and multi-node needs: Count the smallest purchasable unit and check interconnect and networking, not just the number of GPUs.
  • Managed services: Add the cost of Kubernetes, orchestration, monitoring or other services needed to operate the deployment.

For example, a low-cost single-GPU host can be a poor value if the workload spends substantial time moving data, waiting on startup or recovering from interruptions. Conversely, a higher-priced integrated cloud configuration may be preferable if it avoids extra data movement or operational work. Measure the full job rather than multiplying an advertised rate by training hours alone.

Can I rent one H100 instead of an eight-GPU node?

Yes, some alternatives list single-GPU configurations: Runpod’s rate card includes one-GPU Pods, Crusoe lists single-GPU access, and the Google Cloud examples include one-GPU Spot VMs. That can be useful for development, smaller inference services or workloads that scale across independent jobs rather than requiring a tightly coupled multi-GPU node.

But one H100 is not automatically equivalent to one H100 in a larger node. The form factor matters: Runpod lists separate H100 PCIe and SXM Pod rates. For multi-GPU training, the node’s interconnect and multi-node network can affect performance, so compare the actual topology and benchmark the workload instead of assuming that GPU count alone predicts speed.

Before settling on a single-GPU setup, establish the exact model and memory requirement, whether PCIe or SXM is acceptable, the region, and the minimum count the provider will provision. Then confirm quota and availability for that specific configuration.

How do you choose a provider for production?

Production readiness is not established by a low price or a provider name. Evaluate the particular configuration and operating model you plan to use, including its recovery behavior, support expectations, networking and service terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use dedicated capacity when repeatability matters

With a dedicated instance or managed cloud VM, the provider and configuration are more consistent than a marketplace listing that changes host by host. Still, verify the provider’s support and SLA for the product and plan you are buying; do not infer a service guarantee from the presence of a GPU catalog.

Treat marketplace capacity as a specific host choice

On Vast.ai, inspect the individual offer and test the operational path: can the workload restart elsewhere, is data persistent, and how much time is needed to restore the environment? A marketplace may work well when experiments are repeatable and failures are inexpensive, but the team must be prepared for host-level variation.

Design Spot jobs for interruption

Google Cloud states that Spot VMs can be stopped or deleted with 30 seconds’ notice. Checkpoint training state frequently enough to limit lost work, and build job orchestration so it can resume or restart. A job that cannot tolerate that failure mode should not rely on Spot capacity as if it were uninterrupted compute.

Test inference cold starts and idle economics

For bursty inference, compare the time from an idle state to a usable response as well as the cost of keeping capacity warm. A serverless option that scales to zero can reduce idle GPU spend, but is only a fit if its startup latency and scaling behavior meet the application’s response requirements.

How should a small AI team compare providers?

A short, controlled evaluation is more useful than comparing rate cards in isolation. Use the same workload and container on at least two providers, and record the deployment conditions so the results are interpretable.

  1. Write down the workload requirement. Record the exact GPU model, memory, PCIe or SXM form factor, region and minimum GPU count. Note whether the work is training, fine-tuning, batch inference or interactive inference.
  2. Build a full-cost estimate. Add GPU, vCPU, RAM, storage, network egress, managed Kubernetes or other services, and the expected idle time. Separate hourly compute from recurring storage or service charges.
  3. Run the same container and representative benchmark. Measure throughput, time to startup, failure recovery and data movement. A benchmark that omits startup or data transfer may misrepresent a short-lived or data-heavy job.
  4. Exercise failure and persistence behavior. For marketplace capacity, test host replacement and what persists. For Spot, test checkpoint recovery. For serverless, measure cold starts and scale-to-zero economics.
  5. Check operational fit. Confirm quota, region, support, SLA, IAM, private networking, compliance needs and procurement terms for the exact product—not merely the provider overall.
  6. Recheck immediately before purchase. Availability, quotas, prices and contract terms can change. Confirm the configuration and total cost again when the team is ready to provision.

Should you choose a hyperscaler or a GPU-focused provider?

Choose based on the cost of the whole operating environment. A GPU-focused provider can be easier to evaluate for self-serve access to specific hardware, while a hyperscaler may reduce integration friction when the rest of the application already runs there.

  • Lean toward a GPU-focused option when the immediate need is flexible GPU access, a single-GPU experiment, or a clearly defined serverless or cluster workload.
  • Lean toward the existing hyperscaler when identity, private networking, storage, databases, monitoring, compliance controls or enterprise procurement are already built around it.
  • Keep more than one candidate when availability or price volatility is a risk, but validate that containers, data handling and job recovery make switching practical.

For Google Cloud specifically, compare on-demand, committed-use and Spot purchasing against the job’s tolerance for interruption and the length of the commitment. The available evidence here does not establish current, comparable rate-card figures for AWS or Azure, or a full rate comparison across all alternatives; get a current configuration-specific quote before making a procurement decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if the exact GPU I need is out of stock?

Check other regions only if data location and latency requirements permit, and ask whether the provider can provision a different form factor or a smaller number of GPUs. Keep a tested second provider or fallback GPU configuration if the workload can run on it; do not assume a catalog listing means immediate capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether my model needs SXM rather than PCIe?

Start with the model’s memory and throughput needs, then measure performance on the exact form factor available to you. The listings distinguish form factors, but the price information alone does not establish which one your workload requires.

Should I commit to a cloud plan before benchmarking?

Avoid a long commitment until you have measured representative throughput, startup, recovery and data movement on the intended configuration. A rate that looks favorable can lose its advantage if the workload requires more capacity, incurs substantial idle time or performs poorly on that hardware.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
