Copywriting job adverts sampled in 2026 still treat strong writing as the core of the role, but they also ask for strategy, storytelling, stakeholder collaboration and ownership of results. AI is mentioned in 57.8% of them, and in most cases as a practical working tool rather than a specialist skill. The adverts show what employers said they wanted. They do not show whether AI has added or removed copywriting jobs.
What the sample covers
The figures come from The Modern Copywriter: What Employers Expect From Copywriters in 2026, published on 27 July 2026 by Jamie Thomson, founder of Brand New Copy. The report analyses 230 English-language job adverts collected in three separate 30-day periods between January and June 2026. The adverts were posted in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and France.
To qualify, an advert’s title had to include the word “copywriter.” Adjacent titles such as content manager, content strategist, marketing executive and social media manager were excluded, even where those jobs involve a lot of writing. Adverts were collected from LinkedIn, Indeed, Totaljobs, Campaign Jobs and Creativepool, then manually reviewed and deduplicated. The coding combined predefined variables with a qualitative reading of recurring language and themes.
Thomson describes job adverts as “one of the clearest public records of employer expectations.” That is the right frame for this data. It records what employers stated publicly, not how they hired, who they hired, or how the jobs performed afterwards. The report calls itself a snapshot and a baseline for later editions.

Is copywriting still primarily a writing role?
In the adverts, yes, in the sense that strong writing was described as foundational in every role in the sample. But writing was rarely the whole brief. Strategy, storytelling and collaboration appear alongside it often enough to change what the job looks like.
Strategy
59.1% of adverts mentioned strategy, slightly more often than AI. Employers linked it to messaging, positioning, campaign planning, customer journeys, audience research, content planning and performance optimisation. In practice, that means copy is expected to serve a stated business goal, not only to read well.
Storytelling
41% of adverts mentioned storytelling. The report associates it with brand communication, customer engagement, and explaining complex ideas through narrative. Storytelling appears as a method for making a message land, which is a different ask from producing polished sentences.

Stakeholder collaboration and complementary skills
Stakeholder collaboration appeared in 21% of adverts. The collaborators named include product, design, CRM, development, sales, legal and senior stakeholders. Adverts also asked for managing projects, keeping messaging consistent, and reviewing performance after publication.
The complementary capabilities most frequently requested were social media, research, brand and messaging, CRM and lifecycle marketing, project management and SEO. These are skills a copywriter is expected to work alongside, not replace. The adverts describe what was requested. They do not show how consistently those requirements were practised after hiring.
How often AI appears, and what for
57.8% of adverts mentioned AI. That makes it common but not universal: just over four in ten adverts in the sample did not mention it at all.

When AI did appear, the report says it was most often presented as a practical tool for:
- research
- ideation
- drafting
- workflow support
- productivity
- optimisation
Relatively few adverts asked for advanced AI expertise. The typical expectation was competent everyday use inside a process that a human still directs.
If you are comparing an employer’s AI expectations with this sample, four questions help:
Also popular on Amazon
- Which task is the AI meant to support: research, ideation, drafting, workflow or optimisation?
- Does the advert explicitly require advanced AI expertise, or only use of tools?
- Who owns the brief, the audience definition, the quality bar and the final communication?
- Does the advert treat AI as a route to higher productivity, or as a reason to change the role’s scope?
The last question is the one the adverts answer least directly. Mentions of productivity were common; statements that AI had changed a job’s scope were not part of the report’s findings.
Advertised pay: what the numbers can and cannot say
44.8% of adverts disclosed a salary. Among 28 comparable permanent, full-time roles that listed an annual salary, the average advertised figure was £36,875 and the median was £34,500. The gap between the two suggests a few higher advertised salaries pulled the average up.

How expectations change by seniority
The report sorts the adverts that specified a seniority level into three bands. More than half the sample did not state a level at all, so the pattern below describes the roles that did specify one, not the whole market.
| Level | What the adverts emphasise |
|---|---|
| Junior | Writing foundations, attention to detail, learning, and content production within existing frameworks |
| Mid-level | Independent project management, stakeholder collaboration, campaign planning and delivery ownership. This band showed the broadest range of requirements. |
| Senior | Strategic influence, editorial leadership, alignment with business objectives, and mentoring |
If you compare roles across these bands, the useful axes are: the balance between production and craft development; strategy and influence; independent ownership of projects; stakeholder collaboration; mentoring; and accountability for performance. The report describes these distinctions in the adverts. It does not present them as a universal career ladder.
What the adverts cannot tell you
- Job effects. An advert mentioning AI is not evidence that AI has created or eliminated copywriting jobs. The data cannot establish causal effects on employment in either direction.
- Actual AI use. A mention of AI in an advert does not measure how often copywriters use it, how much time it saves, or the quality of the output.
- Hiring outcomes. The report does not analyse who was hired, how quickly roles were filled, or whether candidates matched the stated criteria.
- Scope. Only English-language adverts with “copywriter” in the title from five markets were included. Adjacent roles with substantial writing are outside the sample.
- Coding. The percentages are the report’s own coding of the adverts. They have not been independently re-coded by anyone else.
What the evidence supports
The clearest change visible in these adverts is in the scope of the role rather than its headcount. Writing remains the entry requirement. Strategy, collaboration, storytelling and AI fluency are the layers employers added to it, and the weight given to each rises with seniority. Whether that shift translates into more or fewer copywriting jobs is a question these adverts cannot answer.
