VMC Game Labs opened a 15,000-square-foot testing lab in metropolitan Montreal in May 2006, according to a contemporaneous report by Data Center Knowledge. A few days later, Game Developer reported that the development and testing center was expected to create approximately 165 jobs—a projection, not a confirmed hiring total.

What VMC opened in Montreal

Data Center Knowledge reported on May 11, 2006, that VMC Game Labs had opened a 15,000-square-foot testing lab in metropolitan Montreal. The account described VMC’s work as testing and support for massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) and other online games.

Game Developer’s May 15, 2006, report described the site as a development and testing center. The two reports identify the location only as Montreal or metropolitan Montreal; neither gives a street address.

What services the facility was associated with

The opening coverage focused on testing and support for online games. Later company-reported context appears in Keywords Studios’ October 24, 2017, announcement of its planned acquisition of VMC. Keywords described VMC as providing video-game quality assurance (QA), player support, and other technical services, and identified secure labs in Montreal and Seattle. It also cited VMC’s crowd-based Global Beta Testing Network.

That 2017 announcement offers a broader picture of VMC’s services and Montreal presence, but it does not establish the eventual operating history of the specific lab opened in 2006.

How many jobs were expected

Game Developer reported that the center was expected to create approximately 165 jobs. The figure was an anticipated impact reported on May 15, 2006; it should not be read as a verified count of jobs ultimately created.

In the same report, VMC product-development head Steve Fowler credited local support in the decision to expand: “We received a warm welcome and unfailing support from our local partners, and that played a big part in our decision.”

What is known about the facility’s later status

The contemporaneous reports establish the opening, approximate metropolitan location, size, and stated purpose, but not the lab’s street address. The available accounts also do not establish whether the 2006 facility stayed at its original site or when it closed or moved.
