For opening a wide range of local audio and video files, VLC is the better default for most Windows users. Windows Media Player Legacy is a better fit if you want its built-in music-library tools, metadata and album art, audio-CD creation, or music transfer to a portable player. That is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim that one player is faster, more reliable, or easier to use in every setup.
How the players compare
| Need | VLC | Windows Media Player Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Play a variety of local formats | VideoLAN lists support for formats including MKV, MP4/MOV/3GP, AVI, ASF/WMV, FLAC, and MPEG, along with many audio and video codecs. See VLC’s published features. | Microsoft’s supported-format list is for Windows Media Player 12. Some formats may need additional codecs installed in Windows. See Microsoft’s format list. |
| Manage a music collection | The cited VLC feature information does not establish the same bundled library workflow described for WMP Legacy. | Microsoft lists media-library and playlist management, metadata such as album art, audio-CD creation, and music transfer to portable players. |
| Play discs | VideoLAN lists DVD, Video CD, Super Video CD, and Audio CD input. | DVD playback is not included. Microsoft documents audio-CD playback. |
| Availability on Windows | VideoLAN lists VLC 3.0.23 for Windows and says the build runs from Windows XP SP3 through the latest Windows 11. Check VideoLAN’s Windows download page for its current listing. | WMP Legacy is an optional Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature, with availability depending on edition. Windows N editions omit Windows Media Player and related components unless the Media Feature Pack is installed. |
Choose VLC for broad file compatibility
VLC is the more practical starting point when you want one player to open a varied collection without first checking whether each format is supported by the Windows player. VideoLAN describes VLC as a “free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework” and lists support for many containers, formats, and codecs.
A file extension does not tell the whole story: a container such as MP4 can hold video or audio encoded in different ways. As a result, a file that shares an extension with a supported format may still depend on the codec inside it. Microsoft’s list applies specifically to Windows Media Player 12, and notes that installing additional codecs can extend format support. It also describes a particular MPEG-2 program-stream limitation when an additional MPEG-2 video decoder is not installed; that condition should not be treated as a blanket statement about every file or Windows configuration. Microsoft’s supported file-type guidance explains the scope.
Choose Windows Media Player Legacy for its music-library workflow
WMP Legacy may suit you better if your local-media routine centers on organizing music rather than opening a broad range of video formats. Microsoft describes tools for managing a media library and playlists, displaying metadata such as album art, creating audio CDs, and transferring music to portable players. Those bundled functions are its clearest advantage in this comparison.

Whether that workflow is preferable depends on how you organize and listen to your collection. If you are undecided, try the players with your own library and controls rather than assuming one interface is universally easier.
DVD support and newer video features are separate questions
VLC’s feature list includes DVD input. Microsoft explicitly says, “DVD playback isn’t included” in WMP Legacy. If DVD playback is a requirement, that distinction matters; ordinary local-file playback does not require a disc drive.

Do not confuse WMP Legacy with Windows’ newer Media Player app. Microsoft recommends the newer app for modern video features such as 4K. That recommendation is about the newer app, not a capability of WMP Legacy. Microsoft’s WMP Legacy guidance covers its availability and this distinction.
Check whether WMP Legacy is available in your Windows edition
WMP Legacy may need to be enabled as an optional feature in Windows 10 or 11, and availability varies by edition. Windows N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media components; Microsoft says to install the Media Feature Pack to restore the omitted functionality. Consult Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance for Windows 10/11 N if you use an N edition.
