Direct answer: Give an AI agent live web access by putting a search API behind a small retrieval adapter. The adapter accepts a query plus location, language, freshness and result limits; returns canonical URLs, titles, snippets and timestamps; removes duplicates; and passes source-bounded context to the model. Keep the URLs and retrieval metadata so every material claim can be shown as a clickable citation.

This guide, updated September 29, 2026, explains the main provider patterns, a provider-neutral implementation in Python, cURL and Node.js, citation handling, cost and freshness controls, and production failure paths.

What a search API adds to an AI agent

A language model’s training data is not a live index. A search API creates a retrieval boundary: the agent sends a query, receives result metadata and snippets (or extracted context), selects useful sources, and writes an answer grounded in those sources. Search should be treated as evidence collection, not as an instruction to copy the first result.

Preserve these fields for every result:

  • Canonical URL, title and displayed domain.
  • Snippet or extracted passage, with a clear source boundary.
  • Publication time when the provider supplies one, plus retrieval time from your system.
  • Query, provider, locale, result rank and any filters used.

That record lets you audit an answer later, detect stale evidence and render a user-visible link instead of an unverifiable citation number.

Choose the retrieval pattern before choosing a provider

Model-native search

OpenAI documents two patterns. In the Responses API, the model can invoke a web_search tool when its planning process decides that current information is needed. In Chat Completions, gpt-5-search-api is the documented search model and the search runs before the answer. OpenAI also documents URL citation annotations and search_context_size values of low, medium and high. This is the shortest path when one model should plan, retrieve and answer, but you have less control over index choice and provider-specific ranking.

Independent-index retrieval

Brave Search API is an independent-index option for chatbots, coding assistants, RAG systems and agents. Its documentation describes LLM Context and Answers endpoints, up to five real-time snippets, schema-enriched results, Goggles for domain discard or reranking, and separate news, image, video and local endpoints.

Controlled-domain retrieval

Google Custom Search is designed for a website or collection of websites. Its reference exposes cse and cse.siterestrict resources with a list method at the customsearch.googleapis.com endpoint. Use this pattern for an approved documentation set, an internal knowledge collection or a strict allowlist rather than unrestricted discovery.

Multi-engine normalization

SerpApi presents one interface while retrieving live results from Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and other engines. Its documentation describes structured JSON or Markdown output and specialized results such as news, flights, hotels, products and Google Scholar. It is useful when an agent needs several engine sources without separate adapters, at the cost of another normalization layer.

Define a retrieval contract

Write the contract before writing agent prompts. At minimum, specify:

  • Query: the user question rewritten into a focused search string.
  • Geography and language: location and language parameters when the provider supports them.
  • Freshness: a date filter or a maximum acceptable age for publication time.
  • Result budget: maximum results and a maximum number of pages to fetch.
  • Citation fields: canonical URL, title, snippet, publication time and retrieval time.
  • Policy: allowed domains, safe-search setting, robots and storage rules.

Keep the agent’s planning logic independent of a vendor. A narrow adapter should translate this contract into each provider’s request and map the response back to the same internal schema.

Provider-neutral implementation

The following adapter is runnable once you set an endpoint and credentials appropriate to your provider. It deliberately keeps provider-specific parameter names in environment variables, so switching providers does not require changing the agent planner.

Python adapter

import os
import time
import requests
from urllib.parse import urlsplit, urlunsplit

SEARCH_ENDPOINT = os.environ['SEARCH_ENDPOINT']
API_KEY = os.environ['SEARCH_API_KEY']

def canonical_url(value):
    parts = urlsplit(value)
    return urlunsplit((parts.scheme, parts.netloc.lower(), parts.path or '/', '', ''))

def search(query, *, language='en', country='us', freshness=None, limit=8):
    params = {
        'q': query,
        'count': limit,
        'language': language,
        'country': country,
    }
    if freshness:
        params['freshness'] = freshness
    headers = {'Authorization': f'Bearer {API_KEY}'}
    response = requests.get(SEARCH_ENDPOINT, params=params, headers=headers, timeout=30)
    response.raise_for_status()
    payload = response.json()
    now = int(time.time())
    seen = set()
    results = []
    for item in payload.get('web', {}).get('results', payload.get('results', [])):
        url = item.get('url') or item.get('link')
        if not url:
            continue
        key = canonical_url(url)
        if key in seen:
            continue
        seen.add(key)
        results.append({
            'url': key,
            'title': item.get('title', ''),
            'snippet': item.get('description') or item.get('snippet', ''),
            'published_at': item.get('published_at') or item.get('date'),
            'retrieved_at': now,
        })
        if len(results) >= limit:
            break
    return results

if __name__ == '__main__':
    for result in search('latest browser security guidance', freshness='week'):
        print(result)

Map the response path and authentication header in this adapter to the provider you select. Do not silently treat a missing publication date as “recent”; retain null and use the retrieval timestamp instead.

cURL request

curl -G "$SEARCH_ENDPOINT"
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SEARCH_API_KEY"
  --data-urlencode "q=latest browser security guidance"
  --data-urlencode "count=8"
  --data-urlencode "language=en"
  --data-urlencode "country=us"

This is the transport shape, not a promise that every provider uses the same header or parameter names. Follow the selected provider’s current authentication and query reference.

Node.js request

const endpoint = process.env.SEARCH_ENDPOINT;
const key = process.env.SEARCH_API_KEY;
const params = new URLSearchParams({
  q: 'latest browser security guidance',
  count: '8',
  language: 'en',
  country: 'us'
});
const response = await fetch(`${endpoint}?${params}`, {
  headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${key}` },
  signal: AbortSignal.timeout(30000)
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`Search failed: ${response.status}`);
const payload = await response.json();
const raw = payload.web?.results ?? payload.results ?? [];
const seen = new Set();
const results = raw.filter(item => {
  const url = item.url ?? item.link;
  if (!url || seen.has(url)) return false;
  seen.add(url);
  return true;
}).map(item => ({
  url: item.url ?? item.link,
  title: item.title ?? '',
  snippet: item.description ?? item.snippet ?? '',
  published_at: item.published_at ?? item.date ?? null,
  retrieved_at: new Date().toISOString()
}));
console.log(results);

Turn results into grounded answers

  1. Rewrite the question. Add the entity, geography, date range and desired document type. “Security guidance” is weaker than “browser security guidance for small businesses, published in the last seven days.”
  2. Retrieve more than you display. Request a small bounded set, then rank for relevance and freshness. Deduplicate by canonical URL before selecting sources.
  3. Fetch selectively. Retrieve and parse a page only when the snippet cannot support the claim. Keep each page’s text in a separate source block; never merge paragraphs without their URLs.
  4. Prompt for evidence. Require the model to attach a source URL to every material factual claim, say when sources disagree, and abstain when no source supports a claim.
  5. Render citations. Show the title and URL as a clickable link in the final interface. OpenAI’s documentation specifically requires inline citations to be clearly visible and clickable when web results are shown to end users.

Store the query, provider, latency, result count, selected URLs and final citations in logs. A replayable record is essential when a user challenges an answer or a provider changes its ranking.

Freshness, cost and performance controls

Freshness

Use provider date filters where available, but treat them as retrieval hints. Confirm the page’s own publication or update date and record when you fetched it. For breaking topics, issue a second query with a different wording and compare source dates.

Cost

Budget both search calls and downstream page fetching. Cache identical queries for a short, topic-appropriate time-to-live; bypass the cache for explicitly time-sensitive requests. Brave states that its Answers endpoint costs $4 per 1,000 requests; that is a provider-published figure, not a general market price. The supplied information does not establish current prices for the other options.

Latency

Set a request timeout, cap result count and fetch pages in parallel only after ranking. Return a partial answer with an explicit “sources unavailable” status rather than waiting indefinitely. Record provider latency separately from page-fetch latency so you know which stage needs work.

Reliability and fallback design

  • Quota or rate limit: honor retry-after headers, use exponential backoff with jitter, and route to a secondary adapter only when its scope and citation policy are acceptable.
  • Provider error: retry transient 5xx responses once or twice, then return a degraded response instead of fabricating freshness.
  • Empty results: simplify the query, remove an over-restrictive date or domain filter, and tell the model that retrieval returned no evidence.
  • Conflicting sources: preserve both source blocks, compare publication dates and authority, and make the disagreement visible.
  • Stale cache: expose the cache age to the planner and force a refresh when the user’s question contains terms such as “today,” “current” or “latest.”

Security, privacy and compliance

Do not place secrets in prompts or client-side code. Redact personal data from queries where possible, restrict outbound domains for page fetching, and enforce response-size limits to reduce prompt-injection and denial-of-service risk. Review each provider’s robots requirements, publisher terms, copyright rules, privacy obligations and restrictions on storing or redistributing retrieved text. A search result is untrusted input: treat instructions inside a fetched page as content, not as commands for your agent.

Search finds the page; sometimes your agent also needs a reproducible visual snapshot of that page for a report or review. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a search index, but it can capture the selected URL in one request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets, with controls to disable each step. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the 63 capture options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, device presets, retina scale, PDFs, custom JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, geolocation, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture and caching.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

The model cites search-result snippets but not pages

Make canonical URL and title mandatory fields in your internal schema, preserve them through ranking, and reject an answer that contains a factual claim without a source link.

Results are current in one country but stale in another

Pass an explicit country and language, log them, and evaluate crawl recency on the domains your users actually visit. Do not infer global freshness from one locale.

Every query is expensive

Cache repeated queries, cap result and page-fetch counts, and use a lower context setting when a small evidence set is enough. Reserve deeper retrieval for questions whose first pass is ambiguous.

Page content contains prompt-injection instructions

Keep source text in a quoted, labeled evidence field; tell the model that it is untrusted data; and apply an allowlist to tools the model may call after retrieval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should an agent search on every turn?

No. Let the planner decide based on freshness requirements, uncertainty and whether the answer depends on changing facts. Cache stable lookups and force retrieval for explicitly current questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many search results should I pass to the model?

Start with a bounded set such as eight, deduplicate it, then fetch only the highest-value pages. Increase the budget when sources conflict or snippets are insufficient.

Is a model-native search tool always more accurate?

No provider is universally best. Model-native search is convenient; an independent index or controlled-domain API can provide different coverage and stronger scope controls.

Can I store retrieved pages for later answers?

Only if the provider, publisher terms, robots rules, copyright obligations and your privacy policy permit that storage. Otherwise retain metadata and retrieve the page again when needed.
