Event-Driven Ansible can respond to web-application alerts by receiving an event, checking it against a rulebook condition, and running a targeted playbook or module. For a simple integration, an application or monitoring service sends a JSON POST to the eda.builtin.webhook event source. A webhook is only the ingestion point: the rulebook defines which alerts matter and what action follows.
How Event-Driven Ansible monitoring works
An event-driven workflow has three parts: an event source that supplies events, a YAML rulebook that evaluates them, and an action that runs when a rule matches. An action can launch a playbook or module, or post another event. The Ansible Rulebook introduction describes codifying operational knowledge to remediate technology issues near real time: Ansible Rulebook documentation.
- Generate an alert: Your application, uptime checker, reverse proxy, observability platform, or incident system detects a condition and sends a JSON event.
- Ingest it: The rulebook listens with
eda.builtin.webhookwhen the producer can push HTTP events. - Prepare the payload: Filters can split alert arrays into individual events, remove unneeded JSON fields, or normalize inconsistent key names.
- Evaluate conditions: Rules match deliberate fields such as service, environment, status, and severity.
- Take a bounded action: A match can run a focused playbook or module, ideally beginning with an information-gathering or dry-run step before any disruptive change.
Event source plugins generate the events that trigger rule evaluation. The source does not itself decide whether an alert warrants remediation; that decision belongs in the rulebook.
Choose the right event source
The best integration depends on how the monitoring system can deliver events and how much delivery assurance the response requires. Ansible’s event-source guidance distinguishes event-bus, callback, and scraper plugins, and describes managed Event Streams as an option for reliability and security needs: Event sources.

| Pattern | Use it when | Delivery and operational considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Event-bus plugin | The monitoring system can publish to a supported event bus, especially for reliable or high-volume delivery. | Choose based on the bus and plugin’s delivery guarantees; the event-source guide identifies this pattern for reliable or high-volume delivery. |
| Callback plugin such as a webhook | The producer can push HTTP events but does not publish through an event bus. | A callback endpoint may lose events while unavailable and generally has no built-in retry. It also needs network and authorization controls. |
| Scraper plugin | Polling is the only available integration. | The rulebook side must poll the source, so response timing and load depend on the polling integration and its configuration. |
| Ansible Automation Platform Event Streams | You need a managed production-oriented option with stronger delivery and security controls. | Consult current Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform documentation for packaging, support, and commercial terms applicable to your environment. |
Compare the options against delivery durability, retry and duplicate behavior, security controls, operating overhead, event volume, latency, and whether the producer can push events. A direct webhook is convenient when push-only HTTP is the constraint; it is not automatically the best choice for alerts that must not be lost.
Design webhook rules that act only on real incidents
Make rule conditions explicit enough to exclude test traffic, resolved notifications, unrelated services, and low-severity alerts. A rule based only on a generic field such as status can respond to the wrong event if the producer’s payload is inconsistent or the condition is too broad.

Cloud Services allows remote management of devices at all locations as well as heartbeat monitoring of your Keep Connects to notify you in the event of an ISP internet outage at one of your sites.
- Match service and environment as well as status or severity.
- Use the event identifier to track repeated deliveries and avoid repeating a change for the same alert.
- Assume duplicate notifications can arrive; make playbooks idempotent so repeated execution leaves the system in the intended state.
- Start with an information-gathering or dry-run action, then require sufficiently specific conditions before allowing disruptive remediation.
- Use filters to split batches and normalize fields before the rules evaluate them.
These are operational safeguards for the documented conditional-action model and webhook delivery limitations; they are not a guarantee that a given monitoring vendor sends unique or ordered events.
Secure the webhook and constrain remediation
Treat the endpoint as an authenticated automation interface, not a public alert inbox. The webhook event source supports bearer-token or HMAC verification, and TLS can be configured with certificate, key, and CA files. The event-source documentation covers the available controls and configuration: Webhook event source security.

- (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
- The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
- Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
- Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
- 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.
- Require an appropriate bearer token or validate the producer’s HMAC signature.
- Use TLS and configure certificate trust appropriately for the deployment.
- Restrict network ingress to the monitoring producer or trusted intermediary; authentication does not replace network policy.
- Limit which rules can run which actions, and scope playbook credentials and inventory permissions to the required work.
- Do not let an alert choose an unrestricted target host or arbitrary action.
When an event identifies a machine, host metadata can be used to limit a remediation playbook to that host, provided it belongs to the inventory selected by the rule. See the rulebook documentation on event metadata for the inventory and host-targeting behavior.
Account for missed events, duplicates, and state
A direct callback endpoint depends on being available when the producer sends the event. The event-source guide warns that callback plugins can lose events if unavailable and generally do not provide built-in retries. If the alerting system can retry, make repeated delivery safe; if the incident must be durable, use an integration designed for delivery assurance rather than assuming the webhook will buffer events.

Persistence also matters when a workflow needs feedback or retained state: EDA server persistence is tied to feedback availability in the documented event-source guidance. Plan persistence and recovery around the operational behavior you need, rather than treating a successful HTTP response as proof that the full remediation completed.

You can run ansible-rulebook directly to validate a rulebook and event flow. In a managed controller workflow, a rulebook activation is an object whose creation, deletion, and restart can be managed with the ansible.eda.rulebook_activation module. That module belongs to the ansible.eda collection, not ansible-core; see the rulebook_activation module documentation.

Direct execution is useful for a controlled proof of concept, but production operations need a plan for activation lifecycle, credentials, network exposure, monitoring, event persistence, and recovery. For delivery and security requirements beyond a basic push endpoint, evaluate Ansible Automation Platform Event Streams and confirm current platform packaging and support for your deployment.
Quick Recap
A practical rollout sequence
- Choose one alert with a clear operational meaning, such as an unavailable production service, and define its exact payload fields.
- Decide whether the source should push a webhook, publish to an event bus, or be polled by a scraper; use managed Event Streams when the needed delivery and security controls call for it.
- Configure authentication, TLS, ingress restrictions, and a least-privilege execution identity before exposing the endpoint.
- Build filters and explicit conditions, then initially route matched events to a harmless information-gathering action.
- Test test, resolved, duplicate, malformed, and unrelated events to confirm they do not trigger remediation.
- Enable the smallest corrective action only after confirming target inventory scope, idempotency, and a recovery path.
- Operate the rulebook as an activation where appropriate, and monitor both the incoming event path and the resulting action rather than relying on the sender’s HTTP response alone.
