USB-C and USB-A are connector types, not speed ratings. USB-C is the smaller, reversible connector now common on phones, tablets, laptops, monitors, chargers, and docks. USB-A is the older, flat rectangular connector still found on many computers, keyboards, mice, printers, flash drives, chargers, and hubs.
The connector shape tells you how a cable fits. It does not tell you the connection’s data speed, charging power, or video capability. A USB-C port can be USB 2.0-only, while a USB-A port can support USB 10Gbps. Check the specifications for the port, device, and cable before assuming what a connection can do.

What is USB-C?
USB-C, formally USB Type-C, is a compact connector with a symmetrical plug. You can insert it either way around, which is its most obvious advantage over USB-A.
The connector has additional contacts and a design that can support several functions, including:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- USB 2.0, USB 3.2, or USB4 data connections
- USB Power Delivery charging
- DisplayPort Alternate Mode for compatible monitors and adapters
- Reversible power roles, allowing devices to negotiate which one supplies power
- Docking and other combinations of data, charging, and display signals
Those capabilities are optional. A manufacturer can include a USB-C port that handles only USB 2.0 data and basic charging. The USB-C shape alone does not promise fast file transfers, laptop charging, or display output.
What is USB-A?
USB-A is the familiar rectangular connector used on the host side of many older USB connections. It is common on desktop and laptop computers, wall chargers, game consoles, hubs, keyboards, mice, printers, and older external drives.
USB-A plugs are not reversible. If the plug does not fit, rotating it 180 degrees usually solves the problem, although the connector’s narrow internal shape can make this less obvious than it should be.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →USB-A is also not a speed standard. Depending on the hardware, a USB-A port may provide USB 2.0, USB 5Gbps, or USB 10Gbps. A blue USB-A socket often indicates USB 3.x, but color conventions are not guaranteed. Use the computer or accessory’s specifications rather than relying on color.
USB-C does not automatically mean faster
USB-C describes the connector. USB 3.2 and USB4 describe data technologies that may use that connector. These are separate things.
For example, a USB-C port might be:
- USB 2.0: up to 480 Mbps in the specification, often used on inexpensive charging cables and some phones.
- USB 5Gbps: the consumer-facing name for what was previously called USB 3.2 Gen 1.
- USB 10Gbps: formerly USB 3.2 Gen 2.
- USB 20Gbps: formerly USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, where supported.
- USB4: available in 20Gbps, 40Gbps, and newer 80Gbps implementations on compatible products and cables.
The connection normally runs at the slowest capability shared by the computer, device, and cable. A 20Gbps external SSD connected through a 5Gbps port or cable will operate at no more than the lower rate. Real file-copy speeds are lower still because of protocol overhead, storage performance, hubs, and other devices sharing the connection.

Charging: USB-C has more potential, but no guarantee
USB-C can support USB Power Delivery, commonly called USB PD. USB PD allows the charger and device to negotiate an appropriate voltage and current. With USB PD 3.1 and compatible hardware, USB-C can support up to 240W.
That maximum applies only when the charger, device, cable, and port all support the required power level. A USB-C phone cable, laptop charger, and gaming laptop may all use the same connector while supporting very different wattages.
USB-A can charge phones, headphones, controllers, and other devices, but its available power depends on the charger, port, USB Battery Charging support, and sometimes a manufacturer-specific charging system. You cannot determine the wattage from the USB-A shape alone.
Video output is another USB-C feature that must be supported
Some USB-C ports can send video through DisplayPort Alternate Mode. This is why a laptop may connect to a monitor using a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or a suitable USB-C dock.
Not every USB-C port supports video. One port on a laptop may provide charging and data only, while another supports charging, high-speed data, DisplayPort, USB4, or Thunderbolt. Look for a DisplayPort symbol, a Thunderbolt symbol, or the manufacturer’s port specifications.

A normal passive USB-A-to-HDMI or USB-A-to-DisplayPort adapter cannot turn USB-A into a native video output. USB-A video adapters that work generally use an active technology such as DisplayLink and may require software and compatible drivers.

The cable can be the limiting part
Even when both devices have capable USB-C ports, the cable may restrict the connection. USB-C cables can differ in:
- Data speed
- Power rating
- USB Power Delivery support
- Video or Alternate Mode support
- Passive or active construction
A USB-C-to-USB-C cable wired only for USB 2.0 can charge a device and transfer basic data, but it cannot provide USB 3.x, USB4, or USB-C video Alternate Modes. This is a common reason an external SSD is unexpectedly slow or a USB-C monitor fails to display an image.
When shopping, prefer explicit labels such as USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB4 40Gbps, USB4 80Gbps, 60W, 240W, or DisplayPort support. “USB-C cable” by itself is incomplete information.
What happens with a USB-C-to-USB-A cable?
A USB-C-to-USB-A cable is useful for connecting a newer phone, controller, drive, or accessory to an older computer or charger. However, the USB-A end limits what the connection can do.
- It cannot provide USB4, because USB4 uses USB-C connections.
- Its maximum speed is limited by the USB-A port, cable, and connected device.
- Charging power may be lower than with a USB-C Power Delivery charger and USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
- A normal USB-A port cannot provide USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode.
The cable does not upgrade the USB-A port. If the computer has a USB 5Gbps USB-A port, attaching a USB-C SSD through that port does not make the connection 10Gbps or USB4.
How to choose the right cable or adapter
- Identify the host port. Check whether the computer, charger, or dock has USB-A or USB-C and find its stated USB speed and charging output.
- Identify the accessory port. Note whether the drive, phone, monitor, or peripheral uses USB-C, USB-A, Micro-USB, or another connector.
- Define the job. Decide whether you need file transfer, charging, video, docking, or all four.
- Check the cable rating. Confirm its data speed, power rating, and video support. Do not buy solely based on the connector shape.
- Check every adapter in the chain. A dock, hub, or dongle can impose its own speed, power, or display limitations.
Common USB-C and USB-A problems
“The USB-C drive fits, but it is slow”
Either the cable or one of the ports may be USB 2.0-only. Replace the cable with one explicitly rated for the speed you need and verify the computer’s port specification.

- TURN USB-A PORTS INTO USB-C: Convert the USB-A ports on your laptops, wall chargers, car chargers, hubs, or power banks into USB-C inputs for everyday charging and data transfer. Just plug the adapter into a USB-A port and connect your USB-C cable to charge or sync compatible devices.
- DESIGNED FOR USB 2.0 CHARGING & SYNC (NO VIDEO): Supports USB 2.0 data transfer up to 480 Mbps and charging up to 5V/2A, depending on your USB-A power source. Not for HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, or any other type of video output, and not for driving a dock’s main USB-C host cable or high-power USB-C fast-charging protocols (PD/PPS).
- ALUMINUM ALLOY HOUSING: Built with an aluminum alloy shell that helps with heat dissipation during use compared to plastic adapters. The metal body surrounds the internal USB 2.0 components and supports stable charging and data transfer during everyday plug-in, unplugging, and device connections.
- COMPACT ENOUGH TO LEAVE PLUGGED IN: Low-profile, lightweight design that sits close to the USB-A port, so it can stay plugged into your laptop, charger, or hub without getting in the way. Reduces wear from constant plugging/unplugging and lowers the chance of misplacing the adapter.
- VERSATILE USB-C ACCESSORY COMPATIBILITY: Works with USB-C cables, phones, tablets, earphones, flash drives, card readers, wireless adapters, and other low-power USB-C accessories. A simple, practical add-on to keep your older USB-A gear useful in a USB-C world.
“My USB-C monitor does not work”
The computer’s USB-C port may not support DisplayPort Alternate Mode. The cable or adapter may also lack the required capability. Connect directly to a confirmed video-capable port before troubleshooting the monitor itself.

The charger may not support USB Power Delivery, may provide too few watts, or may be paired with a cable whose power rating is insufficient. Compare the laptop’s required wattage with the charger’s USB PD output.
“One USB-C cable works, but another does not”
USB-C cables are not identical. One may be charging-focused or USB 2.0-only, while the other includes the conductors and electronics needed for high-speed data or video.
“The adapter works in one USB-C port but not another”
Ports on the same laptop can have different capabilities. Check each port’s icons and the manufacturer’s specifications; do not assume every USB-C socket supports the same functions.

FAQ
Is USB-C faster than USB-A?
Not necessarily. Both connector types can support different USB generations. A USB-C port may be USB 2.0-only, while a USB-A port may support USB 10Gbps. Compare the rated speed of the port, device, and cable.
Can I charge a laptop through USB-A?
Some laptops can receive limited power through USB-A accessories or proprietary systems, but USB-A generally does not provide the flexible high-power USB Power Delivery options available through compatible USB-C connections. Check the laptop and charger specifications.
Can any USB-C cable connect a monitor?
No. The USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode or another compatible display feature, and the cable or adapter must support the required signal. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video.

Does a blue USB-A port mean it is USB 3.0?
Often, but not always. Blue is commonly used to indicate USB 3.x, yet manufacturers do not apply the color consistently. Check the port’s documented speed instead.
The Bottom Line
USB-C and USB-A identify connector shapes, not performance levels. USB-C is smaller, reversible, and capable of features such as USB Power Delivery, USB4, and DisplayPort Alternate Mode—but only when the specific port and cable support them. USB-A is older and less versatile, but it can still provide respectable USB 3.x speeds. Before buying a cable or adapter, verify the data rate, power rating, and video support for every part of the connection.
