Windows 11 gives you several ways to control Bluetooth. For a quick change, use Quick Settings. For a more reliable path, use the Settings app. Airplane mode disables Bluetooth together with other wireless connections, while Device Manager disables the Bluetooth adapter itself.

Use the first two methods for normal day-to-day switching. Choose Device Manager when you need to prevent Windows from using the Bluetooth hardware entirely.

Method 1: Turn Bluetooth on or off from Quick Settings

Quick Settings is the fastest way to change Bluetooth’s normal operating state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the Network, Sound, or Battery icon beside the clock on the taskbar. You can also press Windows + A.
  2. Select the Bluetooth tile.

When Bluetooth is enabled, the tile may show Connected, Not connected, or the name of a connected accessory. Not connected does not mean Bluetooth is off—it means Bluetooth is enabled but no Bluetooth accessory is currently connected.

Current Windows 11 versions use a scrollable Quick Settings panel. Scroll through the available actions if Bluetooth is not immediately visible. You can also drag quick actions to rearrange them.

If Bluetooth is not available anywhere in Quick Settings, Windows may not be detecting a Bluetooth adapter, or its driver may be missing. Check Device Manager as described in Method 4.

From Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Network & internet.
  3. Select Airplane mode.
  4. Switch Airplane mode to On or Off.

Why Bluetooth may turn back on after Airplane mode

Windows remembers the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi states from before Airplane mode was enabled. When you turn Airplane mode off, it can restore those previous states.

If Bluetooth must remain off after leaving Airplane mode, enable Airplane mode first, then turn Bluetooth off while Airplane mode is active. Windows will then have an off state to restore.

Method 4: Disable the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager

Device Manager does more than switch Bluetooth off in the Windows interface. Its Disable device command disables the Bluetooth adapter itself, making it unavailable to Windows until you enable it again.

What to do if Bluetooth will not turn on

If the Bluetooth switch is missing from Settings or Bluetooth does not appear in Quick Settings, Windows may not currently detect the feature. Common causes include a missing adapter, a missing or incompatible driver, faulty Bluetooth hardware, or a problem introduced by an update.

  1. Open the Get Help app and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter.
  2. Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
  3. Expand Bluetooth.
  4. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select Update driver.
  5. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart the PC if Windows requests it.
  7. If Windows cannot find a driver, download the current Bluetooth driver from your PC manufacturer or Bluetooth adapter manufacturer.

If the Bluetooth category is missing from Device Manager, check your computer’s specifications. The PC may not have built-in Bluetooth, or the adapter may not be detected. A laptop’s physical wireless switch or manufacturer-specific function key can also disable wireless hardware, but the key combination differs by model.

Do not uninstall the driver just to turn Bluetooth off

Uninstall device is not a normal Bluetooth on/off method. Driver removal is a troubleshooting step used to repair detection or driver problems, and Windows may reinstall the device after a restart.

For a normal switch, use Quick Settings or Settings. If you need to make the adapter unavailable, use Device Manager > Disable device.

Turning Bluetooth off does not remove paired devices

Disabling Bluetooth does not erase saved pairing records. Paired keyboards, mice, headphones, and other accessories can remain listed in Settings > Bluetooth & devices.

When Bluetooth is enabled again, a previously paired accessory may reconnect automatically if it is switched on and within range. To remove a saved device, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices, select the device’s three-dot menu, and choose Remove device.
