ScreenshotNeo is the best first choice when you need dependable website images from an API: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only for clean shots, and starts with 1,000 free screenshots per month. For code-controlled browser automation, Playwright remains the strongest starting point; Playwright Test, Chromatic and BrowserStack Percy add increasingly managed visual-regression workflows. Applitools Eyes is a further option when an existing test stack needs broad browser and device coverage.
This is an editorial shortlist based on current product documentation, not a hands-on benchmark. There is no defensible universal winner: the right choice depends on whether you need an image, a local assertion, or hosted review of visual changes.
Choose by the job you need done
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A clean image from a URL or API workflow | ScreenshotNeo | Hosted capture with consent and widget removal, usage headers, and an MCP server for AI agents. |
| Code-controlled viewport, element or full-page capture | Playwright | Browser automation APIs support PNG, JPEG and WebP output. |
| Local visual assertions in the same test runner | Playwright Test | Creates a reference image first, then compares later runs. |
| Cloud review attached to Playwright tests | Chromatic for Playwright | Uploads interactive snapshots and provides cloud pixel-diff review. |
| Hosted browser and responsive-width coverage | BrowserStack Percy | Its documented screenshot unit is each page or component rendered in one browser and responsive-width combination. |
Capture utilities produce an image. Visual-regression platforms additionally manage baselines, diffs and review decisions. Treat those as related but different jobs.
The five tools and who they suit
1. ScreenshotNeo — clean, billable-only API capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

Common screenshot-API parameter names also work when switching.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Playwright — best starting point for browser automation
Playwright is the practical choice when your team already drives a browser in code. Its documented screenshot interface captures the viewport, a target element or the full scrollable page and writes PNG, JPEG or WebP files. You can control viewport and device-pixel settings, making it suitable for deterministic build artifacts as well as ad-hoc captures. See the official screenshot documentation for current syntax and options.
3. Playwright Test visual comparisons — local assertions with your tests
Playwright Test adds visual assertions to the same runner. The first run creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare against it. Playwright warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware and headless mode can change rendering. Keep baseline and test environments consistent, and stabilize dynamic content before approving a reference. The workflow is local and CI-friendly, but it does not by itself provide a hosted review service.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)

4. Chromatic for Playwright — hosted snapshot review
Chromatic connects Playwright end-to-end tests to a hosted workflow. During tests it captures interactive snapshots, uploads an archive to its cloud, creates snapshots and runs pixel diffs. Choose it when reviewers need a shared place to inspect visual changes rather than downloading local artifacts. Its value is the hosted review layer attached to Playwright, not a replacement for browser automation.
5. BrowserStack Percy — hosted matrix coverage
Percy is aimed at teams that want visual testing and review across browser and responsive-width combinations. BrowserStack’s documentation defines one screenshot as a page or component render in one individual browser and responsive-width combination, so adding widths and browsers multiplies usage. Its current documentation states that the free plan includes 5,000 screenshots per month, unlimited users and unlimited projects; this allowance can change, so verify the live plan page before committing.

Where Applitools Eyes fits
Applitools Eyes is worth evaluating when visual checks must join an existing framework and browser/device coverage is central. Applitools documents integrations including Playwright, Cypress, Selenium and Appium and describes its Ultrafast Grid. Statements about AI accuracy are vendor claims, not independent measurements, so validate them against your own pages and tolerance for false positives.
How to compare screenshot tools
Capture target
Confirm whether you need the viewport, one element or the entire scrollable page. Playwright documents all three; hosted APIs may additionally offer PDFs, HTML rendering and post-load interactions.
