Choose the OnePlus 15R for performance and battery, the Galaxy A57 for Samsung and a large display, the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro for design and zoom, the POCO X8 Pro Max for gaming value, or the iPhone 17e for iOS and video.
What is the best midrange smartphone for 2026?
For most people, the Google Pixel 10a is the best midrange phone to buy in 2026. It combines excellent point-and-shoot photography, a relatively compact 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED display, IP68 protection, wireless charging and seven years of operating-system, security and Pixel Drop updates.
It is not the fastest phone in this group. If gaming performance, charging speed and battery endurance matter more than camera quality or long-term software support, choose the OnePlus 15R. The Samsung Galaxy A57 5G is the better choice for a large screen and the Samsung ecosystem, while the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro offers the most distinctive design and the most useful zoom camera. For maximum gaming and battery value, consider the POCO X8 Pro Max. iPhone buyers should look at the iPhone 17e.
This guide reflects information and prices available on 10 August 2026. Prices, stock, regional configurations and software availability can change quickly. Google has scheduled its Pixel 11 launch event for 12 August 2026, so check this guide again after that announcement before buying a Pixel 10a.

What counts as a midrange phone?
“Midrange” is not a global specification or price category. For this comparison, it means a new, unlocked phone costing approximately $400–$700 in the US or £300–£700 in the UK, with equivalent local pricing elsewhere. That definition includes some premium-midrange models that approach entry-level flagship prices.
Different guides use different boundaries. Tech Advisor tests phones from roughly $300 to $700, while PhoneArena uses a broader range of approximately $400–$800. This is why a $299 budget phone and a £649 OnePlus 15R sometimes appear in the same online ranking even though they target very different buyers.
#1 Best Overall
- Universal unlocked. Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.
- Super-bright, super-smooth 6.7" display. See your screen clearly even outdoors in sunlight, and enjoy seamless views with a fast-refreshing 120Hz display.*
- AI-powered camera system. Take stunning photos in any light with the 50MP camera**, look your best with a 32MP selfie cam*****, and capture extreme close-ups.
- Superfast 5G performance. Unleash your entertainment at 5G speed*** with the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset and up to 12GB of RAM with RAM Boost****.
- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****
Phones below roughly $350 should usually be judged in a separate budget category. They can be excellent value, but mixing them directly with premium-midrange phones makes the ranking misleading. Storage also matters: compare 128GB with 128GB, or 256GB with 256GB. A cheaper 128GB phone may be poor value if you shoot 4K video, download large games or plan to keep it for four years.
Best overall: Google Pixel 10a
The Pixel 10a is the safest recommendation for the average buyer. Its advantage is not raw hardware; it is the consistency of the complete ownership experience.
- 6.3-inch 1080×2424 pOLED display with a 60–120Hz refresh rate
- Up to 3,000 nits peak brightness
- Tensor G4 processor and 8GB RAM
- 128GB or 256GB storage
- 48MP main camera, 13MP ultrawide and 13MP selfie camera
- 5,100mAh battery, Qi wireless charging and up to 30W wired charging with the appropriate charger
- Android 16 at launch
- Seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates
- IP68 dust and water resistance
The US launch price was $499, although the Google Store currently lists it from $424. Treat $424 as a promotion rather than the permanent price, and confirm the storage version, tax treatment, trade-in requirements and warranty before ordering.
Why the Pixel 10a is the default choice
Pixel phones remain particularly good at turning difficult scenes into usable photographs. The 10a is the best point-and-shoot stills option here: HDR exposure, skin tones, night scenes and moving subjects matter more than the headline megapixel count. Its compact dimensions are also easier to live with than the 6.83-inch OnePlus, Nothing and POCO phones.
Seven years of updates is the clearest long-term support promise in this group. That does not make the phone indestructible, however. Battery wear, repair cost, storage capacity and local service still determine whether it remains pleasant to use after two to four years.
Pixel 10a compromises
Google reused the previous-generation Tensor G4 and camera hardware that is essentially the same as the Pixel 9a. Tom’s Guide found almost identical benchmark results, including Geekbench 6 scores of 1,694 single-core and 4,501 multi-core, while TechRadar also found no meaningful camera-generation leap.
Recommended Free Tools
That is fine for messaging, photography, streaming and ordinary games, but the Pixel is the weakest gaming recommendation among these six phones. It is not the right choice for demanding titles at high settings or for buyers who want the fastest charging.
Google’s “best camera under $500” statement is a US MSRP claim based on a Google-commissioned third-party evaluation. It should not be presented as a universal independent test result. Satellite SOS is also specified as US-only, with restrictions and an included service period.
The charger is sold separately. Google also warns that water resistance can diminish through normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage, and liquid damage may not be covered by warranty. IP68 is useful protection, not a permanent waterproof guarantee.
Best performance and battery: OnePlus 15R
The OnePlus 15R is the strongest choice for demanding users who prioritize speed and endurance. It uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, has 12GB of RAM, and comes with 256GB or 512GB storage. Its 6.83-inch AMOLED display can run at up to 165Hz, and its 7,400mAh battery supports 80W wired charging.
TechRadar reported reliable two-day battery life in testing. The large battery is the most practical all-rounder in this shortlist, although the POCO has a still larger capacity.

- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹
- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²
- MEMORIES MADE PICTURE PERFECT: Capture every angle in stunning clarity, from wide family photos to close-ups of friends, with the triple-lens camera on Galaxy A17 5G.
- NEED MORE STORAGE? WE HAVE YOU COVERED: With an improved 2TB of expandable storage, Galaxy A17 5G makes it easy to keep cherished photos, videos and important files readily accessible whenever you need them.³
- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
UK launch pricing was £649 for 256GB and £729 for 512GB, according to Expert Reviews. At that price, the 15R is better described as premium midrange and should be compared with discounted flagships as well as ordinary midrange models.
Why buy it
- Best gaming performance in this comparison
- Very large battery with fast charging
- High-refresh-rate display suited to gaming and scrolling
- More storage and RAM than many rivals
Why avoid it
The camera system is not as versatile as the Nothing or Samsung alternatives: it has a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultrawide, but no telephoto lens. It also lacks wireless charging. The charger may not be included in every market; Expert Reviews’ UK review unit included only a cable.
OnePlus support promises four Android OS updates and six years of security updates. Availability is also a concern. A July 2026 Tom’s Guide report said OnePlus would leave the US, UK and Europe, while service commitments remained and future OxygenOS/ColorOS plans were unclear. Do not treat that report as settled global policy without checking official OnePlus channels for your country before purchase.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Best large-screen Samsung: Galaxy A57 5G
The Galaxy A57 5G is the most straightforward recommendation for Samsung users and anyone who wants a large, polished Android phone without moving to flagship pricing.
- $549.99 US starting price; US availability began 9 April 2026
- 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED+ display at up to 120Hz
- 179g body and 6.9mm thickness
- 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 5MP macro cameras
- 12MP selfie camera
- 5,000mAh battery
- 8GB/128GB or 8GB/256GB configurations
- IP68 rating
- Up to six Android/One UI upgrades and six years of security updates, depending on model and market
The A57 is appealing because of its screen, slim body, IP68 rating and One UI ecosystem. Samsung’s support promise is also strong, but retain the phrase “up to”: the exact policy varies by device and region. Fast charging requires a separately sold charger.
Performance is weaker than the OnePlus 15R and POCO X8 Pro Max, and generally behind several performance-focused rivals. The 5MP macro camera adds versatility on the specification sheet but is weak in testing, according to PhoneArena and Tom’s Guide.
The A57 is a good large-screen everyday phone, but do not call it the battery champion without a directly comparable independent test. Tom’s Guide’s cheap-phone table lists the A57 battery result as unavailable.

Best design and zoom: Nothing Phone (4a) Pro
The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is the most interesting alternative if you want a phone that looks different and has genuine zoom hardware rather than relying solely on digital cropping.
- $499 US list price for 8GB/128GB; the US store currently shows a $449 promotion
- Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 and Android 16 with Nothing OS 4.1
- 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with adaptive 144Hz refresh rate
- 50MP main, 8MP ultrawide and 50MP periscope camera
- 5,080mAh battery and 50W wired charging
- IP65 dust and water resistance
- Three Android OS updates and six years of security updates
Its periscope camera makes it the best zoom-hardware choice in this group. Its distinctive design and relatively clean software also separate it from more conventional rivals. However, the phone is large and weighs roughly 210g, and IP65 is not equivalent to the IP68 protection offered by Google and Samsung.
Nothing’s advertised 140× zoom includes digital zoom. It must not be described as 140× optical zoom. The 4a Pro also has no wireless charging. 5G, eSIM and NFC support vary by region, so verify the exact model before importing or buying from a third-party seller.
Nothing promises three Android OS updates and six years of security updates. That is respectable, but weaker for operating-system upgrades than Google, Samsung’s maximum promise and the OnePlus 15R.

- US Model – Global Connectivity – Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.
Best gaming and battery value: POCO X8 Pro Max
The POCO X8 Pro Max is the specialist value choice. Its 8,500mAh battery and 100W HyperCharge are the headline features, and independent reviews found strong sustained battery performance with roughly two-day use under intensive conditions.
- 8,500mAh typical battery
- 100W HyperCharge and up to 27W wired reverse charging
- 50MP main camera with OIS and 8MP ultrawide
- 4K video recording at 30 or 60fps
- HyperOS 3
- 6.83-inch AMOLED display, 120Hz and up to 3,500 nits peak brightness in independent testing
It is a strong gaming and heavy-use phone, especially in markets where POCO has official retail, warranty and service support. The main camera is usable, but the ultrawide is mediocre. Reviews also noted noticeable pre-installed bloatware.
Do not assume the 100W charger is included: package contents vary by market. Peak brightness is a maximum figure rather than a guarantee of sustained outdoor brightness. POCO is the right pick for battery capacity and performance per dollar, not for clean software, camera consistency or maximum support confidence.
Best iPhone alternative: iPhone 17e
The iPhone 17e is the best option for buyers who want iOS, Apple services or strong video recording. It uses Apple’s A19 chip, has a compact 6.1-inch OLED display, and starts with 256GB storage rather than 128GB. It also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, has IP68 protection, and records 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60fps.
Its 48MP rear camera offers a 2× in-sensor telephoto mode, but there is only one rear camera system and no ultrawide lens. The iPhone’s video quality, stabilization and color consistency make it the best video choice here.
The main hardware compromises are a 60Hz display and 20W wired charging. It is also usually more expensive than the strongest Android value options. Apple does not publish a simple fixed seven-year update guarantee comparable to Google’s explicit Pixel promise, so no exact support duration should be claimed.
US iPhone 17e models are eSIM-only and do not accept a physical SIM card. Physical-SIM users should confirm carrier eSIM support before buying the US version.
Camera comparison: choose the shooting style, not the megapixel count
| Camera priority | Best choice | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Point-and-shoot stills | Pixel 10a | Strong computational processing, HDR, skin tones and night photography |
| Zoom hardware | Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | 50MP periscope camera; digital zoom claims are not optical zoom |
| Video | iPhone 17e | 4K Dolby Vision up to 60fps and excellent stabilization |
| Camera versatility | Galaxy A57 or Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | Choose based on whether you prefer Samsung’s ultrawide/macro combination or Nothing’s periscope zoom |
| Gaming-camera compromise | Not the OnePlus 15R | Its performance is excellent, but the lack of a telephoto limits versatility |
When comparing these phones, look at moving subjects, skin tones, HDR highlights, night scenes, ultrawide edge quality, zoom detail, selfie exposure and video stabilization. A 50MP label does not tell you how consistently a phone handles those situations.
The Pixel 10a has the strongest default still-camera experience, but it does not have a dedicated telephoto lens. The Nothing is more useful for distant subjects. The Samsung offers a broader-looking camera set, although its macro sensor is not especially good. The iPhone is the most dependable video tool.
Battery and charging: capacity is only part of the answer
| Phone | Battery and charging facts | Best interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| POCO X8 Pro Max | 8,500mAh; 100W HyperCharge | Largest capacity and fastest charging claim, with market-dependent charger inclusion |
| OnePlus 15R | 7,400mAh; 80W wired | Best mainstream all-rounder for endurance and charging |
| Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | 5,080mAh; 50W wired | Good endurance, but independent testing fell short of some marketing estimates |
| Pixel 10a | 5,100mAh; Qi wireless and up to 30W wired | Good balance; Tom’s Guide recorded 15 hours 16 minutes in its cellular web-browsing test |
| Galaxy A57 | 5,000mAh; charger sold separately | Potentially strong, but do not rank it first without comparable test data |
| iPhone 17e | 20W wired; MagSafe and Qi2 | Convenient wireless charging, but slowest wired charging in this group |
Manufacturer battery capacity and charging figures are not directly comparable with review results. Battery life changes with display brightness, network quality, refresh rate, gaming load, temperature and software. Review-unit results should only be compared when the test method and conditions match.
Fast-charging claims also require the right charger and cable, and may assume screen-off or controlled-temperature conditions. OnePlus explicitly notes that real-world charging varies from its laboratory figures.

- POCO X8 Pro Max: strong sustained performance, 8,500mAh battery and fast charging.
- Nothing Phone (4a) Pro: capable performance with a high-refresh-rate display.
- Samsung Galaxy A57: suitable for everyday gaming, but not a performance leader.
- Pixel 10a: fine for ordinary games, but Tensor G4 is substantially weaker for demanding titles than Snapdragon 8-series competition.
This is an editorial synthesis from chipset specifications and independent reviews, not the result of one directly comparable laboratory test. Sustained thermal performance matters more than a short benchmark burst, so check reviews for the games you actually play.
Which phone will last longest?
The Pixel 10a has the clearest long-term software advantage because Google explicitly promises seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates from Google Store availability. Samsung offers up to six Android/One UI upgrades and six years of security updates, subject to model and market. OnePlus lists four Android OS updates and six years of security updates. Nothing lists three Android updates and six years of security updates.
| Phone | Published support promise | Ownership concern |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 10a | Seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates | Tensor performance and battery replacement cost over time |
| Galaxy A57 | Up to six Android/One UI upgrades and six years of security updates | Exact policy varies by model and market |
| OnePlus 15R | Four Android OS updates and six years of security updates | Regional availability and future platform plans need checking |
| Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | Three Android OS updates and six years of security updates | Shorter OS-upgrade window and region-dependent support |
| iPhone 17e | Apple does not publish a simple fixed duration | Historically strong support, but avoid promising an exact number of years |
Software support is only one part of longevity. Also check repairability, battery replacement pricing, local authorized service, storage capacity, modem compatibility and performance headroom. A 128GB phone with seven years of updates may still become frustrating sooner than a 256GB phone with a shorter formal promise.

US
US prices in this guide are unlocked list prices or current store prices where stated. The Pixel 10a launched at $499 and is currently displayed from $424 on the Google Store. The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is listed at $499 for 8GB/128GB, with a current $449 promotion. The Galaxy A57 starts at $549.99. Confirm whether sales tax, trade-in credits or a carrier activation are required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
US iPhone 17e models are eSIM-only. The Pixel’s satellite SOS feature is specified as US-only, and AI features can depend on region, language, account and internet access.
UK and Europe
The OnePlus 15R launched in the UK at £649 for 256GB and £729 for 512GB, putting it close to entry-level flagship territory. Before choosing OnePlus, confirm local stock, warranty and service coverage. The same check applies to Nothing and POCO, whose configurations, connectivity and accessories can vary by country.
Do not compare UK and US prices without accounting for taxes, storage and included accessories. A phone with a lower sticker price may require a separately sold charger or may have a weaker local warranty.
India
Use the official India pages for the Pixel 10a, Galaxy A57 and OnePlus 15R to check current local pricing, storage variants, bank offers and warranty terms. Do not convert US or UK prices directly into rupees and assume the result represents Indian value.

Markets with limited official support
Imported phones may lack local 5G bands, eSIM, NFC, VoLTE support or an official warranty. Nothing specifically warns that 5G, eSIM and NFC vary by market. Verify the exact model number and carrier compatibility before importing any phone, particularly if contactless payments, dual-SIM use or emergency services matter to you.
Who should buy each phone?
- Buy the Pixel 10a if you want the best easy-camera experience, a smaller phone, wireless charging and the strongest explicit update promise. Avoid it if you play demanding games or want a telephoto camera.
- Buy the OnePlus 15R if you want maximum speed, a huge battery and fast charging. Avoid it if camera versatility, wireless charging or stable regional availability is more important.
- Buy the Galaxy A57 if you prefer Samsung’s software, services and large-screen design. Avoid it if you want the best gaming performance or a genuinely useful macro camera.
- Buy the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro if you value design, clean software and real zoom hardware. Avoid it if you want a compact phone, IP68 protection or the longest OS-upgrade schedule.
- Buy the POCO X8 Pro Max if battery capacity, charging speed and gaming value come first. Avoid it if bloatware, camera consistency or official service is a concern in your country.
- Buy the iPhone 17e if you want iOS, Apple services, compact dimensions and excellent video. Avoid the US version if you need a physical SIM, and avoid it if a 120Hz display or fast wired charging is essential.
How to make the final buying decision
Use this short decision tree:
- If you want iOS, buy the iPhone 17e.
- If you want the best default camera and long support, buy the Pixel 10a.
- If gaming and battery life are your top priorities, compare the OnePlus 15R and POCO X8 Pro Max.
- If you want Samsung’s ecosystem and a large screen, buy the Galaxy A57.
- If zoom and distinctive design matter most, buy the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro.
- If any model is within a small price difference of a current flagship, compare cameras, update policy, storage and warranty before assuming the midrange phone is better value.
For a more structured comparison, weight total ownership value, camera consistency, support, battery and charging, display and ergonomics, performance, and durability. A sensible general-purpose weighting is 25% ownership value, 20% camera and video, 15% software support, 15% battery and charging, 10% display and ergonomics, 10% performance, and 5% durability, connectivity and ecosystem. A gaming buyer should give much more weight to sustained performance and thermals; a long-term owner should give more weight to support, repair service and battery replacement.

Price and deal checklist
Before ordering, record the exact date and compare like-for-like configurations. Check:
- Country and tax-inclusive price
- Storage and RAM configuration
- Whether the price is MSRP, sale pricing, a trade-in offer or a carrier promotion
- Charger and cable contents
- Official local warranty and repair network
- 5G bands, eSIM, NFC, VoLTE and physical-SIM support
- Battery replacement cost
- Return period and seller reputation
A discounted previous-generation flagship can beat a new midrange phone, but only after checking remaining software support, battery health, repair cost, storage and whether the device is refurbished or imported.
