The best iPad stylus for most compatible iPad owners is the Apple Pencil Pro. It offers the most complete feature set for drawing and premium note-taking, including pressure and tilt sensitivity, hover, magnetic pairing and charging, squeeze controls, barrel roll, haptic feedback, double-tap tool switching, and Find My support. However, it is compatible only with iPad Pro models using M4 or M5, iPad Air models using M2, M3, or M4, and the iPad mini with A17 Pro.

If your iPad is older or you mainly write, annotate PDFs, or take notes, the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the better value. The Logitech Crayon USB-C is the most practical broad-compatibility choice for schools, children, families, and shared devices. Before buying any stylus, identify your exact iPad model under Settings > General > About; iPad Pencil compatibility depends on the generation, not simply the screen size or product name.

1. Apple Pencil Pro: best overall iPad stylus

Choose the Apple Pencil Pro if you have a compatible iPad and want the most capable stylus Apple makes. It is the strongest choice for illustration, design work, handwritten notes, markup, and users who will benefit from its extra controls. Its current U.S. Apple Store list price is $129, although prices, promotions, stock, and regional availability can change.

For artists, the important features are pressure sensitivity, tilt sensitivity, hover, and barrel roll. Pressure can control brush size or opacity in compatible apps, tilt can affect shading or stroke behavior, and barrel roll lets supported brush and pen tools respond to the Pencil’s rotation. Hover can show a preview before the tip touches the display.

Apple Pencil Pro also adds a squeeze gesture for opening a tool palette or performing other supported actions, haptic feedback for confirmation, double-tap tool switching, magnetic pairing and charging, and Find My support. These features make it more versatile than the lower-cost Apple Pencil (USB-C), particularly when an app supports them.

  • WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)

The limitation is compatibility. Apple Pencil Pro does not work with every iPad that supports an Apple Pencil. It is designed for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • iPad Pro models with M4 or M5
  • iPad Air models with M2, M3, or M4
  • iPad mini with A17 Pro

It is not a universal upgrade for an older iPad Pro or iPad Air. If your tablet is outside that list, choose the Pencil generation made for your iPad instead.

For compatible tablets, the Apple Pencil Pro is the best iPad stylus for drawing and the best overall premium option. Verify the iPad model before ordering rather than relying on the tablet’s size or appearance.

2. Apple Pencil (USB-C): best for writing and annotation

Choose the Apple Pencil (USB-C) if your priorities are handwriting, PDF annotation, journaling, note-taking, and basic sketching. It provides pixel-level precision, tilt sensitivity, and palm rejection, while working with a wider range of iPads than Apple Pencil Pro.

It is a particularly sensible choice for someone who wants an official Apple stylus without paying for creative controls they will not use. It supports USB-C charging and can attach magnetically to compatible iPads for storage. Magnetic attachment should not be confused with magnetic charging: the Pencil (USB-C) charges through its USB-C connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is that it does not provide the complete Apple Pencil Pro feature set. In particular, buyers should not expect pressure-sensitive brush control, squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, or Find My support. It does support hover on selected iPad models, rather than universally across every compatible iPad.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible with a broad range of current and older iPads, including the iPad 10th generation, iPad with A16, iPad mini 6th generation, iPad mini with A17 Pro, iPad Air 4th and 5th generation, M2/M3/M4 iPad Air models, and several iPad Pro generations. Because the exact list varies by model, check the compatibility table below before purchase.

For most people who primarily write or mark up documents, the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the best-value Apple option. Apple’s education procurement documentation lists it at $69, but that figure should not be treated as a guaranteed general retail price.

3. Logitech Crayon USB-C: best for schools and broad compatibility

Choose the Logitech Crayon USB-C for classroom use, children, families, and shared iPads. Logitech describes it as compatible with all iPads from 2018 onward and lists palm rejection, tilt sensitivity, USB-C charging, a replaceable tip, and stated drop protection. Its flat-sided body is also practical for preventing the stylus from rolling away on a desk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crayon is well suited to handwriting, markup, simple sketches, and educational apps. Its broad compatibility can make it easier to equip a mixture of iPad models without matching a different Apple Pencil generation to every device.

It is not a pressure-sensitive replacement for Apple Pencil Pro. Artists who need brush size or opacity to respond to pressure should choose a compatible pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil instead. Logitech Crayon’s tilt support can affect line behavior in supported apps, but tilt is not the same as pressure sensitivity.

The current USB-C Crayon charges through USB-C and does not use Apple Pencil-style magnetic charging. Check Logitech’s compatibility information for the exact iPad and software combination, especially when buying for a managed school fleet.

4. Apple Pencil (2nd generation): best for older premium iPads

Apple Pencil (2nd generation) remains the correct choice for several older premium iPads. It supports pressure and tilt sensitivity, palm rejection, double-tap tool switching, and magnetic pairing, storage, and charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is designed for:

  • iPad Pro 11-inch generations 1 through 4
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch generations 3 through 6
  • iPad Air 4th and 5th generation
  • iPad mini 6th generation

Apple Pencil 2 is not interchangeable with Apple Pencil Pro. An older 11-inch iPad Pro may look similar to a newer model but still require the second-generation Pencil or the USB-C Pencil. Check the exact model number under Settings > General > About before ordering.

5. Apple Pencil (1st generation): best for older standard iPads

Apple Pencil (1st generation) is still relevant for older compatible iPads. It offers pressure and tilt sensitivity, palm rejection, and precision, making it more suitable for pressure-sensitive drawing than a basic capacitive stylus.

Compatible devices include:

  • iPad 6th through 9th generation
  • iPad Air 3rd generation
  • iPad mini 5th generation
  • Selected older iPad Pro models
  • iPad 10th generation and iPad with A16 when used with the required adapter

Apple Pencil 1 charges through its Lightning connector. When it is used with the iPad 10th generation or iPad with A16, buyers may need the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter because those iPads use USB-C rather than Lightning. Do not assume that the adapter is included with every purchase or that any USB-C adapter will perform the same function.

Apple’s education procurement documentation lists Apple Pencil 1 at $89, but retail pricing and package contents can differ.

Compatibility comes before price

The most common iPad stylus buying mistake is choosing the stylus first. Apple has several Pencil models with overlapping names but different compatibility requirements. Use your iPad’s exact model information, then match it to the list below.

Your iPad Compatible choices from this guide Important note
iPad Pro with M4 or M5 Apple Pencil Pro; Apple Pencil (USB-C) Apple Pencil Pro is the premium choice.
iPad Pro 11-inch, generations 1–4 Apple Pencil (2nd generation); Apple Pencil (USB-C) Do not buy Apple Pencil Pro.
iPad Pro 12.9-inch, generations 3–6 Apple Pencil (2nd generation); Apple Pencil (USB-C) Do not buy Apple Pencil Pro.
iPad Air with M2, M3, or M4 Apple Pencil Pro; Apple Pencil (USB-C) Pro offers pressure-sensitive creative controls.
iPad Air 4th or 5th generation Apple Pencil (2nd generation); Apple Pencil (USB-C) Apple Pencil Pro is not the correct model.
iPad mini with A17 Pro Apple Pencil Pro; Apple Pencil (USB-C) Pro is the premium option.
iPad mini 6th generation Apple Pencil (2nd generation); Apple Pencil (USB-C) Do not confuse it with the A17 Pro mini.
iPad 10th generation or iPad with A16 Apple Pencil (USB-C); Apple Pencil (1st generation) with adapter Check whether the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is included or required.
iPad 6th–9th generation Apple Pencil (1st generation); Logitech Crayon Confirm the exact generation.
iPad Air 3rd generation, iPad mini 5th generation, or selected older iPad Pro Apple Pencil (1st generation); Logitech Crayon where supported Use the manufacturer’s model-by-model list before buying.
iPad from 2018 onward Logitech Crayon USB-C, according to Logitech’s compatibility listing Verify the exact model and current software requirements.

This table is a buying guide, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s current compatibility pages. Apple’s model list is the final authority for Apple Pencil products, while Logitech’s current compatibility documentation should be checked for Crayon.

Which stylus should you buy for your use case?

For professional drawing and illustration

Buy Apple Pencil Pro if your iPad supports it. Pressure, tilt, hover, barrel roll, squeeze, and haptic feedback give compatible creative apps more ways to control tools. Barrel roll is especially useful with brushes and shaped pens that respond to rotation.

If your iPad is older, buy the compatible Apple Pencil 1 or Apple Pencil 2 instead. An incompatible Pro model is not a better drawing tool than the Pencil that actually works with your tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For handwritten notes and PDFs

Buy Apple Pencil (USB-C) unless you specifically want pressure-sensitive art controls or Pro-only gestures. Its precision, tilt support, and palm rejection cover the central requirements for writing and document markup.

Logitech Crayon is also a strong choice when several people share the iPad or when broad compatibility and replaceable tips matter more than pressure-sensitive artwork.

For children and classrooms

Logitech Crayon USB-C is the practical default for many classrooms because Logitech lists broad iPad compatibility, palm rejection, tilt sensitivity, a replaceable tip, USB-C charging, and four-foot drop protection. For a child who is also learning digital illustration, a compatible pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil may be worth choosing instead.

For an older iPad

Do not use the iPad’s display size as a shortcut. Match the generation: iPad 9th generation generally points to Apple Pencil 1 or Crayon, while iPad Air 5 points to Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil USB-C. An older iPad Pro can require Apple Pencil 2 even though newer iPad Pro models use Apple Pencil Pro.

What the important stylus features mean

Pressure sensitivity

Pressure sensitivity allows a compatible app to vary a brush, line, opacity, or other effect according to how firmly you press. It matters most for drawing, painting, calligraphy, and illustration. Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil 2, and Apple Pencil 1 support pressure sensitivity. Apple Pencil USB-C and Logitech Crayon should not be treated as pressure-sensitive replacements for them.

Tilt sensitivity

Tilt lets the stylus respond to its angle. It can produce shading or change the behavior of supported brushes and writing tools. Tilt is useful for sketching, but it does not provide the same control as pressure sensitivity.

Hover

Hover allows the iPad to show a pointer or tool preview while the Pencil is close to, but not touching, the display. Availability depends on the iPad model and app. Apple Pencil Pro supports hover on compatible hardware; Apple Pencil USB-C supports it on selected iPads.

Palm rejection

Palm rejection allows you to rest your hand on the screen while writing or drawing without creating unwanted marks. It is essential for natural handwriting and is supported by the Apple Pencil models and Logitech Crayon covered here when used with compatible iPads and apps.

Magnetic storage versus magnetic charging

A Pencil can attach magnetically for storage without necessarily charging magnetically. Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil 2 use the compatible iPad’s magnetic interface for pairing, storage, and charging. Apple Pencil USB-C can attach for storage but charges through USB-C. Apple Pencil 1 uses plug-in charging, and Logitech Crayon USB-C charges through USB-C.

Accessories and ongoing costs

Stylus tips wear over time, particularly with frequent drawing or textured screen protectors. Apple sells Apple Pencil replacement tips, but replacing a tip is not automatically necessary for every owner. Replace one when it is visibly worn, damaged, or no longer glides and draws normally.

Owners of Apple Pencil 1 using an iPad 10th generation or iPad with A16 should also confirm whether they need the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter. This is a model-specific requirement, not a universal Apple Pencil accessory.

A case with a Pencil holder can be useful for models without convenient magnetic charging, while a screen protector can change the writing feel. Verify that any case, holder, or protector leaves the iPad’s charging and magnetic area accessible and is made for the exact iPad generation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying Apple Pencil Pro for an older iPad Pro or iPad Air. Pro compatibility is limited to M4/M5 iPad Pro, M2/M3/M4 iPad Air, and A17 Pro iPad mini.
  2. Assuming Apple Pencil USB-C has every Pro feature. It is aimed at writing, annotation, sketching, and value, not the full pressure-sensitive Pro control set.
  3. Confusing attachment with charging. Magnetic storage does not always mean magnetic charging.
  4. Using a generic capacitive stylus for professional artwork. A generic stylus may be fine for tapping and basic navigation but should not be presented as equivalent to a pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil.
  5. Ignoring adapters and replacement tips. Apple Pencil 1 may need a USB-C adapter with certain iPads, and tips are replaceable consumables.
  6. Buying from a price list without checking the date. Apple’s U.S. store price and education-procurement prices are different contexts, and retailer prices can change.

Quick buying checklist

  • Open Settings > General > About and record the exact iPad model and generation.
  • Check Apple’s current compatibility list, or Logitech’s list if choosing Crayon.
  • Choose Apple Pencil Pro only for M4/M5 iPad Pro, M2/M3/M4 iPad Air, or A17 Pro iPad mini.
  • Choose Apple Pencil USB-C for writing and annotation when you do not need pressure-sensitive creative controls.
  • Choose Apple Pencil 2 for the listed older iPad Pro, iPad Air 4/5, and iPad mini 6 models.
  • Choose Apple Pencil 1 for the listed older standard iPads, and check whether an adapter is needed.
  • Choose Logitech Crayon for broad compatibility, education, shared devices, and replaceable-tip convenience.
  • Confirm charging method, included accessories, price, stock, and return policy before completing the purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple Pencil Pro compatible with every iPad?

No. Apple Pencil Pro works with iPad Pro models using M4 or M5, iPad Air models using M2, M3, or M4, and the iPad mini with A17 Pro. It does not work with every older iPad Pro or iPad Air.

Which iPad stylus is best for note-taking?

Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the best general choice for note-taking, journaling, PDF annotation, and markup when you do not need pressure-sensitive drawing controls. Logitech Crayon is a good alternative for classrooms, children, and shared devices.

Does Apple Pencil USB-C have pressure sensitivity?

Apple Pencil (USB-C) is designed around precision, tilt, and palm rejection rather than the pressure-sensitive creative controls found on Apple Pencil Pro and the first- and second-generation Apple Pencil models.

Is Apple Pencil 2 the same as Apple Pencil Pro?

No. They are different products with different compatibility lists. Apple Pencil 2 is intended for specific older iPad Pro, iPad Air 4th/5th generation, and iPad mini 6 models; Apple Pencil Pro is intended for newer M4/M5 iPad Pro, M2/M3/M4 iPad Air, and A17 Pro iPad mini models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Logitech Crayon support pressure sensitivity?

Logitech Crayon is not positioned as a pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil replacement. It supports features such as tilt sensitivity and palm rejection, making it suitable for handwriting, markup, and basic sketching, but professional artists should choose a compatible pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy Apple Pencil Pro for the best drawing and premium stylus experience—but only if your iPad is an M4/M5 iPad Pro, M2/M3/M4 iPad Air, or A17 Pro iPad mini. Buy Apple Pencil (USB-C) for writing and annotation, Logitech Crayon USB-C for broad compatibility and education, Apple Pencil 2 for compatible older premium iPads, and Apple Pencil 1 for compatible older standard iPads. Check Settings > General > About before purchasing.
