The best cheap phone plan depends on how much high-speed data you actually use. For light users, Tello’s $10 2GB plan is the clearest value. For a simple month-to-month unlimited plan with taxes and fees included, Visible’s basic plan costs $25 per month. Mint Mobile has the most conspicuous introductory bargain at $15 per month, but its first three months require a $45 upfront payment and the price is not permanent. For annual prepayment, US Mobile’s $199 first-year Unlimited Starter offer and $210 Unlimited Flex plan have the lowest monthly equivalents among the leading options reviewed here.

Those prices are not interchangeable. Some are monthly rates, some require three or twelve months paid in advance, and several plans call data unlimited even though only a set amount is available at high speed. The comparison below separates those differences so you can find the lowest honest total cost for your coverage, data, hotspot, and travel needs.

Quick verdict: the cheapest good fit by user type

Best for Plan Advertised price What you get Important catch
Light data use Tello 2GB $10/month, before taxes and surcharges 2GB of data, unlimited talk and text Choose it only if roughly 2GB is enough and coverage works where you use your phone. Displayed pricing may be introductory for new lines.
Simple month-to-month unlimited Visible basic $25/month, taxes and fees included Unlimited talk, text, and data on Verizon’s 5G and 4G LTE networks; unlimited phone hotspot use Video is limited to up to 480p SD. Unlimited does not mean the same priority or video quality as every other plan.
Introductory bargain Mint Mobile $15/month for the initial three-month term; $45 upfront Plan choices including 6GB, 17GB, 23GB, and unlimited Taxes and fees are extra, and renewal pricing depends on the plan and term. The $15 rate should not be treated as a permanent monthly price.
Lowest annual-equivalent price US Mobile Unlimited Starter $199 for the first year, about $16.60/month Annual unlimited plan with high-speed and hotspot allowances that vary by selected network First-year offer is for new lines and may auto-renew at the full price. You pay for a year before testing the service.
Annual value with network choice US Mobile Unlimited Flex $210/year, or $17.50/month equivalent Unlimited talk, text, and data; 10GB high-speed data and 5GB hotspot data Unlimited means continued service, not unlimited high-speed data. The annual commitment and selected network matter.
Alternative $15 moderate-data plan Helium Mobile Air $15/month, before taxes and fees 10GB cellular data, unlimited calls and texts, and 5GB hotspot data taken from the 10GB allowance Coverage and the transition from high-speed to reduced-speed service remain important. It is an alternative, not a universal winner.
Annual unlimited on AT&T-network prepaid service Cricket 12-month unlimited $300 paid upfront, equivalent to $25/month Unlimited plan with 5G access at no extra charge on a compatible phone Cricket may temporarily slow unlimited plans when the network is busy. The $25 equivalent requires the entire annual payment.

How to compare cheap phone plans honestly

A low advertised number is only useful if it describes the price you will actually pay for the period you intend to keep the plan. Compare each option using these six questions:

  1. What is the real payment schedule? A monthly plan is not equivalent to a $199 or $300 annual plan simply because the arithmetic produces a lower monthly figure. Record the full amount due today and the number of months it covers.
  2. Are taxes and fees included? Visible includes taxes and fees in the listed $25 basic monthly price. US Mobile includes taxes and fees in the displayed annual prices described here. Mint, Tello, and Helium state that taxes, fees, or surcharges may apply, so their displayed rates are not necessarily checkout totals.
  3. How much high-speed data is included? Unlimited data can mean service continues after a high-speed allowance is used, but at reduced speeds. US Mobile Unlimited Flex explicitly includes 10GB of high-speed data; Helium Infinity includes 36GB before speeds are reduced; and Mint documents possible speed reductions after 50GB in a month in certain congested circumstances.
  4. Is hotspot data separate? Visible’s basic plan advertises unlimited phone hotspot use. Tello’s unlimited plan includes 10GB of hotspot usage. Mint includes up to 20GB, US Mobile Flex includes 5GB, and Helium Air’s 5GB hotspot allowance comes out of its 10GB cellular-data allowance.
  5. What network will the phone use, and what priority applies? A carrier brand or network name does not prove that service will be good at your home, workplace, or usual travel destinations. Check the exact address and test compatibility before moving your number.
  6. What happens after the promotion or first year? Introductory pricing, first-year pricing, and renewal pricing can be very different. A plan that is cheapest for three months may not be cheapest for the next nine, and an annual plan can renew at a higher full price.

A useful calculation is:

Effective monthly cost = the total amount paid for the period, including known taxes and fees, divided by the number of covered months.

For a fair comparison, calculate the first-term monthly equivalent and the likely renewal monthly equivalent separately. Do not blend a first-year promotional price with a later regular price and call the result permanent.

Plan-by-plan analysis

Tello: best for people who can stay within a small data allowance

Tello’s custom-plan page currently shows a particularly straightforward low-data ladder:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • $10: 2GB of data with unlimited talk and text.
  • $15: 10GB of data with unlimited talk and text.
  • $20: 20GB of data.
  • $25: unlimited data.

Taxes and surcharges vary by location, and Tello has no annual contract or early-termination fee. That flexibility makes it useful for someone who knows their normal data consumption but occasionally wants to move up or down a tier. The $15 10GB plan is a better moderate-use comparison than an unlimited plan for many people who mostly use Wi-Fi at home and work.

Tello’s unlimited plan includes 10GB of hotspot usage. On the non-unlimited plans, hotspot use generally comes from the plan’s data balance, so a 10GB plan does not give you an additional 10GB hotspot allowance. That distinction matters if you connect a laptop or tablet regularly.

Choose Tello if: you want a configurable plan, use less than about 20GB per month, or value the ability to change tiers without an annual commitment.

Watch before buying: the displayed price may be an introductory price for new lines for a limited period. Confirm the post-introductory price, taxes, and any eligibility rules at checkout. Also check coverage and phone compatibility for your locations.

Visible: best simple month-to-month unlimited plan

Visible’s basic plan is the easiest recommendation for readers who want one predictable monthly number: $25 per month with taxes and fees included. It includes unlimited talk, text, and data on Verizon’s 5G and 4G LTE networks, plus unlimited phone hotspot use. For someone who would otherwise exceed a capped plan or frequently uses the phone as a hotspot, that simplicity can be worth more than a lower base price with added taxes.

The trade-offs are important. Video on the basic plan is limited to up to 480p SD quality, and Visible’s different tiers do not have identical network priority or video behavior. Visible+ costs $35 per month and adds premium-data features, faster hotspot performance, and international benefits. It is not the cheapest plan, but it may be the more appropriate comparison for someone who needs those features rather than merely unlimited domestic data.

Visible also lists an annual basic plan at $275 per year, which works out to about $22.92 per month. That lowers the monthly equivalent but changes the risk: you pay for the year upfront, so switching after a short trial may be less convenient than with the basic monthly option.

Choose Visible if: you want unlimited domestic service, unlimited phone hotspot use, and a listed monthly price that already includes taxes and fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch before buying: verify Verizon coverage at your home, workplace, and regular destinations. A 5G label does not guarantee good indoor coverage or consistent performance, and unlimited service does not promise the same priority or video quality as a more expensive tier.

Mint Mobile: best if you are comfortable with prepaid introductory pricing

Mint’s current new-customer offer advertises plans at $15 per month for the initial three-month term, with $45 paid upfront. The available choices include 6GB, 17GB, 23GB, and unlimited data. Taxes and fees are extra.

That is a genuine short-term bargain, but it should be evaluated as a three-month purchase rather than as a permanent $15 monthly plan. Mint’s regular pricing after the introductory term depends on the plan and renewal term. Current 12-month disclosures show $15 introductory pricing for the 23GB and unlimited plans, with regular prices of $25 per month for 23GB and $30 per month for unlimited. Those disclosures are why the renewal date and term should be part of your calculation.

Mint’s unlimited plan includes up to 20GB of hotspot data. Mint also says that customers using more than 50GB in a month may notice reduced speeds for the rest of the cycle in certain locations when the network is busy. In other words, unlimited refers to continued service, not an assurance of full speed under every usage and congestion condition.

  • WHO SHOULD GET IT: Anyone who hates their phone bill

Choose Mint if: you want to minimize the initial three-month cost, are willing to pay upfront, and can compare the regular renewal price before the promotional period ends.

Watch before buying: add taxes and fees to the $45 upfront amount, confirm the price after three months, and check whether the term you select changes the renewal price. Do not choose the unlimited tier solely because its introductory price looks the same as a smaller data tier.

US Mobile: best annual value when network choice or travel matters

US Mobile’s annual pricing is attractive on paper, but its plan names require closer reading than a simple unlimited label suggests:

  • Unlimited Starter: $199 for the first year, or about $16.60 per month.
  • Unlimited Flex: $210 per year, or $17.50 per month.
  • Unlimited Premium: $299 for the first year, or about $24.90 per month.

The displayed annual prices include taxes and fees. The offers are for new lines and may auto-renew at the full price, so compare both the first-year total and the renewal total before paying.

Flex includes unlimited talk, text, and data, but only 10GB of high-speed data and 5GB of hotspot data. That is the clearest example in this comparison of why unlimited data and unlimited high-speed data are different. Continued connectivity after the high-speed allowance is used may be useful for messaging and basic access, but it should not be confused with unlimited full-speed streaming or hotspot use.

US Mobile lets customers choose among the Dark Star, Warp, and Light Speed network options. Its documentation explains that data limits and priority can vary by network. Starter provides substantially more high-speed data and hotspot capacity depending on the selected network, while Premium is aimed at people who need uncapped high-speed data and includes international features. Verify the exact allowance for the network and phone you intend to use; the plan name by itself is not enough.

Choose US Mobile if: you are comfortable paying annually and want network choice, a low first-year equivalent, or international features that may justify paying more than the cheapest domestic plan.

Watch before buying: confirm device compatibility with the selected network, understand the high-speed and hotspot limits, and check the full renewal price. Network switching flexibility does not eliminate the need to test coverage at your actual locations.

Helium Mobile Air: a low-cost independent-network alternative

Helium Mobile Air costs $15 per month and includes 10GB of cellular data, unlimited calls and texts, and 5GB of hotspot data. The hotspot allowance is deducted from the 10GB cellular allowance, not added on top. Taxes and fees apply.

Helium also lists Infinity at $30 per month with unlimited data, calls, and texts. Infinity includes 36GB of high-speed data before speeds are reduced. That makes Infinity a possible alternative to other unlimited plans, but it is not the cheapest unlimited option in this comparison.

Do not use Helium’s former Zero plan as a current free-plan recommendation. Helium announced that Zero ended on June 11, 2026, and subscribers who did not act were transitioned to the $15 Air plan. Air is therefore best considered for readers specifically interested in Helium’s network model and who have confirmed local coverage—not as a default choice simply because of its low price.

Choose Helium Air if: 10GB is enough for your normal use, you want an inexpensive $15 option, and Helium’s service works reliably where you need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch before buying: account for taxes and fees, remember that hotspot data reduces the main allowance, and understand when data speed is reduced on any unlimited tier.

Cricket: best annual option for readers who prefer AT&T-network prepaid service

Cricket lists a 12-month unlimited plan at $25 per month when paid as $300 upfront for the year. The annual payment is the important part of the offer: you do not receive the $25 equivalent by paying one month at a time. Cricket also lists a three-month introductory unlimited offer at $15 per month, requiring $45 upfront.

Cricket includes 5G access at no additional charge when the phone is compatible. It also states that unlimited plans may be temporarily slowed when the network is busy. This is an option worth comparing for readers who specifically prefer AT&T-network prepaid service, especially if Cricket coverage is stronger in their area than the networks behind other candidates.

Which plan should you choose?

If you use less than roughly 2GB per month

Start with Tello’s $10 2GB plan. It is the most direct way to avoid paying for unlimited data you do not use. Check your phone’s cellular-data report for a typical month rather than relying on memory. Leave room for unusually heavy months, especially if you travel or use navigation away from Wi-Fi.

If you use around 5GB to 20GB per month

Compare Tello’s $15 10GB and $20 20GB plans, Mint’s 6GB, 17GB, and 23GB options, and Helium Air at $15. Tello is attractive if flexible monthly pricing matters. Mint may cost less during its initial term but requires upfront payment and has extra taxes and fees. Helium provides a flat 10GB allowance, but its 5GB hotspot allowance comes out of that total.

If you want unlimited service and pay monthly

Visible is the simplest all-in advertised choice at $25 per month. Tello’s $25 unlimited plan has a lower base price but adds taxes and includes 10GB of hotspot use, so it may not be cheaper at checkout. Compare Visible’s unlimited phone hotspot and 480p video limit with the data and hotspot rules of every alternative before choosing based on price alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are willing to pay for a year

Compare US Mobile’s $199 first-year Starter offer, $210 Flex plan, $299 Premium offer, Visible’s $275 annual basic plan, and Cricket’s $300 annual unlimited plan. US Mobile has the lowest first-year equivalent in the offers reviewed, but Flex’s 10GB high-speed and 5GB hotspot limits make it a poor fit for heavy users. Visible and Cricket both work out to $25 per month equivalent, while the right choice depends on network coverage, hotspot behavior, and whether the respective annual commitment is acceptable.

If hotspot use is your main concern

Visible’s basic plan stands out because it advertises unlimited phone hotspot use. Mint provides up to 20GB, Tello unlimited provides 10GB, US Mobile Flex provides 5GB, and Helium Air provides 5GB deducted from its 10GB cellular allowance. If you connect a computer regularly, read the hotspot allowance and any speed restrictions rather than looking only for the word unlimited.

If you travel internationally

Do not automatically choose the domestic plan with the lowest price. Compare US Mobile’s Premium and Starter annual plans, Visible+ tiers, and Mint’s international calling features separately. Confirm which international services are included, which cost extra, and whether the benefit applies to the country or type of use you need. The cheapest domestic unlimited plan may not be the cheapest plan for a trip.

Before you switch: a cheap-plan checklist

  1. Measure your usage. Review at least one normal month of cellular-data use and identify whether video, hotspot, updates, or travel causes occasional spikes.
  2. Check coverage at real locations. Use the carrier’s coverage checker for your home, workplace, commute, and frequent travel destinations. If possible, ask someone who uses that network in the same buildings—not merely the same city.
  3. Check the phone. Confirm that the device is unlocked and compatible with the carrier and, where applicable, the specific US Mobile network option. Compatibility includes the required cellular bands and may include eSIM or physical-SIM support.
  4. Price the entire first term. Add taxes, fees, surcharges, activation charges, and the full prepaid amount. A $15 monthly equivalent can mean $45, $199, or $300 due before service begins.
  5. Write down the post-promotion price. Record what Mint, Tello, US Mobile, or Cricket will charge after the introductory or first-year offer. Also check whether the plan auto-renews and at what price.
  6. Check eligibility. Some offers are for new lines and may require a qualifying activation or port-in. Read the offer conditions before assuming an existing customer can receive the advertised rate.
  7. Check data behavior. Look for high-speed allowances, congestion slowdowns, video resolution limits, and hotspot caps. These details often matter more than the word unlimited.
  8. Review annual-plan risk. Before paying for twelve months, read refund, cancellation, transfer, and renewal terms. A lower monthly equivalent is not a saving if you leave after a short trial and cannot recover the unused balance.
  9. Protect the number transfer. Keep the existing service active until the new activation and number transfer are complete. Have the account information or transfer credentials required by the current carrier ready.

Buying a new phone is not required: an unlocked, compatible device may be all you need to switch. If you do need a handset, an compatible unlocked smartphone can be a practical starting point, but verify its cellular bands, eSIM or physical-SIM support, and compatibility with the exact carrier and network option before purchase. Do not buy a phone merely because a plan is cheap; first determine whether your current device can be brought over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes that make a cheap plan expensive

  • Comparing $15 with $25 without adding taxes. The $15 plans from Mint, Tello, and Helium do not have the same tax treatment as Visible’s listed $25 price.
  • Calling annual arithmetic a monthly bill. $199 divided by twelve is a useful comparison, but it does not mean you can pay $16.60 for one month and leave.
  • Assuming unlimited means unlimited at full speed. US Mobile Flex, Helium Infinity, and Mint’s unlimited terms show why high-speed allowances and congestion rules must be read separately.
  • Ignoring hotspot limits. A phone may have unlimited on-device data while tethering is capped or draws down the main data balance.
  • Choosing by carrier name alone. Coverage varies by address, building, device, and network option. A low price cannot compensate for unusable service.
  • Forgetting the renewal date. Set a reminder before the first promotional or annual term ends and recheck the then-current price. Carrier rates and limited-time offers can change during 2026.

Prices to recheck before publication or purchase

Prepaid carriers change promotional terms, data allowances, annual prices, eligibility rules, and renewal rates frequently. Recheck the exact plan page and checkout screen immediately before activating service. In particular, verify Mint’s price after the first three months, Tello’s price after any introductory period, US Mobile’s renewal price and network-specific allowances, Helium’s current Air and Infinity terms, and Cricket’s annual-plan conditions. Confirm taxes and fees for your address rather than assuming the advertised monthly figure is your final total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a $15 phone plan really $15 per month?

Not always. Mint’s $15 offer covers the initial three-month term but requires $45 upfront and adds taxes and fees. Tello’s $15 and Helium Air’s $15 prices also have tax or surcharge considerations, and Tello pricing may be introductory for new lines. Check the full checkout total and the renewal price.

Does unlimited phone data mean unlimited high-speed data?

No. The plans use different rules. US Mobile Unlimited Flex includes 10GB of high-speed data, Helium Infinity includes 36GB before speeds are reduced, and Mint documents possible reduced speeds after 50GB in a month in certain congested circumstances. Hotspot limits can be lower still.

Can I keep my current phone when switching to a cheap plan?

Usually, if the phone is unlocked and compatible with the new carrier and network. Check the exact model’s bands, eSIM or physical-SIM support, and the carrier’s compatibility checker before starting the transfer. You do not need to buy a new phone simply because you are changing plans.

Are annual phone plans worth the upfront payment?

They can be, particularly if you are confident about coverage and expect to stay for the full term. Compare the total amount due, taxes, refund and cancellation rules, eligibility restrictions, and renewal price. The lower monthly equivalent does not remove the risk of paying for service you later stop using.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Tello’s $10 2GB plan for genuinely light data use, Visible’s $25 basic plan for straightforward month-to-month unlimited service and unlimited phone hotspot use, Mint for a carefully evaluated introductory deal, and US Mobile for the lowest annual-equivalent pricing or network choice. Helium Air and Cricket are worthwhile alternatives when their coverage model or network fits you better. Before paying, check coverage, device compatibility, taxes, hotspot rules, high-speed limits, eligibility, and the price after the promotion.
